The Highlander Hotel and Supper Club are back! Join us to experience our modern take on the 1967 Supper Club menu, with a grand brunch buffet every Sunday, a classic supper club steak and seafood menu every Friday and Saturday night, and a simple pool and pub menu Sunday through Thursday.

The Highlander Supper Club was built in 1967. The hotel, ballroom, and pool followed in 1974. For the next 30 years, both experienced extraordinary success playing host to celebrities like Micky Mantle, Joan Baez, and Arnold Palmer, arguably becoming one of the most popular entertainment, event, dining, and hotel destinations in Iowa history! The next 20 years were a time of slow decline and by 2019 the icon was in serious distress.
Now, The Highlander Hotel has been reinvented as a chic boutique urban resort, the only independent hotel in Iowa City, and the number one traveler-ranked hotel on Trip Advisor for two years running. The Supper Club shuttered for two decades but has new life!

When the Highlander opened in 1967, the most popular drink served was the Mai Tai, a Tiki craze-inspired blend of aged rum, curacao, orgeat, and lime juice. The Tiki culture was inspired by the sentimental appeal of an idealized South Pacific as viewed through the experiences of tourists and Hollywood movies, incorporating beautiful scenery, forbidden love, and the potential for danger.

We were excited to go to the Highlander as we use to love to go there. Last night the food was awful other than the bread and butter. we had a party of 4 and and 3 had steaks and 1 being the prime rib was just terrible. It was a dark grey in color and very hard to chew. The vegetables were not cooked enough. W will not eat there ever again. Your dining room is a Joke!!!! We were seated at a card table and the chairs were quite unsteady. Your hostess is very dry and did not speak to us when we came in or left. The music was loud until our waiter shut the door. Our waiter did a great job and was very attentive. Good luck in the future!!!! you are going to need it

I'm really sorry you weren't happy. It's so weird how tables, same night, same menu can be over the moon and one can be incredibly unhappy. We're moving the music and dancing to the Highlander's ballroom so that noise won't be an issue moving forward! We have new chairs in that dining room now - solid wood! We look forward to surprising and delighting you in the future should you allow us another shot. Thank you!!

Brunch… very inconsistent. Main issue was that many of the food items were cold and breakfast potatoes and waffles were of particularly poor quality. The desert table had limited selection, but perhaps expectations were too high.

Thank you for trying the brunch during those first few weeks of the new brunch. Recent reviews are all stars! Starting up a new service has it's bumps but I believe we can increase your 2 stars to 5 with a return visit!

Staff was excellent but they seat you in what feels like a conference room with covers on wood chairs, no ambiance and not in the retro bar area. Prime rib over cooked and over seasoned. They need to open the seating to a front area or something with a view. It is indescribably quiet in the dining area. It's just a wired vibe and space. Went there for a graduation dinner and it was a C- and that's being kind. Staff was excellent but they need to either seat folks in the retro bar area or take a front area or something near the pool and patio and make that the dining area. It was the oddest dining experience in a long time

Our new chairs have finally arrived and now that our new dining room is complete you will have a choice of dining in the lively family oriented arcade or an upscale dining room adjacent to the outdoor patio with view of the fire! I really appreciate you taking the time to review. Reviews in our first few nights of dining are really helpful in getting a roadmap forward. Looking forward to your comments at a future visit! We arrived early, and my wife got us a table without needing to check in our reservation. The lobby looked very promising walking in. It’s all for show. If you’re expecting IRP I’m just going to let you know they aren’t here. This restaurant pales in comparison to them. Not only am I disappointed, but I feel misled!! It is not what was advertised. It is not worth the money.

The brunch food was delicious and there was a nice variety of choices. The room though has low lighting and blank walls. Art work would be nice.

I really appreciate your feedback in these first few weeks of figuring out our new brunch! I have artwork in every corner of the hotel but not the ballroom. I thought our massive crystal chandeliers would take main stage and you would not notice the lack of art. As we have weddings in there I thought brides in some cases would want very vanilla so that they could do their own thing. I will ponder this. I think you are so right - feels too much like a wedding at brunch. Stay tuned, wheels are already turning. Great review - 5 stars food 5 stars service and constructive criticism on the ambiance! Thank you. :)

We expected a fine dining supper club experience and got at best a low level cheap bar atmosphere with limited menu but New York priced drinks.

Sounds like you visited on a weekday those first few weeks of our new restaurant before we had the supper club menu 7 nights a week. We do now and look forward to another chance to surprise and delight you with upscale dining. I wish I knew what drinks you had so I could review their price! We don't want to be NY priced. Iowa City right in the middle of the midwest is where we want and need to be. Thank you for your feedback. Please give us another whirl.

We went for the music because we knew the players, but I was surprised by how good the steak, baked potato and grilled vegetables were. I don't mean surprised because I didn't expect them to be good. I mean surprised because I thought they were REALLY good, as did my husband. Our server was lovely, but I'm rating service as "fair," because there wasn't enough of her (restaurant seemed understaffed) and it was only her fifth day, so when we asked her what she recommended, she couldn't recommend anything (refreshingly honest, I guess). I however, can recommend the ribeye.

We were expecting a brunch buffet but they ran out of food. We had a plated dinner instead but it was still disappointing.

I remember! We made the mistake of allowing brunch reservations into the afternoon and evening and yours was one of 6 that ended up plated as the brunch didn't work for such a long time frame. I'm really sorry that first week of our new restaurant and new brunch were bumpy. Please come back soon, I think you will be delighted. And giant thanks for 5 STARS on ambiance!
