Serves fresh, bold and innovative food that reflects the history of New Bedford and celebrates the New Bedford fishermen, their catch and their culture.

Menu focuses on local fishermen’s catch of the day, old school seafood favorites and a sprinkling of modern seafood interpretations. Menu ranges from raw bar, to warm and cold lobster rolls, baked cod, bacon wrapped scallops, bouillabaisse and grilled NY Strip.

Large bar and spectacular views of the artful New Bedford Fishing Fleet. Large covered outside deck overlooking the fishing boats and harbor. Centrally located beside the Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Ferries. Large parking lot.

And, of course, the hospitality is second to none. Service is what built the business.

Amazing per usual! We stayed out on the new deck which was super cozy and lit. The food was on point as always. The staff, Ms. Becca and the others who helped were attentive, uniforms clean, and always so kind. Thank you for another great experience.

Well I have to say it was extremely busy and the staff did their best to get people seated. We had a reservation and it was 40 minutes after our reservation time that we were seated. The food was very good. No complaints!! The bartenders need to learn what “Very well Shaken “ means. It’s not a place we shall be going on a Friday or Saturday evening in the future. Just Toooo Busy . We will return any other day of the week.

This was my first time at the Black whale and I will be back for sure. I server Josh was absolutely fantastic and went the extra mile kudos to him. Your food was out of this world and I can’t wait to come back.

Food was great and service was very good. I had a French sparkling rose that was delightful and the scallops gratin appetizer was delicious. We didn't eat on the enclosed deck - while waiting there for our table to be ready, we were not happy with the noise. The soaring rafters and materials used in that dining room brought the noise level well above "energetic" and we asked to be seated in the dining room. The hostess accommodated our request and we enjoyed our dining experience in a room with ceiling panels, cloth banquet seating and wooden furniture - all of which kept the noise level quieter. In the future we'll always request indoor dining when making our reservation.

We sat in the newly enclosed porch. Noise level was horrible. You could barely talk across table to each other. Very disappointed Food was great but couldn’t enjoy

Extremely busy for Mother’s Day. We were seated within 5 minutes of our reservation time. From the hostess, to the staff, especially our Server, Richard, everything was flawless. The food was delicious. We have been to The Black Whale several times, however this, by far, was the best.

We sat right in front of the door in the 4 seat on patio. It was cool/cold from the door opening and closing and very loud, was unable to have a conversation without having to yell.

BEST SEAFOOD EVER! If you like sushi you won’t want to get it anywhere else. It’s made fresh per individual order by chef before your eyes and so, so many choices on menu. We are 72 years old from RI an hour from the coast. We have traveled quite a bit. Our entrees were the best of anywhere we have eaten. I always only eat 1/2 my entree but it was so good I ate the whole thing. Also, location is great; right on the Harbor. 👍👍👍👍👍

The Black Whale never disappoints. I had the lobster Thermidor and my husband had the filet mignon. The lobster was so full and sweet and the scallops and shrimp were delicious. The filet was requested medium well, which I know is a challenge for that cut of meat, but it was cooked to perfection. It was Mother’s Day weekend and it was absolutely packed so it was extremely loud but it was fine. We shared the strawberry shortcake for dessert which was fabulous. Our server Lisa was an absolute love and the service was impeccable. I definitely recommend!

The new improvements at the restaurant makes you feel like being home. Emily who was our waitress was outstanding!!! The food was absolutely delicious!! We will be back in the future!!!

Service, food, ambience were all very good. Calamari needed more dipping sauce but overall was fresh and tasty. Burger, fries with Mac and cheese were all great. Mussels were to die for!!! Sushi was excellent

Food was excellent - mussels, lobster thermidor, lobster roll - but a little slow. Server was pleasant and attentive. One of our favorite restaurants.

The food is always very good. My Wife and I have date night every Friday evening and this is one of our favorite places to go. The service is always awesome.

An outstanding dining experience, as always! The fish was very fresh and perfectly cooked. Richard was the consummate waiter - personable and discreetly attentive at all times. We loved the views from our table by the window.

I find the noise level loud , not energetic both inside and on the newly renovated all season porch. That beind said the porch views are much better.

Always a wonderful dining/drinking experience. A great "hard to make up your mind" menu. Sushi one time and grilled halibut the next. Bartenders are super and the service is excellent.

Seated promptly. Waitress lovely. Food delicious. View fun. Noise level in the patio area where we were NOT sitting was unbearably loud. Mai restaurant fine. Overall loved our dining experience

Thought we would try out the new and improved porch which was lovely with pretty lights and comfortable chairs. Appropriate pictures on the walls. However, the noise level was overwhelming and we could hear the roar of motorcycles outside Our waitress was lovely with punctual service. We enjoyed our favorite boom boom shrimp and then had the cod with crumbs and a sherry sauce. The sauce was hard to enjoy with an overwhelming strong, I think, lemon flavor. I scraped off the top of the fish to avoid the bitter sauce. My husband had the same entree and agreed that the sauce spoiled the fish I think our next visit will be inside, which is still noisy, but not as much as the porch.

My parents (who are in their 70s) live just north of boston area. they have been making the drive down to me a lot more frequently recently .. and now i’m convinced i know why. in the last 6 months or so, there hasn’t been a single time they have been in new bedford area & not INSISTED on taking us out to eat… after the first time we brought them here, they never again asked where did we want to go? they just tell me to make the reservation at black whale. they are seafood lovers and are absolutely hooked…. the food, the atmosphere , the ocean and boats outside. it’s all just perfect. (although my dads very anxiously awaiting the return of the fried clams plate. haha) it’s also a perfect fit for my son who is 4 yrs old and VERY high energy. for whatever reason, this is just about THE ONLY restaurant that he can happily sit and eat and not fuss much or try to be dragging one of us out the door before the food comes. … but when that time inevitably does come when he’s just done & his attn span is shot, the location literally couldn’t be better. (accompanied by an adult obviously) he LOVES to go find some rocks near the railroad tracks .. put them in his tiny pockets. and then throw them in the water… loves to just sit and look at the boats. this place is literally one of the most family friendly restaurants for so many reasons. loved by all. from elderly to tiny people 😂 plus, to be fair, you’ve got one heck of an awesome kids meal menu. he gets the chicken tenders and fries every time and always has a bigger appetite than EVER once that plate arrives in front of him. all the staff is friendly, so accommodating, & genuinely VERY GOOD at their jobs. well selected and well trained. & it shows. proudly. i think this is the only place ive ever eaten at with a party of 12 & only had 1 person waiting on the entire table. she did perfect.didn’t miss a beat. it was actually shocking in an incredible way. i’m not even sure she wrote much down & was all perfect.

Had my favorite booth again, feels like a power seat! Brought old college friend this time and she loved the food and the renovated room. Scallop rolls were so good! Our waiter was efficient and did give us time to chat before ordering our meals.

Food was outstanding! Had a reservation and didn't have any wait time. For a Monday night the place was packed. Service was great, our waiter Cliff was attentive and never waited for anything. I ordered the Steak Frites (med rare), I noticed I didn't have a steak knife, but wanted to cut it to make sure the temp was right, CUT IT WITH THE BUTTER KNIFE AND didn't even need the steak knife. Hubs has sushi and octopus, he was super happy with it all. Definitely will be back!
