Casual, coastal restaurant in Bloomington. Reservations are taken for the dining room only, patio seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please check in with hosts upon arrival for patio seating.

Although named for the boats used to catch lobster, Smack Shack was launched as a food truck in 2010 serving lobster rolls from a land-locked downtown Minneapolis parking lot. Owner Josh Thoma had a great recipe and a belief that the appetite for fresh lobster in the Twin Cities was as strong as in any coastal city.

Smack Shack is committed to serving sustainable seafood and is a partner in the Minnesota Zoo’s Fish Smart program. Sustainable seafood is wild-caught or farm-raised seafood that has established practices to ensure the long-term growth and thriving populations of seafood with limited harm to the environment.

We were seated outside at our request. Unfortunately the staff didn't mention the road construction noise, which made the experience less enjoyable than it might have been. The lobster rolls were excellent. This is their specialty. Lobster bisque was good, but had an unusual color and taste. Almost like a cheese sauce instead of the creamy bisque that I expected. It had nice chunks of lobster, but I would probably not order it again. Maybe I will try the Chowda next time. Service was very good, food was delivered promptly and politely.

Service was slow. It was mentioned on reservation that we had a birthday, also was asked at table if we were celebrating, and yes, it’s his birthday. Never acknowledged. Service was incredibly slow even though we had an appetizer to share, it was an extremely long time in between getting our appetizer and dinner. Would not recommend that location at all!

Smack Shack never fails to impress. We had company in town and knew that this was the place to take them. From lobster rolls to lobster bisque! And fried green tomatoes to start the meal to sharing beignets for a bite of something sweet for dessert! Our company loved every bite.

We had the Sesame Ahi Tuna and Lorraine's Lump Crab Cakes. Both were good. Server was a little slow. At times we didn't see her for almost 15 minutes when we were sitting with empty drinks. We eventually flagged down someone else that just happened to be walking by. Be aware of the "Health Service Fee" (or whatever they called it) on the bill. It was almost another 5% of the total bill.
