Excellent ambiance, superb food / choice. Transported us back to Japan in spirit. Favourite restaurant in Edinburgh.

Very small portion and the price is too high for the amount of food you get!! Felt very hungry even after ordering 3 dishes each. Very disappointing as it was for my daughter’s birthday. If the chef increased the food portion, especially wagyu don then it would be better! Wagyu don was £26 but the bowl size was so tiny!!

Excellently presented food. Very fresh fish. Some choices not widely available at other Japanese restaurants, such as Chawanmushi. Additional salad, vegetable and rice side dish choices would be welcome. Excellent Sake selection too. Highly recommend.

The service is good, especially the manner of staffs. The quality of food is generally at high level, but still has some rooms for improvement, such as some sands were inside the arkshell clam.

We have eaten sushi all over the world including in Japan. Outside of Japan this is the best sushi we have ever had. Amazing staff and great service. Can’t wait to come visit Edinburgh again just to come here.

The ambience was very chilled and helped me to feel relaxed. I was made to feel welcome from the minute I arrived in the restaurant. I loved the decor and the staff were very friendly and attentive. Definitely recommending this place and returning for food.

High expectations, food was good, but we were away from the main dining area, it felt removed and lacking in atmosphere. The service was ok, as was everything but I wanted better attentive service and for me I think I needed to be able to feel the atmosphere, see the chef prepare, have the huddle of the diners. Give it a go, it’s worth a try. For me it was just not quite good enough.

Food is very tasty and the staffs are all helpful and nice. Lunch set is a nice deal. Would definitely recommend others to visit.

This was a perfect place for a first night dinner. The fish was so yummy and fresh. The service staff were very kind and happy to answer questions about the dishes. I would recommend for smaller parties becasuse the restaurant is on the smaller side.

We read the reviews and booked with fingers crossed! We were not disappointed. Snow crab, prawn tempura, seared tuna, sashimi, gyozas, edamame, Sake and the best crispy spicy tuna rolls we have ever had! The quality of the fish was excellent and taste buds were taken to another level! Great service and good value. We hope to return soon.

we had to wait for our reservation 20 min more, the food and drinks were good, but wagyu nigiri tasted a bit of BBQ and was hard to find a flavour in the meat. the overall experience is good and the prices are good.

Looking for a good Japanese meal in Edinburgh, we chose Yamato by searching the internet, and making a judgment from the restaurant's website. We weren't disappointed. We enjoyed an absolutely superb meal - fabulous sushimi, tasty and crispy tempura, the volcano of snow crab was exquisite, the teppan teriyaki salmon incredible, but the absolute star of the meal was the wagyu beef roll. A must have!!! Service quick and polite, with advice given for those new to Japanese food. Highly recommended. We will definitely be back.

Hidden away near Tollcross is an excellent Japanese restaurant. Although busy, the service was super with food arriving surprisingly quickly. Food great quality and especially liked the nigiri and soft-shell crab roll. Super selection of sake.

La nourriture est délicieuse : sashimi, nigiri et maki sont aussi bons que tout ce que j'ai pu manger au Japon, et les plats cuisinés sont encore meilleurs..... Une bonne ambiance, calme et feutrée.

I love Yamato and is normally my favourite sushi place in Edinburgh. But Valentine’s Day I think there was too many bookings and maybe not enough chefs on…Food took a while to come and wasn’t up to the normal standard and quantity of sushi I’d normally have received from Yamato

Valentines night so very busy. Staff were run off their feet in fairness but we were ignored for a while and waited an 30mins to get a drink/water. Tables were cramped together and had to ask for the bill 3 times. Food is amazing though and when I’ve been before service is much better!

The service was extremely slow. We waited a while for menus to be given to us then waited a while between each dish. We were there nearly 2.5 hours, and not out of choice. The food was good, it was just a shame it took so long. The waitresses were lovely, but seemed like they were under staffed.

absolutly amazing, teh second time to visit this restaurant, evrything from the service to the food is incredible , this has to be one of the best suschi restaurants in the country, no wonder it was so busy, if you have not been before you need to book it now.
