The Raymond 1886 never disappoints. The food and service are always top notch. I ordered the chilaquiles, which was good but I would have liked a bit more spice. The drinks on the other hand were exceptional, ordered the espresso martini with tequila (Siete Reposado) and it was AMAZING! Kudos to me server (Carlos) in particular, and the bartender(s).

Delightful experience! Amazing service and food. I had the scallops and they were absolutely delicious. We were welcomed by our gracious host and escorted to the beautiful patio. This restaurant has such a history. Make sure to ask your server about it. It was originally part of the Raymond hotel- a Southern California luxury resort of the 1800s. The staff at the Raymond is 1st class, making sure our celebration was magical. Our family had a great time. We will be back soon!

We have not been to this restaurant in many years. Like everywhere else, the prices have increased tremendously. The food is still good but the service was awful in every way. I got my cocktail but my husband waited about 10 more minutes to get his beer. Our server took orders first from others around us that had arrived after we did. Our entrees came about 5 minutes after the appetizers and the two-top table was so small that everything would not fit on the table. We would have rather enjoyed our cold appetizers first before getting our hot entrees. I asked for a water refill several times. No one checked to see if we were doing okay. I had to ask to have the empty plates removed from our very crowded table. I had to ask for the dessert menu as well as the check. It wasn't just our server, it was the entire staff was very inattentive. For the price we paid, I expect much better service.

The atmosphere was both festive and romantic. I really wanted to love it. But the food was just so mediocre at best. The Caesar salad tasted like it had been drenched in a bottled dressing, and for some reason they put marinated artichoke hearts in it. It was not terrible though, maybe a 6.5/10. The problem was I found the foil-lined paper lid (from a dressing bottle) in my mouth with some lettuce. Yuck!!! My steak which was offered to be cooked at medium rare was WAY overcooked, like past medium. It also had a sauce made with what tasted like canned mushrooms. We had put in the reservation notes that it was a special occasion, and came in with kids and adults wearing dresses and ties. Nobody mentioned our celebration, or inquired about it. Nobody asked if we wanted dessert after the meal. To be fair we did want to go, but in my experience when there’s a special occasion and/or a mishap with food, offering free desserts is a typical good will gesture. Anyway we were a party of 6, and the total bill was roughly $450… so $75 a person for 3 kids and 3 adults. One adult ate only a starter, one ate only an entree. One kid got buttered noodles and fries. Two people had a basic glass of wine. The server did randomly offer to comp one of the people having a second glass which was nice and certainly not necessary. But I guess I just felt disappointed by the food/service. Even though everyone was very nice, I think the issue is they lack “fine dining” instincts and know how. To charge $30-50 per entree, I think there should be significantly better quality control in the kitchen and significantly more refined service. If our bill was fully or partially comped, I’d be singing their praises and going back giving them many more chances. But after this experience I sadly can’t return to the Raymond. If the prices were cut by 50% or more I’d not have such high expectations. As it stands they have some major issues to work through.

Hello, and thank you so much for your detailed review. My name is Gina and I am the GM of the Raymond. I am sorry for my staff not recognizing your special day. I think from what I can gather that is was a graduation? We love celebrations here and find that many families have enjoyed them over the decades here at the Raymond. I am sorry that your was not acknowledged. Moving forward I will have all servers approach tables and ask "are we celebrating something tonight?" That way we are sure not to miss an opportunity. I would like to assure you that the dressing is made fresh in house. I will be speaking with my chef today and find out where the foil could possibly be from. I so appreciate your sharing all of this with us. I am open to speaking more if you want to share anything further.
