The mussel and steak bar has been a firm favourite for over 17 years with worldwide visitors and Scots alike since we opened in 2005. We have been granted the most popular seafood and steakhouse by various organizations. Our restaurant has been awarded a member of the Scotch Beef Club because we have inspected and satisfied the criteria regarding the quality, provenance, handling and preparation of the scotch beef that is served.

Just right Great seafood, oysters, mussels, sea bass with couscous with a touch of curry! Excellent wine selection by the glass Down home environment, quieter then we have been in days in Edinburgh Best of all great, attentive and friendly staff. Located in the heart of vibrant street traffic

Voor tweede maal gegeten, binnen twee jaar bij het restaurant. In een woord een top restaurant, niet groot maar juist groot genoeg. Ons advies wel van tevoren reserveren!

What a lovely little place! Cozy and comfy, the staff were attentive and friendly. Seafood was so tasty and the steak was prepared perfectly.

We were in Edinburgh 4 days and this was the best meal we had. Perfect Ribeye, outstanding oysters, and mussels. Great location. Book a table upstairs for a more upscale feel or downstairs for the more oyster bar vibe.

That was our 2nd visit. We suggest signage on the door to close door well as we got a blast of cold air constantly. Food was delish and we were seated earlier than our reservation!!! Yeah!

The restaurant space is a bit narrow. As for the food, they specialize in seafood. Once seated, they offer complimentary fresh oysters to each guest, ensuring that everyone gets to enjoy this delectable treat.Definitely worth a try!

Amazing food with amazing service can’t go wrong. Even if you don’t like seafood there are options for everyone. I had the seafood linguini 10/10!!!

I clearly had too hi an expectation for this meal but it was clearly the wrong time to visit. Easter Monday Night and staff must have been burnt out. That said they were polite and actually the reason we didn’t just walk out. Tables hadn’t been cleared, place was hot and smelled like a fish market - not restaurant - on the walk through. The menu was totally unexpected from what I had reviewed online. Steaks were expensive 33+ - way overpriced - and nothing else looked good value. We Ended up with Muscles and chips to share in the end which was OK. Chips weren’t down as Belgium double fry but clearly were… saves waist I suppose?!? So steak and Musc. Box not ticked. Don’t mind paying for a nice dinner (Witchery for us the following night and the Ivy / The George’s Steak room for all other meals) but this is CLEARLY geared at “get them in/out” and turn as much as we can from visitors. Again staff saved this from a walk out but it was the lowest of our Easter Hols experiences on this trip.

Seafood chowder is amazing!!! Shellfish platter not recommended, it comes with mostly mussels, one single prawn, one single scallop, and three tiny calamari rings :( .. Toffee pudding very spongy and fresh! Staff are lovely

2nd visit here and it didn’t disappointed. It was clearly a very busy night but the staff were very attentive and still couldn’t do enough for us. The food was fab.

What a disappointing experience. We arrived for a 7:30(19:30) booking and were immediately shown to our table and presented with two oysters on the house. They were delicious. Things took a grand downward turn from there. We had gone to enjoy their “world famous” sharing platter of lobster, langustinos and crab - only to be told at that they were out of everything but crab. Seemed a little early in the evening to already be out of your big-draw dish but okay. Plan B. I ordered a Shellfish Platter and my husband ordered one of their Surf-n-Turf features: pork and mussels with cream sauce. We did order appetizers - soup and haggis wellington - which came quickly and were pretty good. Then came the tortuous wait. An hour after being seated, still no main dishes. No one came by to check us, see if we needed anything, apologize for the wait - nothing. We finally flagged down the server and asked where our food was. He ran to the kitchen and said the wait was because of the pork. An hour wait? Hmm. in the meantime, the upstairs area where we were seated was hideously hot and uncomfortable. We had taken off every layer that we could. Again, no one stopped to offer more beverages. FINALLY at 8:50 (20:50) the food arrived. And the pork chop that had been the cause of the wait was incredibly undercooked. Bright pink in the center and inedible. The waiter looked horrified and took it back to show the kitchen. We ate the rest of our meal, which was mediocre at best, and couldn’t wait to get the hell outta there. The server did take the raw-ish pork dish off of our bill. We really had high hopes for this place. The menu looked fun. But you can find much better mussels and other seafood elsewhere. Don’t bother.

Mussels were tiny and not fresh. Steak wasn’t seasoned and was average and the broccoli side was hard and terrible tasting. Clearly a place that now just caters to the masses of tourists coming through the grassmarket. Won’t be back, sadly.

A Birthday late lunch as they don’t open until 5pm but a fabulous meal well worth the wait. In and out in plenty of of time for our train home. Excellent service - will be back again next year. 5 stars

It’s been a while visiting The Mussel & Steak bar .. but what a treat! It’s still as amazing as the first time I visited .. complementary oysters to start with & steak & mussels for main course.. steak 🥩 cooked to perfection and huge bowl of mussels on the side .. all cooked in a white wine sauce .. plenty of chips to share. I will try to visit more often! Always a treat to visit when we are in Edinburgh 😍

Would have given 5 stars, except we were kept waiting for our table several times. Was asked to come at 8.30pm, instead of 9pm. When we got there, table wasnt ready. was asked to come back at 8.45pm, (still not ready), then 9pm, still not ready. Finally seated about 9.15pm. After that, service was fantastic. The Manager provided a plate of oysters & a complimentary bottle of wine. Service was fantastic, and the entire party loved the food. Cant fault them really, as it was an extremely busy day for them. All in all, I'd highly recommend this place if you are in Edin. We'll definitely be back again. Thanks again for a great evening.

While our waiter was amazing we were disappointed with the food and the ambience. It was very bright, they played loud club music, and the food was mediocre. I feel like for how much they charge it should’ve been a nicer experience.

Great service,with light humour, friendliness and good knowledge of the menu and wines. The place was packed which speaks for itself. My oysters were delicious and my fish main was perfectly cooked. Loved my husbands haggis Wellington and his mussels and steak were both tasty respectively. Thanks for a memorable evening. The only niggle was being charged £4 for bread which was removed from the table before we'd finished it, I didn't notice in time. However this would not prevent us returning nor recommding this ace restaurant.

Delicious food and excellent service. We had the linguini and the mixed seafood platter. Very large portions and extremely tasty. Also had an amazing excellent sticky toffee pudding. Service was very quick.

Brilliant and friendly welcome as always with fabulous service, great food and drinks. We also come to Mussell and Steak as its one of our favourites however not a cheap option.

Set in the historic Grass Market area this bijou restaurant has a pleasant, if noisy, ambience. The service was excellent and the food simply delicious. Oysters are a must which I followed with mussels in white wine and they were simply scrumptious! Toilets could do with being kept a little better but difficult in such a popular, busy place.
