Empress by Boon is San Francisco’s newest, must-visit epicurean destination, offering a seasonal menu in modern Cantonese gastronomy. Michelin-starred Chef Ho Chee Boon applies traditional techniques to fresh, local ingredients to produce distinctive contemporary dishes infused with Cantonese flavors.

The spacious restaurant occupies the former location of Chinatown’s celebrated Empress of China with striking city views. Delicious tasting menu, personally the food was a little rich for my liking and by the end of the meal I was feeling a little over stuffed, but I would go back again in the future.

The food on the day we went was good though not outstanding. Nice cozy atmosphere and really nice view, though the general ambiance was a little loud to my liking and not particularly intimate. I still think this is a good place for celebrating special occasions.

We enjoyed the wine pairing option and the duck. The server was great explaining the wines and they were paired nicely with each course. We also order the duck. O my, lovely! The skin was crisp and the meat melted in my mouth. The view of San Francisco was exceptional. So glad we went.

This was my second time eating at Empress and I was underwhelmed. Service was lacking and dishes weren’t as flavorful as they were last time I dined in June 2023.

Exceptional Cantonese food. Really brought me back to thinking I was in Hong Kong. Beautiful location once you get upstairs. Views are incredible. Our server could have been more polished. Our busboy was very polished and knew a lot about all the dishes. Very nice dinner.

I think all the food coming out of the kitchen is sous vide, steamed, and plated. It’s what you would expect to eat on a business class flight to China. Not a green vegetable in the entire meal.

Very long service, they didn’t know if a particular bottle of white wine was available: keep waiting for 20 minutes. Last course was a huge portion. I’ve found 4 bones in my course : it is a Michelin starred restaurant it is a big mistake. Intolerable. Nice location but too noisy.

From the greeting to desert this is a first class dining experience. Do yourself a favor and add on the duck…one of the best things we ever ate. And indulge in desert…worth the calories.

We had a fantastic dinner. Period. The cocktails were creative and exceeded our expectations. The food was presented very beautifully. It tasted even better. Our server was fantastic. She was exceptionally knowledgeable about each dish as well as each of the wines that paired with the dishes. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Great experience was running late from catching a show staff was fine with, courses started slow but ended with a bang, food was delicious very worth the price, nice ambience, wasn’t rushed even though stayed after place was supposed to close! 5 stars definitely recommend this place don’t normally frequent china town but this place is a gem.

Overrated and very loud (on a Friday, 5:30PM). A can of tea is $20 (!) with the “kind” reminder of no refill from the server.

Great place for a date night or to entertain out of town guests. The food is good. The courses start out strong, but end on an average note with the noodles and eggplant just typical average Chinese food at the end. The restaurant should rethink the menu and come up with something to end on a special note. I will be back for the ambiance no doubt.

Great menu, amazing food and a very friendly waiter at the table ! Only one con…we reserved our table for 8 pm … arrived at 8 pm sharp … and were finally shown our table at 8h40 pm ! And received our first meal at 9 pm ……

Empress provides a great dining experience value: $110 for an elevated 5-course savory prix fixe. The menu is a mix of classic and contemporary Chinese cuisine, beautifully presented. There were four of us so we added the peking duck supplement (so delicious and worth it) - though if it were two people it is a lot of food with the duck supplement. We were stuffed by the end of the meal. Dessert is not included, but also worth it - creative and thoroughly satisfying, but not so easy to share. With alcohol, dessert, tip, and supplements we ended up at $220/person, but considering the quality of the food and the unique experience, still think this is a good value on the fine dining spectrum. Cocktails are impressive- creative and intriguing. One of the more interesting bar programs in SF. Wine pairings were well done. Some of us skipped the wine pairing and just ordered wine by the glass a la carte and our server did a really good job of helping us decide on those. The room is beautiful with an epic view of San Francisco. Really not a bad seat in the house, though I suspect reservations gets you a slightly better table w/r/t to view (we had reservation and had a great table). If you can time your reservation around sunset, definitely suggest it. The room itself is cavernous and somewhat noisy - can be hard to have a conversation at times. The music tried to provide an upbeat vibe but was TERRIBLE. Not sure how an establishment puts so much care and attention into food, bar, service, interior design, and then pushes play on a crappy pandora/spotify hits list. Or, if you actually have a music consultant, they should be fired. Almost took off two stars just for the music fail. Other than that, would definitely go back.

A beautiful place with a good view of Chinatown. Very accommodating for our guest with several food allergies! Thank you! The cocktails were creative and very yummy! First courses were very tasty; some of our favorite items of the night. The duck add on was one of our favorite items as well. None of us cared for the egg plant dish, not fans of the slimy texture.

This was our first time dinning here. Loved it! The Black Cod was superb. I have not had this dish done at this level since Kyo-Ya at the Palace Hotel close in 2012. Chef Kuni Oshikowa's version was the bar that needed to be met for me and Chef Ho Chee Boon has. The rest of the dinner was also very enjoyable the Mocktails where some of the best I have had in SF. You may not find smoking, foamed or bubbling dishes here (which I find to be a bit of a gimmick) but you will find delicious food prepared very very well. Service was great staff was lovely with just the right amount of friendliness. We were celebrating our 32nd anniversary so it was a bit of a special night made all the more special by the fantastic view of Coit Tower.

My partner is Celiac and can’t have gluten. The restaurant was able to easily accommodate that and provided good substitutions on the prix fixe menu. The decor is nice but the restaurant was moderately loud so it was a bit difficult to hear each other. I appreciated a creative list of mocktails and overall the food was good.

Great service, great views, the space is beautiful and clean. The meal is pretty fast for what it is, but the food was not much past PF Changs, but 6x the cost. Come here for the bar / drinks and views, maybe skip the food.

The ambience was nice and deco was nice. The food has good presentation but the taste was not impressive. Felt rushed with the constant person coming to swipe dishes and utensils, not relaxing.

Just couldn’t justify the price for the food we had. A prix menu, and then charging for dessert felt a little tacky. Oiir primary server was a pro, and very gracious.

I have wanted to visit The Empress since they first opened! I grew up in San Francisco and have much experience with Chinese cuisine, eating in China and Hong Kong and other places with great restaurants so was thrilled by the menu and had high expectations. A beautiful February evening, we ascended to an exciting yet nearly empty room with rustic wooden panels and beautiful teal blue upholstery and refined modern elements. A pulsing, moderately loud beat was pervasive, what I call "Music For Waiters" because it is too energetic for dining, more the pace of working, was playing and continued throughout our two hours. Some of the dishes were remarkably delicate but, some were almost gross in lack of artifice. The shrimp and squid soup were exquisite! The Pork belly, sadly, inedible. A very uneven night was had. The reason I will never return is the experience of visiting the ladies room- through a bar-push double door, down a concrete fire stair two flights, creepy and unstable formica restroom dividers- unacceptable. Not even an attendant in sight. Disrespectful to customers in general...what a shame. There is obvious talent there but it ends up wasted.

Outstanding from start to finish - gorgeous interior, lovely views made each bite of carefully crafted deliciousness even more enjoyable. Attentive service, a table side visit by Chef Boon, it was memorable in all the best ways.

For the price of this restaurant I honestly would have expected better service. It was not bad service, but I would have expected more attention to detail from all staff given the price, as mentioned. We did go on a holiday so I understand they were busy but it was a little disappointing. I am happy I went and tried this restaurant but cannot say I would return, or at least any time soon.

2 people. 1 bottle of $100 wine. Cost $600. Not worth that. Some creative food. Nice views for some tables. We ate early but still got stuck next to the door to the kitchen.
