Founded in 2013 by Davin and Jessica Waite, Wrench & Rodent is a space for culinary exploration and collaboration. This cozy, eclectic restaurant quickly became a destination for those who appreciated Chef Davin’s creative approach to celebrating local and responsibly sourced fish and produce.

In addition to a set sushi menu, Wrench offers an omakase as well as a list of specials that change daily. The team is committed to reducing waste and enhancing flavor by elevating all cuts of fish and veggies, as well as featuring a diverse range of species. Many menu items are simple, fresh and creative, with a lesser-known fish species complimented by ingredients from the backyard garden. Byproduct utilization drives the menu as well, and recent explorations with aging techniques have led to a dry aged fish program. Plant-forward preparations are also celebrated, and a vegan omakase is available upon request.

Un pub n'est pas un lieu évident pour déguster des sushis, mais le couple de cuisiniers Jessica et Davin Waite en font un exemple passionné. Leur établissement punk-rock d'Oceanside est très attaché à une philosophie zéro déchet et presque toutes les parties du poisson sont utilisées dans leurs rouleaux, y compris le Green Lantern, une version à l'avocat et au crabe garnie de saumon et de chimichurri à la roquette.

I have never had tartufo on yellowtail before in a sushi roll, and it was divine. They come with really creative approaches to sushi!

Didn’t find the seafood to be that good - we expected it to be more flavorful and it was all very bland. Not a full bar, which was a surprise. Service was lovely once seated but we wouldn’t go back.

Food was great. Rolls were fresh. Waitress was awesome. Front greeter was a bit slow. No greeting when we first got there. Not even a simple ‘welcome I’ll be right with you’. That basic/simple step goes a long way as far as starting the dinner experience on the right foot.

This was really disappointing in almost every category. The service was... aloof. We advised that we had never been there and asked questions about the menu, but the server didn't offer any recommendations or descriptions. I asked what was in the seasonal chef's choice roll, and the answer was a flat "I don't know." Yikes. We ordered the truffle/parmesan snap peas, yellowtail nigiri, a hedgehog roll, and deadites roll. The nigiri was the best of these, not very attractive but fresh and high-quality. The snap peas were okay, but very oily. The deadites roll was disappointing because the tofu was soft, not crispy, and the avocado was warm and overripe, so the roll was just mushy and not well flavored. The hedgehog roll was the worst, with so much truffle and garlic that it was impossible to taste anything else. In this case the truffle was too much of a good thing, and the garlic was raw and very overpowering. We were excited to try this place, but it was a bad experience and we would not recommend.

Was excited to try this place but was bummed. Food was ok- Nigiri was pleasant but the roll we tried did not taste or smell fresh. Back patio full of extra propane tanks and restaurant supplies that took away from the ambiance of what is supposed to be a nicer restaurant. Our waiter seemed disinterested both in his greeting and when we were ordering, resulting in incorrect quantities of food and forgotten requests. Though it was still early in the night, we felt rushed which we heard other tables discussing as well. Overall, a few good items on the menu but not worth the price. At least not when we were there. Maybe just an off night.

We went $80 omakase, severely disappointed. The two sushi (nigiri) courses were bad. Fish was poorly cut, unflavorful, and thin. The rice was the worst part— tasted like it was stale and seemed like it was prepared by someone on their first day on the job. The two hot dishes were good, a full fried fish and a tasty soba noodle with clams and broth dish. Sake was delightful. Good service. We were looking forward to a good sushi experience— perhaps we should have stuck to the a la carte hot dishes.

This place exceeded our expectations! My wife and I are big sushi lovers and though this wasn’t your typical Japanese sushi restaurant, we were impressed by the unique twist that was put into our dishes while still fulfilling our desire for seafood. Would highly recommend to any sushi lover and we will definitely go there again.

They have lost their imagination. What was once an experience in surprising sushi offerings has turned into an expensive and not very exciting thing. Food’s still good and fresh, but kinda meh as far as differentiated from other sushi options. Also very disappointing that sushi bar seating has been discontinued; that was the best part of the original concept.

The food is over the top delicious. This place and chefs really have spent time on the flavors and presentation. Other sushi restaurants need to step up their game. The service is another positive for this place. If you want to go, which you should, get a reservation!

Great food, but our server didn’t explain much. When you get omakase you want to learn more about the fish and why things were done, where it was sourced, etc. we didn’t get much aside from what it was and sauce on it, and sometimes wasn’t even known. She brought the machine as we finished the last course, without asking about dessert or anything. Brought machine and waited tableside for us to pay, very odd

As always, delicious food and creative cocktails. We were celebrating two birthdays (two days apart) and comped us two desserts as well! Our server was great and it was all around a fun evening.
