Ula is a beautiful European Mediterranean restaurant and tapas bar in San Francisco. Sip your martini or quality wine with a seafood-centric menu that has a focus on raw, roasted, and grilled fish and various roasted and grilled meats, pasta, gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan selections. The restaurant is maximalist art deco with fixtures that depict jellyfish, oysters, and grand maritime vessels. I lucked out with finding this place. They were very accommodating with great service. It has a nice ambiance and nice decor to look at. The food is absolutely exceptional!

Service and kitchen here leave much to be desired. The restaurant wasn't very busy (now I know why). The server forgot to bring one dish and apologized. There was an inordinate amount of time for the food to arrive, about 40 minutes. I have to say the food was quite good. After finishing, the used plates were never cleared, even once I flagged down a person to get the check and paid it, still the dirty plates on the table. This was a rather unpleasant dining experience, recognized by the manager who comped us 50% appropriately. They automatically charge 20% server tip which was not deserved. I don't think there are going to be any Michelin stars in this one's front window.

A place we try to visit each time we come to SF. It wasn’t as wonderful as it was in the past (menu changes; no live music; etc) but still a goodie!

WE came here because we used to go Farralon (the restaurant previously in the space). The fixtures are all still there if you want to go to reminisce, including the cave-like ceilings and the marvelous jellyfish lights. We received excellent service, friendly and quick and the ambience was good, it sort of creates itself with the underwater interior theme. The food was oily/greasy. We left most of the dishes, we ordered Garlic Shrimp. Crab Cake, Tuna Tartar, Octopus Carpaccio. The restaurant needs a jolly good clean, especially high-level. Thick layers of dust on the lights. High expectations of the old days of Farralon were dashed, sadly. Hopefully this beautiful restaurant place gets better chefs and we can try again.

Ula is an absolute must go! We went on an abnormally quiet Monday, but it gave us an opportunity to chat with Neeraj, the owner. He gave us a tour of the restaurant, its old Hollywood glamor and fantastic. Ample seating with private spaces. Our bartender served us fantastic martini's and wine. We did a few tapas, Octopus and the garlic shrimp and share the BRANZINO. Its so was crisp and delicious, we will be back to try more.

This was the first time we sat in the front bar area. It’s beautiful. The food was delicious and the servers were wonderful. Bartender made great cocktails!

Exquisite and attentive service from everyone! the hostess, our waiter, Red, and all the ancillary staff. All the dishes came beautifully plated and lavishly seasoned. The beautiful nautical decor and glass jellyfish just added to the magic! A perfect prelude to our evening at SFJazz.

Great Food & Service. A lot of VG & GF choices. All dishes are delicious with great presentation. We got three different waiters during our short lunch visit; I am not sure why. Water is $12 + tax & tips per bottle which is pricy. I have to pay for a bottle of still water which we did not drink.

Food was great, as was the service. It was early on a slow night so noise level rating might not be accurate. This restaurant is located in the Kensington Hotel in the space formerly occupied and designed for Farallon. Much of the beautiful artistic glass and ironwork are still in place. Drinks are little on the skimpy side of the pour but the starters are all large and delicious. We did not have any mains. An assortment of starters were more than enough.

We selected this restaurant for my daughter’s birthday. She liked the ambiance. It appeared nothing has changed in the last 23 years since it was built. Still pretty but some aspects were dated. The food was quite good. We ordered many tapas—-all vey tasty. The lamb chops and seafood stew were excellent. Great service.

Ila, formally Farallon, is beautifully decorated with beautiful undersea decorations, but it is much more than a seafood restaurant. Delicious steaks and lamb chops, the best thin sliced octopus I've ever tasted, and perfect salmon were served gently and efficiently at our table. We felt pampered. Well come back with each visit to the SFPlayhouse and any other time we are in downtown!

Located in the previous Faralon Restaurant location on Post St. it still has the visual delight of "under the sea" with gorgeous Jelly Fish glass chandeliers, large scallop shells & starfish motif in the floors and "Kelp" shaped railings thru out. A variety of Tapas selections were excellent and waitstaff attentive. A great pre theatre dinner location for the Curran Theatre.

Bruce, our server, was outstanding. The tapas were good although the cheese board was uninspired.. BUT-- it is an inexcusable management failure that one of us could not have a featured specialty cocktail because the bar had run out of pisco. Wake up! Are there no liquor stores in SF where the bar manager could have obtained the keyingredient for what's supposed be a signature beverage?

We would not come back to Ula. The staff was great, beautiful place but the food was not good. We ordered several appetizers and did not think any of them were worth the price. Quality of food was poor.

We booked for Valentine’s Day for an event that promoted a live jazz band. We were sat in the back under a drop ceiling (with staining) and felt very forgotten. The food was fair (prix fixe), the service was decent. We ordered oysters (had a lot of sediment and shell), both croquettes (decent), one of each salad, a filet mingnon, and the salmon. No wine pairings for courses, just a list to choose (which is fine). Dessert was ok as they were out of our first choices. No dinner pairings/drinks offered. Felt like we were an afterthought most of the night as our food came late and we waited 20 minutes after dishes cleared to get the bill. If you come to an event with music, unless you’re at the front, don’t bother. The sound in the back was full of tinny speakers playing weird 60’s/90’s/00’s music that was all over the place and distracting (did not fit the venue). It was weird walking from the back to the bathrooms as the music/sound clashed. While the space is a cool piece of history. We remember when it was the Farallon, and were excited to see any updates to the space (not many/any of note). Ghere was little updated and our corner booth and lighting (lights flickered). Where we sat was dated and stained (looked like a ceiling in a bar that once allowed smoking and never replaced the drop ceiling tiles). We likely won’t be back as the cost of the night’s menu, even if you factored gratuity, was significantly more than if you ordered each of the most expensive items in each category.

A++ Food and Service. Came early on a Saturday and felt like we had the whole restaurant reserved to ourselves (filled up by the time we left). Try to get Bruce as your waiter-- he's the best at what he does and makes the whole experience fun and personal.

The gambas al ajillo was the best I've ever had. The sauce was more complex than the usual garlic and olive oil. Warmed Olives were fragrant from the orange peel in the dish. Okra was delicious, with a yellow pepper puree and sauteed/caramelized shallots. The burrata bruschetta was absolutely fantastic - we especially liked the combination of lightly roasted grape or cherry tomatoes with more intensely roasted or sundried tomatoes. Our waiter, Alex, was perfect. He deserved 5 stars or better. The assistant servers were not so good. We'd had a bottle of sparkling water and one of them poured still water on top of the last of my sparkling water before I could stop her. They also cleared the table, leaving my husband's dirty knife and didn't pick it up even after we moved it to the edge of the table.
