Very minimalistic but a nice restaurant. The St John’s wine and lager were brilliant. We had a 1.15 booking and were disappointed that quite a few things had already sold out. Starters were great but very heavy on the bread/ toast which filled us up for mains. We really enjoyed the food. Desserts were also fab!

Good service and atmosphere in the restaurant. Main course v slow to arrive and we had to send one dish back…but they took it off the bill and gave us some free madeleines so all good.

I think this restaurant is overhyped. The food is not really anything special and I’ve had better offal dishes elsewhere. The calves liver was slightly worse than my local pub’s. The prices are typically (London) high and the venue is quite spartan. They had a supposedly award winning Negroni cocktail that all our table commented was very reminiscent of coke! The service was good, but I would not go back.

We left our reservation just a bit disappointed. I had helped open a restaurant in NYC that very much said St. John was a huge inspiration for them, so was very excited to come and see the place itself. Very cool multi-functional space, and the food was very good, I was just a bit sad about the service. There was a young man who opened our bottle of ok champagne we brought with us and I tried to tell him that we had carried it around so to be careful when opening, it might still be a bit jostled and he didn't really listen, he just insisted the bottle was cold (which wasn't the point) and then opened it and it overflowed onto my side of the table as he attempted to pour. After that our server came by and took our order. When I asked for an ice bucket again after he didn't bring one for ten minutes he kind of rolled his eyes and someone else brought one over. I think he thought he was being cheeky and charming during the night of serving us, but it just came off as dickish. We were celebrating my partner's birthday, so while we weren't looking for much extra, we were just looking for someone to at touch the table more so we could order more drinks, (I mostly just wanted to try the St John's version of a negroni) but our server after taking our order disappeared until we were ready for desserts in which he cracked another rude joke about takeaway that I think he just kind of thought was funny, but just kind of rubbed me the wrong way. It was clearly a very busy Saturday night service, so I totally get it. He was clearly very busy and stressed. But when we got our desserts a different server with glasses came by just to check on us, and it was like a breath of fresh air, he was so gentle and kind. This place is still legendary, I would absolutely recommend people to go, I was just a bit sad at the experience.

Not been there for a while but it has not lost its special ambience and intriguing menu. Thankfully the renovation looks like only a lick of paint and improved kitchen facilities - all the tables are in the same place. I love all things offal- well most things - so menu choices are agonising. Salt cod for starter, rarely seen on UK menus, and devilled kidneys on toast for main. House wines are delicious and frankly, I could eat there everyday. Thank you for being St John when the restaurant world seems full of small, cramped tables, small plates to share (as if!) and too much noise.

My boyfriend and I are loyal St John visitors. It was lovely to be back in the Smithfield one as it had been closed for a while. We were lucky enough to grab a table when they temporarily relocated to Fortnum's and had a gorgeous late lunch. one cold Sunday. This time round I veered away from my usual brains and marrow choices and went for the kohlrabi starter and the grey mullet main - an off-menu special - with leeks & tartare sauce. Absolutely delicious. We were impressed by the simple deliciousness of the turnips & anchovy sauce. My two Manhattans were spot on. My boyfriend's lamb broth had a homely, cosy depth to it but was still light and fresh. He had the Middle White and we agreed that the broccoli with shallots and dijon-y sauce was superb. Side of jersey royals. Pudding was a dark sugar tart for him (definitely another highlight) and a bread & butter pudding with custard for me - never a disappointment. Coffee, and some madeleines that our waitress popped in a St John bag to take home with us. It was under £90 a head - ridiculously good value, despite the absence of wine. I would have rated our visit 4.5/5 with a slight reduction due to the lamb broth being very very hot, a wish for a bigger dollop of tartare sauce with my mullet, and a bit of a wait on food. But more time for us to observe the atmosphere that makes us go back again and again.

The best experience. I was expecting big thing and my expectations were met. The place itself is aesthetically very pleasing, the service is fantastic and the food is some of the best I’ve ever had. Very impressed.
