The waiter, Ernest, was what made the dinner. We have had him before. He’s the best.

The menu options were great although they were out of 2 if the dishes we wanted to order. We were greeted and seated immediately. Our server, Dale was FANTASTIC! She was very attentive without it being too much. She explained her favorites and recommendations. The best dish was the shrimp la plancha appetizer. It was DELICIOUS. We also had the cheese and pesto appetizer and it just didn't do it for us. We all ordered oysters which came with house made cocktail and hot sauces. They were both good but that hit sauce had a big kick. The oysters themselves were just ok, good but nothing tobwrite home about. The entrees we ordered were the lobster roll and the Mahi Mahi. Both hit the spot! Sides we got we the hushpuppies, sweet potato, broccolini, and the smoked fish rice. All of the sides were good but the hushpuppies and the rice were enough to go back for alone!

Unforgettable experience makers: EJ, CJ, and Becca thank you for elevating my wife and I’s 7yr anniversary dinner. Becca who took great care of us, asked all the right questions to help curate a night to remember. The oysters were (chefs kiss) The whole crew at The Optimist took care of us from the moment we walked in until we walked out. For that we are forever thankful! Without a shadow of a doubt we shall return!

Food was very flavorful, along with the drinks. Service was wonderful also and prompt. Only complaint is the portion size especially on the beets were super small.

We will definitely go back to this place. We ordered the shareable platter to start, and that was a hit at our table. We each also got our own entree, and each of us found the fish delightful. Our server, Gabriel, treated us right. Another server walked our 80 year old mother to the bathroom as a courtesy. My only knock is the volume, which was loud. It was hard to have a conversation with people across the table. That won’t keep us away, though.

As usual, great seafood dishes all around and awesome oysters. But like all Nashville restaurants it is expensive.

Seated in a back bar table despite a quiet night. Martinis made dirty, instead of neat. Apology only, was received from the waitstaff, with no offer to return and replace properly. Mixed shellfish sampler starter was excellent. Entrees were very small, yet tasty. Inexpensive bottle of wine ordered. Yet tab for 3 people approached $400. Value just was not there. Decent vibe, nice location, semi-friendly staff, and had a nice time. But at a 5 star price range, it was simply not a first class dining experience.

One of our favorite spots for dinner - their team brought out oysters that they didn’t have last time to make sure we could try them. They were a) phenomenal b) so thoughtful.

Food was good, but nothing out of this world especially for the price. We had some good oysters to start, but for the price, they didn’t match up. Soups were terrible, no one enjoyed. The shrimp appetizer was great! Scallops were great as well. Our server must of been having a bad day, kind of ruined the experience. We left the dinner feeling uncomfortable with her and her attitude. She wasn’t very friendly to her fellow service staff either. You’ll have a good meal, but we won’t be running back, unfortunately.

I came for my girlfriend's birthday. The food was amazing, but there were issues with service (waiter dedicated most of their time providing service to the table next to us).

Service was a little slow at first but overall good. We were disappointed that it was my birthday and we ordered 2 desserts. It would have been a nice gesture to comp one based on how much we spent. Overall good food and seafood option in Nashville.

We received a gift card for $100 for The Optimist and decided to try it. We asked for a booth upon arrival and were sat at a half booth and one table chair. Additionally, we had tables located directly beside us, 2’ away with the same set up. It’s like eating on a cruise ship where you’re sat beside strangers. Our server was prompt, friendly, and helpful. After ordering she brought us 2 rolls, one for each of us. We commented on how great the bread was but never were offered any more. My wife ordered the shirt steak and hush puppies because she’s not big on fish or seafood. There are no other cuts of meat available. I ordered the lobster roll and fries. It took approximately 40 minutes for our food to arrive. Both our portions were very small. She had 5 hush puppies and I got a small order of fries. Her steak was tough and not flavorful. My roll was good, but small. We both drank water, had the entrees, and she had 1 side. Our total bill with 20% tip was $157.00. In our opinion, completely not worth it.

We don't have standard booths where people sit across from each other, but we do have side by side booths. My wife and I have been to this restaurant 8-10 times and it was always above average....so good enough. This time the service was slow. 1 hour just to get drinks! Every oyster I had had grit in it. Perhaps parts of the shell. The main course was fish and it was room temperature. Some of it was even colder than room temperature. I’m not sure how a cook manages that. Perhaps it was frozen and cooking it did not heat it up properly. Frozen seafood, yea. I think there are new owners. Also, the staff was over worked. That’s poor management. Going forward I’ll just let the free market take care of it. Eg. I won’t be going back. Lots of other places in town.

The service could’ve been better, overall long waits inbetween the server coming and going from the table when the place wasn’t packed. We ordered one of the seafood platters and shrimp/lobster wasn’t deveined, and had to ask multiple times when we needed lemons or water refills. Ambiance is great just feel you can get better seafood elsewhere.

I have been to the Optimist many times and wanted to bring my family while they were in town visiting. The service was so bad that my family did not understand why I liked this place. It was very disappointing.

The Optimist is our favorite restaurant to go to for special occasions and again, it did not disappoint. We were brought two glasses of complimentary champagne to celebrate which was so appreciated and enjoyed. The food was fantastic as always, Brain was our server and he was incredible. Very personable, attentive, knowledgeable, and sweet. We had ice cream and sorbet for dessert and it was magnificent. Lovely place for dates or special occasions and we will continue to come back!

Food was excellent, especially the flounder. Reasonable wine list, price wise. Maybe edging a little bit too deep into hipster territory, but these are the times, I guess.

Birthday celebration of four. I had high expectations for this place because of the previous reviews but we were let down. When we walked in we were kindly treated by the host and I was in awe with the atmosphere. Such a cute concept. We were greeted by our waiter (Ernest I think) . He then proceeded to take our drink order. 2 cocktails of the cocktails that were ordered did not taste like there was even alcohol in them. The bread was a surprise and was so delicious! We asked our waiter for some recommendations and he basically went over the whole menu which didn’t help too much but he did mention the mahi mahi was topped with a bunch of crab so 3 of us at the table knew we wanted that. When it arrived we were so disappointed. We literally had 3 thin pieces of crab laying on top of the mahi mahi. We were also told the sides were shareable so we could order some and do a family style. We all picked one from the menu and when they came 3 out of 4 could really only be shared with 2 people. Not big sides. I will say the fried rice was a hefty portion. In the middle of our meal we had to flag down our waiter to get another round of drinks due to him not checking on us. When it was time for the check I was surprised there was no birthday dessert for the birthday girl. The tables bill was totaled at $500 and none of us left satisfied with our experience. I really wanted to like this place but it was not worth the money.

Exceptional service and food! This place is an experience seafood lovers owe to themselves. The famous rolls and Shrimp a la Pancha kicked off our night. For our main course we had the schnitzel and swordfish. We ended the evening with three of the desserts. My husband fell in love with the pineapple upside down cake and I the coconut pie. We both gushed over the Prosecco sorbet. The cocktails left a lot to be desired but it could have just been an off night, no biggie. In the past we’ve had the scallops and mahi which were equally delicious. Our server Brian was very passionate about his position of providing top notch service which made the evening even more delightful.

We’ve been to The Optimist two times before this and keep returning because it’s an excellent spot, but last night was truly the best food and service we could have asked for. We visited for my birthday with two friends, and we were greeted with a signed birthday post-card from the staff and a birthday stamped menu, which was a fun personalized touch. Our waiter, EJ, was super personable, knowledgeable, and went above and beyond to make it a special meal. He’s honestly the best waiter we’ve had around Nashville, so we were lucky to have him! Every dish we ordered was perfect, from the Spanish Octopus to the Cobia Tartare, to the scallops, swordfish, mahi, and schnitzel entrees we shared, to the Smoked Fish Fried Rice and hush puppies. The drinks were amazing too. Couldn’t have asked for a better night at The Optimist! We highly recommend!

We had an impeccable meal here. Beautiful space with a nice bar. Our server was kind, attentive and gave great descriptions of the food. The complementary bread rolls were the best I've ever eaten in my life. The gulf shrimp is a dish that I will remember forever. I've never tasted such moist and flaky swordfish. Every dish we were served would have been a standout at any other restaurant. My only complaint/observation is that the dishes are quite heavy. I felt like my body was composed of 50% butter after the meal, so don't be fooled by the modest portions, you won't go home hungry.

Our server was so attentive and made sure we had the best experience. The corn milk hush puppies, gulf shrimp a la plancha, and the halibut were my favorite dishes. And the complimentary buttery rolls… OMG!! I’ll be back.
