Inspired by the cuisines of Puebla and Veracruz, El Rey captures the essence of Mexican home cooking. Boisterous and broken-in like a laidback roadside cantina, the dining room hums from midday to late-night. Food in Philly is amazing and this restaurant group has several incredible places. That’s why I gave the food at El Ray just three stars. The sauces are average/good. Same with the drinks. They could be amazing! I expect better of this group.

Incredibly unbelievably noisy. Very efficient, almost like a chain outfit. Food is decent, good flavors, but parts like the salad are quite rote. To add any kind of spice you have to buy their propriety salsa at 50 cents a pop.

The three dishes I received were in total salt bombs. They were overly salted to a stupefying degree. Find a taster who does not smoke or something. A complete turn-off.

I love el Rey I jus feel like, if they open at 4 the food should be ready. An hot when you get it. The first plate wasn't that good but the second plate was more flavorful an food was warm an fresh.

The restaurant was able to sit us an hour before our reservation since we finished up what we were doing in the city. The dining area was dark, but gave went well with the theme. Staff was attentive and we didn't have to wait to order drinks. Drinks and apps arrived quickly and entrees arrived very shortly after we finished our apps. Quality and quantity of food matched well with pricing. Food also reheated well the next day.

We tried El Rey because we couldn't find our desired reservation time at El Vez. El Rey was very enjoyable. It's a less energetic vibe, which was perfect for conversation. Food was on par with El Vez. I will be going back. The only small criticism was the frozen margarita was too frozen, otherwise it was a delicious meal.

Very Chill Vibe - every aspect from entering, being greeted & seated to excellent wait staff - extremely accommodating, friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. AND the Food & Drinks - Excellent - Top Notch - Overall Outstanding Experience. Definitely Be Back!!!

portions were on the smaller side, no complimentary chips, margs were fairly strong which was good. lighting is very dim so if you want that vibe it's perfect.

It's old school Mexican. Think heavy sauce and lots of cheese. Flour tortillas. If you like 1980's style Mexican food this is your place.

Fiona was a great server! Atmosphere is fun. Margaritas were delicious, but not that strong. The food has some kick and is very delicious. My only complaint was my table was a bit sticky when we sat down.

Food and service were excellent! Docked a star because of the margaritas - tasty, but both were 2/3 ice. The glasses are tiny to start with, but to have it then only 1/3 full with liquid felt like a total ripoff. We notice these things as patrons 🙂

The whole reason we went there was to go to the Ranstead Room following dinner. I made a special request for this when I made my reservation and told the reminded the server of this when we were seated. When the bill came, we were told that it would be 1 hour to 1 1/2 hour wait since they let people lined up outside in. After declining desert and considering a round of drinks while waiting, our server said the wait would now be 3 hours. Very disappointing!

Awesome place food was amazing. Only knock was there was too much food per dish so def should've shared our chiliquilles. So not a knock cause it was amazing there. Will def return!!!!!

Food and service were great. Reservations were accepted and seats were ready when we arrived. The only downside for me was that it was loud from the other guests. Would definitely return but at a less busy time.

From the time you walk through the door, the decor just screams authentic. The service is impeccable and the margaritas are 5 ⭐️!! I had the Steak tacos on there homemade corn tortillas. Absolutely out of this world delicious!!

I live part of the year in Colonia Roma in Mexico. So I am always apprehensive eating Mexican in the U.S. I am very familiar with the region of Puebla and Vera Cruz having made the journey to the gulf many times passing through Xico, Perote and Orizaba. I felt transported by my experience at El Rey, All that was missing was the humidity. Sopa de Tortilla, nailed it the broth was perfect and the Chicarrones a nice touch. The Chili Relleno was exquisite as well as the rice n beans. Not a bad margharita both of them! I will be back

our waiter was not attentive to me and my friends but was to all the other tables around us. He never once greeted us with his name. His attitude towards us was horrible and he took forever to accommodate our table. The food was mediocre also the drinks were not strong. I won’t be back again. the waitress ruined it for us.

Recently had an experience where I walked in for the wait list… told it would be about 1 hour wait (fine, perfect amount of time to get a drink elsewhere). They called back to say the table was ready in 15 min, so we asked to come back a little later given their 1 hour wait time estimate. They said they would take us off the waitlist claimed they “had a cancellation” to fill. Best part is when we called asking for a res and asked what time the cancellation was for they said the information was “private” so they couldn’t tell us. Lmfao you can’t tell us what time a res cancelled and when you need us there to take the table??? Clearly the B-list of Starr restaurants and the wait staff is F-list. Another disappointing trend we’ve noticed with Starr restaurants is using reservation/wait time to force you to get a drink at the bar before you get seated. Overall such a downgrade within the last couple years.
