Great Greek institution, rustic surroundings, choice of 3 very different dining rooms, beautiful part of the city, same owners all this time. Effie will say hello to you if you don’t say something first. I remember when Effie’s parents started her namesake restaurant. The whole family was wonderful and Effie carries on the tradition.

Everything about Effie's was great! Effie is an amazing Chef and person. She takes the time out to stop by tables and talk to her guests to see how we are doing and if we are enjoying her dishes. The homemade Baklava was supppperrrr yummy , as was the Spanikopita. Loved the mussels with Feta too and the fried cheese and zucchini slices. The food was delish all around . Took a friend there for her first time. It's a BYOB. We loved the atmosphere in the garden in the back yard. The server was very attentive too. I definitely will be back there again with family and friends. Would recommend this place to everyone.

Our meal was pretty disastrous. They were either terribly understaffed or incompetent. It took more than 30 minutes to get menus, even longer for water and wine glasses (we’d brought our own wine), and finally our food orders. After the endless wait, the food was really ordinary. You can get better kebabs and humus at dozens of places in Philly. Our server was very friendly but didn’t acknowledge the extreme delay or offer to reduce any of our tab, as a more professional restaurant would have. We were upstairs, where it was nice and quiet - had our food come promptly and been higher quality, it would have been a fun experience. (Note that the walls need to be painted up there, though, and that the stairs are steep and narrow and this unsuitable for some customers.)

We hadn't been to Effie's in probably 20 years. They are celebrating their 27th year and when I walked by this week I saw a sign for a 3 course Anniversary special for $25 pp. They are a BYOB so that is a bonus. The deal gave you soup or a small Greek Salad plus one of 3 entrees. three vegetarian plus gyro platter or boneless chick with garlic and red peppers. Plus a small slice of Baklava for dessert. Only good Monday - Tuesday and Wednesday . It was pretty busy. The food was very good and portions good too. I'm glad I saw the sign as I walked past BTW most entrees - including the ones we got - are normally $22. so this was good value

Food and service were excellent! I ordered the mousaka and my husband ordered braised lamb. They were both delicious, soft and very tasty. Baklava was delicious, not too sweet. We will come here again!

We went on a Monday evening during the Flower Show. Because of the crowds at the Flower Show and the fact that many restaurants were not open on Monday, it was exceedingly crowded. So, we ended up having our seating outside (beginning of March) with a promise that once we ordered our main course we could be moved. Only one waiter for all of the tables, but he did a pretty good job all things considered. This explains the loss of one star. The food was absolutely outstanding. The Spanakopita was the best we ever had. Pita with humus, olives and Tzatziki were outstanding. All of the apps were top notched! Don't forget it is a bring your own.

The service was slow and forgetful; friendly but disorganized. The tzatziki was just yogurt - no cucumber, oil, or garlic. The entrees were overcooked with meager portions that were masked with massive portions of rice. The hummus was good and the pita was perfect. Overall, highly disappointing. We won’t be back.

What does one feel when they hear "Greek"? Here are a few terms that come to mind: comfort, culture, history, deliciousness, warmth, sweet, family, fun, friendship! There are many more words that describe Greek culture and these are the terms that Effie incorporated into her restaurant: delicious food, warm and friendly atmosphere, right in the center of historical and culturally-diverse Philadelphia center city. It was an enjoyable meal in a quiet and friendly restaurant where each dish brings memories of sunny and gorgeous Greece! Come and see for yourself! Thank you Effie!

Food is always great at Effie’s but the outdoor room they’ve enclosed for diners is way too cold for winter and too hot for summer. Very uncomfortable last night because it was cold, heaters don’t keep room warm enough and opening door constantly for the wait staff keeps cold air moving into the small room. Overall, the physical facility is not good - interior needs a good cleaning but food is very good. Getting food also tends to ake a very long time so if you have plans, like a show, after dinner give yourself 2 hours between your reservation and start time. Our reservation was at 6:00 and we did not get entrees until 7:15 and only after I asked about them since we had a 7:30 show to see. We’ve dined n the main building of Effie’s and that is way more comfortable this time of year.

Ate in the upstairs dining room - a little more spacious. Very attentive server. Had Hummus Trio with nice pita bread. Chicken Souvlaki and Moussaka - both excellent. Baklava for dessert. Reasonable prices and BYOB. What else could you want?

The food was sooooo delicious, I was full and I just wanted to keep eating!! Cute and cozy ambiance! And our waitress, Grace, was very friendly and provided top notch service! Highly recommend Effie’s!! I will be going back soon!

The food was good. The service was horrendous. Not only was the waitress awful, she charged me 3 times for the meal. Fortunately, the manager (or owner), four days later, after I called him, informed me they would void the charge. This would be 3.5 - 4 stars if not for the service.

Went for the 27th anniversary of Effie’s restaurant. You got 3 course for $25. Started with Greek Salad, they also gave me a cup of the chicken soup, Effie’s chicken and dessert. It was outstanding.

We have eaten at Effie’s many many times over decades and the food is always excellent and the value is terrific. Last night there was another large group that over-stayed its welcome and clearly created logistical issues which the staff courteously tried to manage. The obnoxious group had no concept of how their behavior was impacting others. We really felt sympathy for their situation.

We went to Effie's because a friend recommended it. The food was indeed good and the staff was pleasant. However we had a weird experience. The food took FOREVER to come and when the first dish finally arrived it was something we had not ordered. When the mains eventually showed up, one was barely lukewarm even though the kitchen had had over 45 minutes to warm it up. Finally the bill included $5 overcharges on two of the three dishes, which we would have paid if we had not looked carefully at the bill (which we looked at because we wanted to make sure we were not charged for the dish we had not ordered).

They were closed despite us making a reservation with Open Table! This is the third and final time I believe what Yelp says about open hours. It IS a cozy restaurant with good Greek food, but the unreliability is simply not okay. So we did more upscale Estia one night and simpler Kanella the other - both recommended :-) I have tried calling Effie's to personally confirm that they are honestly open, but they do not pick up. If you walk by and see it is open, do try it, we have had great experiences once we managed to be there!

The portion sizes at the restaurant were disappointingly small and fell short of expectations. Additionally, the quality of the food did not meet satisfactory standards. Furthermore, the condition of the second-floor ceiling was subpar, displaying noticeable patches. All these factors combined have led me to the decision that I will never go there again.

It was New Year’s Eve the busy day of the year. And other places charge double that day so we have our usual menu . I would like to know what portion was to small so I van fix this but I have been in the restaurant business for26 years and we are known for large portions!,,!

This was the first time in a long time I was very disappointed. My chicken was under cooked and had to ask them to take it off the bill. The service was horrible didn’t have anyone check on us the entire meal. Only to take our food honestly the whole meal should have been free that was my worst experience that I have ever had there ate there about 10 times before. Pro not coming back

Ambience is mostly in the charming rear garden. Food is delicious and good value. Very pleased that Effie has added delicious vegetarian option of stuffed peppers with a light chunky tomato sauce.

food was excellent. effie and her staff are lovely. this is a neighborhood gem that is run on a lean staff so don’t go expecting the service of (what i would expect but have never been to) at cheesecake factory speed. i love this place!

We sat in the back room which was pretty cute. They have lots of tables shoved in there for the size of the room so once it gets full it gets noisy. Service was slowish. Food was okay, meatballs were super undercooked but took forever to come out so we didn’t send them back. Lamb was delicious- peas and rice over cooked. Very reasonably priced for amount of food!

Great fun and atmosphere. Affable and friendly Effie cooked up a super meal. Spanakopita and appetizer medley awesome. Really enjoyed shrimp entree. Moussaka outstanding. An all around great neighborhood spot for Greek food and a fun birthday.

My girlfriend and I sat out in the garden area which was very cute. It was a beautiful night and the server was very good. The appetizers were delicious but my girlfriend’s meal was bland. I enjoyed mine and we certainly would try them again. It is also a BYOB which is one of the reasons we liked them.
