The Royal is operated by James Hickson, who has a solid hospitality background having learned his trade at well-loved restaurants and gastropubs including St John, Great Queen Street, The Canton Arms and Moro. James is hands-on at the pub, overseeing the relaxed yet lively atmosphere, friendly service and sophisticated food and drink. The kitchen is led by head chef, Andrew Taylor-Gray, who has previously worked at Petersham Nurseries, Hix and The Canton Arms.

The Royal has been included in the Michelin Guide since February 2020 with Bib Gourmand status, which we have maintained ever since.

A welcoming gastropub for locals and visitors alike in St. Leonards-On-Sea and Hastings, low-key and down-to-earth, The Royal occupies an historic corner site right opposite St. Leonards Warrior Square station.

    We booked here because we were staying round the corner, I had read a few reviews as they are all so varied went with an open mind . We were greeted warmly by a friendly girl who re-set our table whilst we had a glass of wine at the bar. Once seated we chose from the limited (lalways a good sign) menu. We had delicious starters, mains and desserts accompanied by very well priced wine and a cocktail each. Our server was great, very informative about our food and wine, he also recommended other places to try whilst we were in the area . We would definitely return here if we come down to this area in future. We had a lovely evening

    The food at the Royal was excellent, I would particularly recommend the Pistou Soup, my wife was very keen on the baked custard. Price was good value and we will definitely go there again .

    I had the pasta dish which was tasty but miserly portion. No fries included with one of the fish dishes or potatoes with the lamb. Pricing top end and 20% service charge which was made it expensive for what you got. Public bar very dodgy, eating area OK but nothing special.

    The food was delicious! The reason I gave 4 stars for food was because two of my friends thought the garlic soup wasn’t great. Otherwise, everything was delicious and the service was impeccable and friendly. I just love this restaurant.

    Fantastic customer service there, really helpful waiter and waitress they clearly enjoy being there. Nice jovial chap and being with my young family it’s always appreciated having great service and interactions with helpful and nice staff.
