Minimalists and speed-eaters, avert your eyes. Rhubarb has arrived in all its opulent, theatrical, lingering glory. Set in twenty acres of gorgeous parkland yet a short drive from the Royal Mile, Rhubarb and its hotel home, Prestonfield, are the creation of James Thomson. Black-kilted porters escort you to Rhubarb's two oval Regency dining rooms decorated in baroque splendour, with giant chandeliers, silk wall coverings, and ancestral portraits. The menu, created by chef John McMahon, uses classic techniques and modern inspiration to transform ingredients into sublime grub. Popular dishes include the Gewurztraminer poached foie gras, the breast of Loue chicken on tarragon risotto, and the assiette of rhubarb desserts. There are more than five hundred wines to choose from, and more than one hundred malts.

What a treasure this place is. The opulence of the place is breathtaking. If you can start your evening with a cocktail upstairs. There are open fireplaces in the colder seasons and it couldn’t be any cosier. The food is great, the wine list impressive. I can recommend the chateaubriand

What an elegant and interesting location! Food was excellent. I had the tomato appetizer and it was absolutely delicious. The main Bass dish was very good. My friends had the shake and really enjoyed it. After dinner we wandered around all the rooms. The place is amazingly decorated.

Rhubarb Restaurant is a fantastic splurge. The rooms, the food, and the service are all incredible. I got the 3 course dinner. Each course was delicious, as was the wine. The service was attentive and friendly. I enjoyed peeking into the various other rooms after dinner. In addition to being excellent, having dinner here is quite unforgettable because all the rooms are just so beautifully decorated.

Rhubarb is our go-to stopping point when visiting the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Set in the gorgeous Prestonfield House, even before you get to the beautifully decorated dining room, you are wandering around the beautifully landscaped gardens. Once inside, there is an a la carte menu of deliciousness, and during the Edinburgh Fringe, they have a three-course table d'hote menu, which never disappoints in terms of choice, value or quality. There are few restaurants we would return to time and time again, but Rhubarb is one we certainly will. Check out the hotel's website for some exciting events coming up very soon and stay for a stunning meal.

Sumptuous surroundings. Sumptuous food. We had the haunch of red deer in pastry was superb and worth the waiting 45 minutes for preparation. Our server was so solicitous and precise. A celebratory dinner on any occasion.

An amazing evening with great cocktails and innovative and tasty food. The venison pithivier sharer was superb. Perfect for celebrating a special occasion.

We found the food very good and the staff were attentive, but discreet. The experience was really enjoyable and we were able to relax in the quiet room. We will definitely return.

Absolutely gorgeous restaurant with incredible staff and wonderful food. My husband and I came whilst on our honeymoon and the staff went out of their way to make our night special. Would recommend to anyone looking for a romantic evening and spectacular food and ambience.

Our second time at Prestonfield in recent years didn't let us down: quite a few guests, and good ambience for people watching. Service was attentive but slightly clumsy. The food was beautifully presented, from smoked salmon to watercress veloute, nicely seasoned apart from potatoes which our party found slightly overseasoned. Portions were modest and left plenty of room for dessert and petit fours. Wine selection might have been great but because there is no option other than a QR code, we simply chose from the house options.

The restaurant is gorgeous and the food was very tasty. The sommelier was of great help. But I’m sad to say the service was average, definitely didn’t reflect ‘special occasion’ dining, or fine dining. Our server was very friendly but constantly made errors with mixing up tables, giving us salt & pepper in mini pouches like in a fish and chip place, bringing us the wrong bill, not providing appropriate cutlery (spoons), and never describing the food when it was brought to us, which left us guessing particularly with cheeses. I was expecting top experienced service but got friendly pub staff service. I don’t want to sound like a snob but if your heart is on an exceptional experience, you can’t help but feel let down when do many things go ‘wrong’.

Opentable booking for a birthday meal, but they seemed to have lost the booking 🤷🏻‍♀️ Service was not the best, but the servers are polite and courteous, but time taken to order, and be served items was was not as timely as expected (for fine dining?) Food was good, nice presentation. Drinks are great (cocktails too). QR code menu doesn’t seem to work on android phones very well though. Scenic view, peacocks in the garden. Resident cat comes to say hello ☺️ I’m not so sure dress code is strictly smart for dining since there were casually dressed others..

Beautiful grounds, right next to Arthur’s Seat so had the wow factor before we sat down! Our servers were really lovely and very attentive. The food was amazing and very good value, but I gave a 4/5 because although the Hake was perfectly cooked, the risotto that came with wasn’t as fantastic. Will definitely be back next time we are in Edinburgh!

Amazing dining space, worth visiting only for being able to see the house. Food is also excellent although bigger portions would be better, leaves you craving for some more. Staff is amazingly helpful and professional. Highly recommend it

As ever the food is always very tasty at Rhubarb. Although pricey the latest 'subsidy' makes it even more enjoyable for a fifer. Seriously though we find the Rhubarb always meets and often exceeds our expectations. The beef wellington was sublime!1 Many thanks. Fred Anstis

Service was so poor.Also had put a note on the booking and spoke to manager prior to sunday to arrange for something special for our anniversary but they completely forgot or did not bother to do as promised. Was very disappointed.

Giving myself and 2 granddaughters a special treat, we were cordially welcomed, shown to a lovely window table and excellently served throughout the meal. Every course was a delight, the steaks particularly juicy, and the treat was well worth the money.

Absolutely gorgeous restaurant with impeccable service and lovely surroundings. Highly recommend for anyone who is looking for a night of luxury. From entranceway to dinner to a drink in the ornate public rooms, I loved every minute. Go!

Starters: my Smoked Salmon was "OK" but my wife's Chicken Veloute did not taste very nice. Main courses: her Beef en Croute was good but the rice in my Risotto had a rather "nutty" consistency (i.e. it was a little undercooked). Puddings: both had Creme Brulee and they were good.
