The Latin King restaurant was founded in 1947 by Rose and Jim Pigneri, who immigrated from Terravecchia, Italy to Des Moines. Rose and Jim wanted to bring authentic Italian fare to Des Moines and began this undertaking in earnest upon selling their home to finance the Latin King restaurant lease, which had previously operated as the Cinderella Sandwich Shop (circa 1930) and the Chanticleer Restaurant (circa 1937). Pigneri named the Latin King after New York City’s Latin Quarter and operated the Latin King for 35 years, notably taking only 10 days of vacation time during his tenure. Pigneri sold the Latin King to his third cousin Bob Tursi in 1983.

I booked a reservation to celebrate my husband’s birthday with a couple of our friends. The first waitress that we ordered the appetizers with, unbeknownst to us, left without putting our appetizers in. So we got another waitress who was super friendly but for some odd reason was super loud . Our service ended up being extremely slow! She had to put our appetizers in again which made the wait even longer. Other tables that came in after us were served way before us. (The zucchini strings were delicious by the way.) I specified in our reservation that we are celebrating a birthday, I told the host when we walked in that we are celebrating my husband’s birthday but the waitress still looked like she had no idea we were there to celebrate a birthday. Just not good service all around. It took her almost an hour to take our order and over 30 more minutes to get our food. We were there 2 1/2 hours on a weekday which we were not planning for. We will not be returning. I loved the taste of the gnocchi but it seems like they use bacon instead of pancetta. Disappointing!!

Usual high quality dishes. But every buffet should have SOME sweets. Was not happy that we had to pay full price for full servings of usual menu desserts. Buffet should have had SOME type of sweets, even if not their usual

It was a fun place for dinner. Expected the ravioli to be crispier than it was. More of a wonton taste.

Visited here with my mother. It had been many years since I've been here and everything was delicious. We enjoyed the Bruschetta for a starter and a fresh salad with thier homemade creamy parmesan dressing (Amazing!), then Penne Regine and Pollo Alla Marsala for main dishes and finished with sharing the Tiramisu. The portions are quite large, so there was plenty to take home. Our server was delightful and very attentive. Also loved how other staff were circling the restaurant and assisting with refilling drinks and cleaning up finished plates as you moved on to each seperate dish. Definitely recommend visiting!
