Tasting Menu

The tasting menu is what we do best, and what we're most excited to share with you! This is an individualistic, seasonally-driven experience celebrating Vancouver Island and paying homage to our Chinatown home. The menu is constantly evolving --dictated by the seasons, the farmers, and the whims of the culinary team. While most dietary restrictions can be accommodated, due to the intimate nature of our kitchen, we are unable to fulfill requests for sesame, soy, or finfish allergies. For all other dietary restrictions, we request 48-hours advance notice so that we can be better prepared to welcome you. Our tasting menu is 6-plus courses, priced at $105, and we encourage guests to set aside two-and-a-half to fully enjoy the experience.
Three-Course Menu

Our three-course prix fixe menu features a seasonal selection of 3-4 options per course, centered around the best that Coastal BC has to offer. This menu is $78 per person. We suggest allowing 2-2.5 hours to fully enjoy this experience. While most dietary restrictions can be accommodated, due to the intimate nature of our kitchen, we are unable to fulfill requests for sesame, soy, or finfish allergies. For all other dietary restrictions, we request 48-hours advance notice so that we can be better prepared to welcome you.

The customer service was the best I've ever had. The owner and cook came out to our table to ask how we found his food and even printed off recipes after we told him how much we loved it! I cannot recommend Ugly Duckling highly enough. If you only have time to eat out at one fine dining establishment in Victoria, make it this one.

Taking advantage of seasonal items, careful planning and execution, with a very thoughtful artistic presentation was our take away. Describing our meal, other than it was all that and more, would not be helpful as the menu changes quickly based on the availability of fresh ingredients. However in our experience, there are so many superlatives to describe the Tasting Menu, best to make a reservation to choose yours. Our group, visiting Victoria, is already making plans to return to enjoy another meal at this truly fine establishment.

It's a fantastic dining experience. The tasting menu is experimental but very delicious, and the pioneer combination of different ingredients is balanced very well. I am very pleased, will definitely come back for the regular menu!

Phenomenal. Incredibly helpful staff adjusted our reservation to allow us to make a show after. Tasting menu was sublime - taste, presentation, service. Just got my family member to make a reservation for birthday dinner.

Fantastic meal. Extremely creative dishes with unique parings that complimented each other perfectly. Left us wanting more of every dish. Halibut was the family favorite.

What an amazing meal! Will look forward to the tasting menu in the future when a new compilation occurs. Well worth the wine pairing as well given the quality. Highly recommend.

We have experienced a lot of tasting menus and Ugly Duckling is in our top 3. The food was outstanding (especially the sauces). It was creative, but not over-done or pretentious and perfect flavor/texture combinations. The wait staff were awesome...warm, friendly, but not too chatty. And the price for what you receive felt like a good value. We will be coming back every time we visit Victoria!

Fabulous! We had the 3-course menu and all of the options were amazing. The service was great and we even had the chef come describe the dishes upon recommendation. Highly recommend!

Amazing food, loved the location. Unfortunately our waitress seemed irritated by any request we made. We eat out a lot, it was surprising.

The food was tasty and very attractively presented. But perhaps because the elaborate plating took time in the kitchen, the first and second courses both arrived to the table lukewarm. As with most restaurants in Victoria, the noise level is fairly high, but still tolerable even with the restaurant full. The service was excellent.

Highly trained and friendly staff. A very lovely and memorable dining experience. Food was delicious and well portioned and paced. Staff very knowledgeable on food and beverage offerings. Loved it and will be back for sure.

The food was excellent some of the best we’ve had in Victoria. Only notes would be some dishes could have been a bit more balanced with some acidity/feshness (halibut dish) and at some points service was a bit slow. It took awhile for someone to come to our table at first and other dishes (duck) could have been warmer and (dessert) the ice cream was melted. I don’t want this to sound complainty because we really enjoyed the creativity, quality , and flavours of the food. Just some small notes. Thanks!!

We had a lovely dinner at Ugly Duckling. The staff was amazing and the food was delectable. We had the tasting menu which started with a delicious mushroom custard. We also tried the foie gras which was an extra $15. It was superb. The lamb tortellini was delightful and the butter poached halibut was so buttery and wonderful. The duck breast was very good. The dessert consisted of petits fours which were lacking sweetness and I guess I was expecting chocolate. These were little brown sugar cakes. They were good, but I like my desserts to be sweeter. This was a very expensive dinner, partly because we added one wine pairing, the foie gras and had the tasting menu. All in all, memorable and divine.

Dining at a Michelin level with a casual vibe The team at the Ugly Ducking is really cooking at all levels! The ambiance and design sense is very zen. The Asian theme follows over to the food : great techniques and flavour profiles and dishes with varied components on them that work very, very, well. Wine program simple but compliments food perfectly. Everyone quite charming. Can't wait to go back

I don’t write many reviews (it’s something I’m working on), but I just had to sing Ugly Duckling’s praises. We didn’t quite know what to expect, but we’re so pleasantly impressed. The tasting menu is so well thought out and it progressed like a well written story. Every detail and dish is so thoughtful and complex. This goes for the cocktails as well. They’re able to take good dimple ingredients and make them shine. The service was also amazing, attentive, but not overbearing. There was a good pacing and flow to the meal. All staff were knowledgeable and eager to answer any questions. It was very easy to see how much care was put into this dining experience and it was apparent at all levels. Ok, I’m gushing… thank you Ugly Ducking for a very memorable date night. It was easily one my favourite meals. Cheers!

Ordered the tasting menu. Timing was way too slow. Tiny portions with ages between courses. Food was good, but one course was super disappointing. Butter poached halibut that ended up like tasteless gritty overcooked fish. Of all the dishes, I think I saw two tiny bits of vegetables. $400 for 2 people, with a couple drinks each. Not worth it. If the food had been better, and timing better, I would consider it worth it. But this was just a bad effort.

I really like this place. It’s one of the best restaurants in Victoria. The prix fixe asian fusion menu had a surprising variety of well prepared and balanced fish, foie gras, pork, among other things. They had an amazing cocktail served in a chinese food takeout container (sorry, spoiler alert), and between the four of us we tried pretty much everything. We’ll be back.

The Ugly Duckling provided an excellent dining experience. The food was locally sourced, creative and delicious. The service was as you would expect from a fine dining experience. The menu is very limited however it provides an opportunity to try flavours you might otherwise not.

The dishes were innovative and beautifully prepared. The variety and sequencing of each course was perfect. Excellent wine pairings. Could not be happier. It was truly a magical experience.
