Fantastic meal and warm friendly service from Domenico. The Bacalao on toasted polenta was amazing. Purple potato gnocchi was excellent, branzino entrée perfectly prepared. An authentic taste of Piedmontese cuisine, cute sidewalk café, well curated wine selection. You could spend more money uptown yet never attain the superb dining experience offered at San Carlo. Reservations recommended.

Starting with the positives...the staff is very pleasant and the space is nice. The menu has some unique dishes that are generally not seen in the US. One such example is the Vitello Tonnato...cold, thinly sliced lean veal with a a tuna aioli. It stood up to any I've had in Italy. The wine list is superb and you don't have to spend a fortune for a good wine. There is also a large list of amari and grappa. The negatives...the tables are ridiculously close to each other, so on a Saturday night, privacy was only made possible by the incredibly high noise level...it was hard to hear my companion, let alone the people next to me. Service was a bit uneven...though we ordered pasta as a middle course, that seemed to create a lot of confusion and it initially came with one of the main courses. The main course was sent back, but that isn't a great scenario...not sure if it was just kept warm. Also, the pasta was the only course that was disappointing...the texture of the pasta wasn't great and that dish was a surprising low-point.

We had an incredible meal with exceptional service that was friendly and knowledgeable. I was happy to be seated outside as it was quieter and we had a great backdrop of the Freedom Tower. We will definitely go back!

The food was delicious and authentic no doubt. However, our Hispanic server kept offering the “cheapest” things on the menu because we were Hispanic and it made us feel uncomfortable. We were there for dinner not for a cheap plate….

Wait staff were very nice, but the whole experience was too rushed to be enjoyable. They asked for our full order (drinks and food) about 5 minutes after we were seated at the table, and then we received bread and oil, then the appetizer, then the entrées in quick succession. Drinks came out just before the entrées did, which felt late. All-in, we were in and out in 45 minutes, 10-15 of which were spent waiting for the check or in line for the restroom. The meal was so rushed that you would have thought we were half an hour late for our reservation, or maybe the restaurant was about to close, but we were on time and people were still being seated when we left. This would have been mostly ok, had the food not been only all right. The suppli’ were pretty good, but the plin was either missing the lime zest or had so little you couldn’t tell, and the octopus in the paccheri was tough. Both pastas could have used some salt.

Hands down, this is one of the best authentic Italian restaurants in NYC. Each dish, from the anatra scaloppata (pan-seared duck breast) to the quiche ricotta e spinaci (quiche with ricotta and spinach), down to a simple cup of espresso, was delivered with perfection. I was particularly impressed by their tiramisu, a common dessert easily found across NYC; their tiramisu was sheer perfection. The service was outstanding too. Mirko and our server, Samuele, went above and beyond, providing on-point recommendations for both wine and dishes, along with an insightful overview of the restaurant's background. This truly enhanced our enjoyment of the dining experience. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for authentic Italian cuisine at its finest.
