Enjoy the perfect mix of elegance and comfort at the original Nippon, New York's oldest authentic Japanese restaurant -- now in its 59th year!

Since 1963, we have been offering the best of traditional edo-mae (Tokyo) style Japanese dishes from Sukiyaki and Tempura to Sushi and multi-course Kaiseki.

A restaurant of firsts, Nippon was the first Japanese restaurant to serve Sushi in NYC, and made global headlines when founder successfully petitioned the FDA to allow fugu-blowfish to be imported to the U.S. Nippon is also the birthplace of the Beef Negimayaki and many other dishes that are now standard fare in Japanese restaurants around the world. In addition, Nippon makes its own premium quality ni-hachi soba-noodles and presses its own tofu.

We made an 8:45pm reservation. We did not realize they close at 9:15pm. We arrived for dinner and were asked to order within 7 minutes of arriving. We asked to order another set of sushi at 9pm and we're told that was all we could order. When the server told the sushi chefs they threw their tools down on the counter and were visibly angry that we ordered additional food. The staff hovered over us grabbing our plates as quickly as possible. We requested the bill and the server said that they add gratuity to the bill which seemed odd. The experience was poor and we ordered, ate, paid our bill and were leaving the restaurant by 9:20pm. The restaurant has a lot if tension and provides service as if they were a cheap chain restaurant. There was one employee who worked there who was kind to us - a woman with lightly tinted lavender hair. I love sushi and am a bit of a sushi fanatic. In colorado we eat at Sushi Den which is far superior in fish quality and service. We also dined at Nobu during this trip and I would say the food and service were both considerably better at Nobu. Poor dining experience, received poor customer service and would not return.

Four of us ordered Makunouchi Bento for lunch. It was disappointing. Very small amount of sashimi and their chicken karate was cold and hard. For most of the part, rice and vegetable. Four of us are Japan-born Japanese and know Japanese cuisine. It is very sad they raised the price considerably but fail to maintain quality. Oh, we also ordered Anmitsu as a desert. One of the worst anmitsu we ever had. It seems they mixed the canned anmitsu and some mudiocre tasting cubed fruits.?another disappointment.

We came here from out of state to celebrate a birthday because my husband first came to this restaurant 50 years ago with his grandmother. It was an amazing experience! Nippon is as authentic as Ive been for Japanese cuisine in the US, and the ambience is wonderful. There are the mat rooms, or the regular seating at wooden tables. The restaurant is comfortable and stylish in a traditional way. The food was very flavorful and cooked to perfection. We had delicious sukiyaki and a vegetarian prix fixe menu which included several different courses. This way we enjoyed a favorite dish while getting to try a variety of different dishes and a dessert. Our server explained each course as it was served and was very helpful with suggestions when selecting saki. I cannot wait for another chance to return here! What a gem!

What a HUGE disappointment - totally missed the mark on delivering on their promises - after taking our reservation and allowing our ordering the kaiseki set menus for two which should be the perfect dinner, tranquilly served, allowing for each beautiful dish to be savored and enjoyed this was absolutely NOT the case - Instead it was kaisekichaos, and the dishes were literally rushed out to the table while we were still eating the prior one, left getting cold sitting at the table and then piled up one after the other (plus sake tastings 2-3 deep) so that by the end of the meal they were stacked 3-4 dishes deep - 100% SHAMEFUL SERVICE AND FAILED MANAGEMENT TEAM and all due to apparently the chef wanting to leave TO GO HOME early - Reataurant Nippon whose the client here ??? Your valued loyal customer or the leaving early chef - NEVER again should this happen and certainly NEVER are we coming back without sincere management making the much needed apologies !

Went for the Fugu: it was great. I’d heard this is the only place in the USA you can get fugu legally, so it was a cool bucket list item o got to cross off. This isn’t specific to Nippon, but fugu is a little drier than most probably expect and it doesn’t have much of a taste, but it was good! We got to sit at a table Michael Jackson sat at once, very memorable experience!
