AA 2 Rosette restaurant. The Forge Restaurant in Chester is one of Chester’s best restaurants with delicious food and unrivalled service. With a passion for wild, sustainable British ingredients, and a love of simple cooking over fire and charcoal. The Forge has its kitchen front and centre in the middle of this lovely, and elegant space. Incredible dry-aged beef and wild venison will be found in the maturation cabinets, awaiting their turn on the amazing forge grill, to be lovingly grilled and roasted over beech logs. Head chef Dan Regan, a passionate chef, heads up the young, vibrant team in the kitchen. Combining amazing, wild, sustainable ingredients from land and sea into sumptuous creations that form really memorable eating experiences. We focus on British ingredients, as local to Chester. Our venison, always a hugely popular part of our menus, is harvested from herds on estates that focus on improving biodiversity and deer health – a process we call Farming the Wild.

The Forge is working with Chester Cathedral and will be hosting weekly Chester cathedral tours with Lunch at the Forge. Chester Cathedral can be a very strange place; a massive building which seems to go on forever, with so many nooks and crannies, rooms off passages, dates, odd names for things and a very confusing layout. So how can a visitor make sense of it all? Well, the answer is to take a guided tour; our knowledgeable guides will make sense of the building, tell you about its history and help you to discover the wealth of riches that make this thousand-year-old building so special. Tours will start at the Cathedral at 11am. After your Cathedral tour you will come to the forge to enjoy a fantastic 3 course lunch.

It took 35 mins before we got a drink. The drinks were quite nice when they did get there though. My starter (goats cheese) was lovely but my partner’s (chicken parfait) was quite runny and unpleasant. Our main cane out much rarer than recommended/asked for. Fortunately neither of us mind but if you were a bit pickier it would have been sent back. It was still very tasty though. Overall an average experience, which is a shame because we had a great evening the last time that we visited.

Service let the restaurant down. The venue is nice and has so much potential to be great, however the experience was poor. I won’t be back.

An honest review with constructive feedback. We’d heard mixed reviews leading up to our visit, but went with an open mind. Food: lovely starters, but have had better scallops in Chester. Sharing Steak, pricey but fair value for meat, well seasoned but presentation was severely lacking. Cut into 1inch slabs rather smaller slices. For the price of steak I would have expected a small salad included. Happy to pay for extra sides, which were nice. Dessert was nice. Service: front of house was good, greeted warmly and seated quickly. Moved to a more preferable table on request. Very slow drinks service. Served flat champagne (was changed). Empty glasses left on table for 30 mins without being offered more drinks. At no point were we asked if we enjoyed the meal. Waiting staff not attentive or client focused, but perfectly pleasant. Ambiance: open kitchen was nice, but have never seen chefs standing around before! As we are eating desserts at 9:30 open kitchen had the lights turned off and was being cleaned, and candles on empty tables were blown out. Overall: disappointing night. Hope lessons can be learnt.

We had booked online for the three courses with bubbles but were told this was not available. We had the standard lunch deal and the food was delicious. We both had ham hock croquettes; these were amazing and so filling. Next we had cod and chicken with a side of chips; both tasty. We had lemon meringue and chocolate delice which were wonderful. Bought a bottle of house white as bubbles not provided. Service was lovely. Restaurant was quiet. When paying the bill we were offered the bubbles but we had drunk the wine by then. Lovely meal but spent more than expected due to the bubbles issue. Would go again as food the best.

I booked lunch for myself and husband for his 60th birthday. The service was exemplary, the food utterly delicious. We had pigs cheeks and taramasalata, belly pork and supreme of chicken, chocolate delice and lemon meringue. The food looked beautiful and the desserts were especially outstanding, we left feeling full and very relaxed. We will definitely return again. We love the ambience and the open kitchen. Perfect for a celebratory lunch.

We ordered the Scallops and the Beetroot and goats cheese starters. The beetroot was tasteless and goats cheese cold with a slight char. The Scallop, was on scallop sliced into 3 which was overcooked with no other garnish than a veloute (which was tasty) and 3 springs if rosemary, priced at £15. Needless to say we left after the starters and went elsewhere for the rest of our meal. We told the waiter that the food was substandard and she told the head chef who got really grumpy about it. Not great for an open kitchen. A real shame as I have recommended this restaurant to business associates before and thought I would give it a go. I won't be back in a hurry.
