Exceptional food and ambiance. But expect a small portion, it is not those standard American explode-your-belly portion. Ingredients are really fresh and full of taste, chef seems to know how to use herbs from all across the globe. Wondering why they do not get Michelin-1 star, food is that good.

We love the fried red snapper. Were thinking about it all week and then we find out that it is fried alongside shrimp which we do not have. Please make sure that they do not use the same oil.

My fiancé and I both have a restaurant industry background from earlier in life. We truly appreciate good restaurant experiences. Sadly, where we live in Colorado, they are hard to come by. Tar & Roses was our special night out during a weekend getaway to Santa Monica. We could not have picked a better restaurant. Yes, the food is amazing. Creative, complex, beyond delicious, and beautifully presented. And the ambiance is terrific - intimate, cozy, romantic. But what set this dining experience among the best we've ever had was the service. Our waiter Martin, was perfect. He was there when we needed him, and gave us space when we didn't. His recommendations were outstanding - helping us find the perfect pairings of food and wine. He was warm, friendly, fun, engaging, and always smiling. Carly the GM was so attentive as well. She has done a marvelous job with their wine list, and the Nebbiolo blend we settled on was wonderful. She also recommended an incredible dessert wine that elevated our dessert. Often I find dessert wines to be too syrupy, but this one was light and just sweet enough. Carly even texted me the next day to thank us for joining them - that was a first for me. Even the hostess and bussers were fantastic. They were friendly and so attentive - we never had to use a fork for more than one course or worry about a crumb being left on the table. It was, without a doubt, one of the most wonderfully memorable dining experiences we've had. And it was the perfect way to cap off the day I finally gave my fiancé her ring. And the next time we come to SoCal, I can't imagine the trip without another meal at Tar & Roses.

Flew out to Santa Monica for a date and wanted to impress… Research led me to tar and roses. The research was right and my date and I loved it! From the moment we walked in warm, smiles and gracious house met us and had no problem, changing our table to something a little more romantic, the server was pleasant and offered his recommendations which we appreciated. The food? Oh man… The food was amazing! The roasted hummus was out of this world. The snap peas were Poppin. I was not a fan of the warm salad as it was too pungent For my taste. The fish was perfect, and our dessert was the best I have ever had… I mean, that, literally, the best I've ever had!

Everything was superb! Definitely recommend the lamb (shank and from the snacks), chicken liver mousse, dumplings, cauliflower, and strawberry ricotta dessert!

This place ranks among the best dinners I've had in the city. Excellent food service and execution. It's a foodie's restaurant and served in a very approachable style and value. Our party of six was all very satisfied. Great fusion of tastes and attention to detail - too many to list - but the quality is easy to see and taste. Every dish we had was worth it, pictures only hint at what you're getting. We loved it and definitely adding it to our list of go-to's in the area!

Outstanding small plate restaurant with a great ambiance and friendly, attentive service. Lots of delicious vegetable options! We were three women celebrating a friend's birthday. Started with yellowtail crudo & gnocchi with asparagus & morels and a delicious lemon sauce. We shared a main (duck breast with cherries, greens, and polenta). The best duck I've had outside Paris. Also had snap peas w mint & a tamarind yoghurt, and roasted sunchokes. Finished with the strawberry tart & honeycomb ice cream. One of the best meals overall that I have had in years. Thank you for a splendid birthday celebration!

The food was amazing. The concept is sharing of various sized portions is perfect. The mushroom lettuce caps and the octopus skewers were delicious. Shared the whole red snapper which was perfectly cooked. Would highly recommend.

Stop trying to decide where to eat and make a reservation here. Our dinner was outstanding. We ordered ten different things and most of them were the kind of good that made us stop talking and moan with pleasure. The few that didn’t, were simply very good. The only problem is that we live on the east coast and don’t know when we’ll be back. Thank you, Tar and Roses for a divinely delicious dinner. We will miss you.

Everything from the food, to the service, to the ambiance was fantastic! The staff all look you directly in the eye when they're speaking to you, noticeably passing full attention, that was definitely soothing we noticed that was different. When asking for recommendations, they provided in-depth explanations of the layers of flavors which was appreciated. Each dish was very well balanced, sweet, savory, bases and acids, etc. Really lovely meal all the way through. The yellowtail crudo was particularly delicious, as was the Hanger steak which was incredibly tender and paired with some kind of ridiculously tasty mushroom.

Tar and roses is one of my favorite restaurants and I go there often. My favorite dishes are the ribs and octopus skewers which are always delicious. I also love ending the meal with the strawberry ricotta tart which is fabulous and I hope it stays on the menu forever!
