The Cumberland Bar serves Scottish food, real ale, classic wine and spirits in Edinburgh’s New Town. It takes about 15 minutes to reach its location at 1-3 Cumberland Street on foot from Waverley Station. Edinburgh Castle is about a 10 minute drive away from its premises and Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre can be reached within a 10 minute walk. The restaurant uses fresh and organically sourced ingredients to prepare its food including several traditional Scottish recipes are served with a modern flair. Thoughtfully chosen sumptuous dishes find their way on to the specials menu. Sunday is celebrated with a classic roast menu which is updated every week. The pub is famous for serving real ale, local and imported beer and wine.

Staff tried to remove us from our booked table before we even ate because they were short of space. Half of the cask beers were unavailable. Many items on the menu were unavailable. Would never recommend this place.

Popped in on the off chance of getting something to eat and got a table for two. Great beer on barman's recommendation. Food was the usual pub food but great quality. We always visit Edinburgh in late April so will definitely be going back to this great pub next year

Hosted a regular meetup for 15 folks (booked via OpenTable). As ever, fast and friendly service. Plenty of space and relatively quiet during the day, but I do recommend booking if more than 4 folks. Many of us ate too, and it has reasonable pub food for the price. It’s also pet friendly: one of our guests brought their cat!

The Cumberland is ok for a bar meal. Menu greatly reduced, prices a bit higher. Election of beer no longer what it was.

We had a lovely meal here, the food was excellent and the staff were friendly and attentive. We would definitely recommend, and will be back.

Lunch was very poor. Many items on menu not available on the day. No tea or caffeine free coffee either. The place was so cold we all kept our insulated jackets on. Probably the reason there were almost no other customers. Service was almost non existent with no explanation of whether to order at table or at bar etc. and took a long time to eventually get order taken. The food in the main was ok. Lots of room for improvement.

Booked for NYE before going to the Street Party - absolutely incredible pub, and a bonus that the Sunday roast still being available during dinner service. After travelling for 2 months, it was so good to have a great meal at a really decent price!

A group us enjoyed an afternoon in the Cumberland Bar for a few drinks and a meal recently. The choice and quality of the beer was, as always, spot on. The food was excellent bar fare that everyone was happy with. The bar and waiting staff were friendly and helpful throughout the day. Would recommend for anyone looking for an unpretentious bar meal and a few beers in a great traditional bar

Good sunday lunch, really pleasant atmosphere, good beer selection. A wider range of veg and some actual roast potatoes rather than chunky chips would have been prefereable ....Id definitely return though

We visited early on a Saturday afternoon when the bar was relatively quiet, which is ideal for me. Enjoyed friendly staff, good food and ambience. Don't forget to leave room for the Sticky Toffee Pudding. My guest, an Ale fan, thoroughly enjoyed being offered a 'taster' before committing to beer unfamiliar to him. Most enjoyable.

The food was not good, the burger was like an old boot, definitely not freshly cooked, and when we told them no compensation offered. The chips were like soggy oven chips. We won’t be eating there again unfortunately as it is our local and we like it there. The food in our experience is not consistent. It’s a fine place to go for a drink, but I think it depends on which chef they’ve got for the food, so pot luck. We’d recommend for drinks etc but but for food.

Visited summer of 2019, 7 month before Covid hit the fan. We stopped in every day blown away by how good the food was!! Chef would make up a platter for you: Scottish egg, thin juicy fried chicken tenders, tiny olives, crayfish, etc. Just amazing! Steaks, beef and Ale pie. Out of this world good food especially for a pub. We have referred so many friends to the Cumberland once things opened back up. Now I know why the return response was so under enthused after we came Back in June of 2023. We chose our Airbnb within walking distance fully expecting to visit the pub every day. Shockingly disappointed. A completely different pub vibe (we were tempted to check the ID’s of the staff if they were old enough to serve there) Menu so limited and food was just plain and honestly bad. How a pub can go down hill in such a short time? We should have known walking up everyone was outside with pints but not one person eating food. Not one. We looked again when leaving and every outside table was full but not one table had ordered food. Drinks only. What a waste for the locals, what a waste for the owners.

Beautifully kept pub in the New Town. The staff are exceptional; welcoming, friendly and polite. We loved the delicious Sunday roast. Also a great selection of locally brewed ales. A highlight of our weekend.

A bit disappointed in my Sunday lunch. Food not particularly hot and only 1 slice of roast beef. I then asked if I could swap ice cream for cream or custard and they had neither. My friend then ordered a cup of tea only to be told they had no tea! Won’t be rushing back!

Great neighborhood pub. Really good gluten free burger for my husband. So hard to find places that understand celiac. They even have gluten free beer. Ben, our waiter, did because he had it as well. So polite and helpful. Give it a try !

There was a group of 8 of us that booked here for some midweek dinner and drinks. A really nice, no frills place. Everyone really enjoyed their meal and all would be back again!
