On Friday, June 7th, join James Beard Award-winning author and barman Toby Maloney as he welcomes Danny Childs, author of Slow Drinks (2024 James Beard Media Award Nominee - Beverage Book with Recipes) to The Violet Hour for "The Bartender’s Bookshelf," an evening dedicated to showcasing the talent of the JBF Media Awards. Together with The Violet Hour team, ethnobotanist Danny has crafted a specialty menu that pulls recipes and inspiration from Slow Drinks, his acclaimed guide to foraging and fermenting seasonal sodas, botanical cocktails, homemade wines, and more. Throughout the night, signed copies of Slow Drinks will be available for purchase on-site with the help of the local Chicago bookstore, The Book Cellar.

Took almost 20 min to be acknowledged after we sat. Other tables received water as soon as they sat down. Not us. This was our first time visiting and we were really let down by this experience.

Had an early reservation for 2 and when we walked in the place was pretty empty. They sat us right next to a loud group of 6 while the rest of the place was empty. We asked if we could move to any other table for 2, and they said those tables were all reserved. We finished our drink and left, with all the other tables still empty.

I’ve been wanting to try this James Beard Award-winning cocktail bar for quite some time now… so when I saw they take reservations now, I nearly RAN to book one. I had high expectations, but boy did this place exceed them! This is a must-try establishment in Wicker Park. Their menu is constantly rotating, the staff are well-informed and true cocktail enthusiasts who will make sure you have a great time here, and they’re located in the coolest spot (inside an artistic mural, which gives major speakeasy and pre-prohibition style vibes). They serve some food as well and even welcomed my party with complimentary champagne for a birthday we were celebrating. Check them out ASAP if you’re a cocktail fanatic like me! Hands down one of the best craft cocktail bars I’ve visited!

It was great! Brandon was so helpful and attentive! The drinks take a little bit longer but besides that was perfect! Definitely we will be back soon!
