Was a little tricky to find, seems to be located near the metro center so we had to walk down a wet and somewhat precarious street to enter through the front. The rack of lamb was delicious, rich and cooked to perfection. Also the beet salad was memorably good, lightly tossed with just the right amount of dressing and the beets were also the perfect temperature and texture; something that seems simple to master, but I realized after eating my share of beet salads, that it is not. A nice surprise was they offered us a lime sorbet before the entree came out; maybe as a palette cleanser. It made me feel like I was having a small dessert before the main meal which I’m not mad about.

This place is a gem. The location used to be Chef's Station. Rebranded as The Alcove, it has the same chef and the same high-quality menu. The food was excellent. The menu is ambitious -- and they live up to it. The lamb was nicely complemented by potatoes, greens, and a great jus. The risotto popped with flavor. It was just right, not salty or cloying. We'll certainly return.

By far my favorite restaurant in Evanston! All three courses were outstanding and the service was unparalleled. They showcased the best of each seasonal ingredient with perfect execution. Although not inexpensive, given the quality of the meal it was much better value than many high end restaurants.

The venue, service, and food were eloquent, excellently attentive, and perfectly delicious respectively. We attended for a birthday occasion, and the staff acknowledged that very tastefully and appropriately. One of the very best restaurants we've eaten at in the past 30 years together.

From the appetizers to the desserts, all bites were outstanding, and the server was attentive. I highly recommend the filet mignon, goat cheese tart, and the bread pudding. The textures and sauces were perfect. We can’t wait to return to this hidden gem.

Wow. Everything was done beautifully and with style. The Swordfish dinner was one of the best fish dinners I’ve had in years. Do NOT miss the desserts. Warm dark chocolate flourless cake was incredible.

We went on a Saturday night. We got to our table a little early and were seated, but no one came to our table for 20 minutes. I flagged someone down and she said she would wait on us. Basically we were there for almost 30 minutes before we got a drink. The restaurant was crowded but not full. They were obviously short staffed. The food was outstanding. Once we ordered, our appetizers and dinner came on a timely basis. Our server was lovely and apologetic about the initial wait to get to us. The decor is nice enough and it isn't loud, which is a nice change from so many other restaurants. I would give it 5 stars for the food, but only 3 stars overall because of the huge time up front that no one came to our table.

In pursuit of culinary exploration across the United States, I have frequented numerous fine-dining establishments to sample the diverse gastronomic offerings of the nation. Drawing upon my background as a former restaurant manager and chef, I meticulously select venues based on culinary acclaim and reputation. Thus, it was my discerning choice to celebrate my 40th birthday at this particular establishment. Regrettably, upon arrival, my guest and I encountered a disconcerting lack of hospitality and professionalism. Initially, we endured a protracted 25-minute wait without acknowledgment from our assigned server. Subsequently, when attended to, the interaction was marred by discourtesy, exemplified by inappropriate addressing and an absence of customary pleasantries. Notably, the delay in beverage service, compounded by inadequate communication regarding its cause, further exacerbated our dissatisfaction. Moreover, the subsequent lapse in delivering our cocktails, attributed to ingredient unavailability, resulted in chilled appetizers and a conspicuous disregard for our dining experience. Despite our efforts to seek clarification, the lack of acknowledgment or rectification from the assigned server was conspicuous and disappointing. As a seasoned professional adhering to the industry-standard '10-minute greet rule', such oversights are markedly below acceptable standards. Admittedly, the culinary offerings, particularly the entrees, salvaged the dining experience, showcasing seasonal variety and culinary finesse. However, the prolonged wait for dessert, lasting an additional 20 minutes despite the restaurant's diminished patronage, underscored systemic service deficiencies. While appreciative of the gesture to comp our beverages and birthday dessert, it is disconcerting that such remedial measures were necessitated by sub par service rather than proactive attentiveness. A sincere apology from the server or the front-of-house manager would have been more fitting!!!

We are continuing to manage staff shortages and changes (including a new server the night you visited), and apologize that the circumstances negatively dictated your experience. We attempted to rectify the situation by comping your beverages and birthday dessert, but recognize that no amount of compensation can make up for poor service. We're very happy to hear, however, that you enjoyed the meal itself, particularly as it relates to ingredient seasonality--a component of the restaurant that we pride ourselves in. 4.5 stars overall. Ate here for an anniversary dinner and husband and I enjoyed our experience! - ambiance: it was nice and surprisingly quiet considering its under a train - service: staff were so kind. Service was pretty fast and efficient. - food: for appetizer we had the pan seared foie gras. While it was delicious, we did find the portion size small, especially if we compare to other restaurants that serve foie gras in a similar price point. I had the duck breast and my husband had the lamb and both were delicious! Flavors were there, it was cooked in medium rare, and even the side vegetables were good. For dessert we had the goat cheesecake and it was a surprise hit for us.

On a Thursday night: The food was outstanding! The "Old fashion" was average (a lot of crushed ice instead of one large piece). No music. On the check the tip suggestions start with 18% and go all the way to 30% and applied on the after tax and 3% Credit Card surcharge total. Really?

The chef is amazing, and my husband and I loved our five-course Valentine's Day meal. We had scallops, risotto, steak, pork belly, sea bass, sorbet and chocolate mousse. It was presented very beautifully, and the environment was peaceful. However, they were understaffed and it took us 3.5 hours to get served. We waited about half an hour for a piece of bread and for someone to come and take our drink order. It was an hour after we got seated before we got the first course. But the wine pairings were excellent. I think the problem was that they took too many reservations and didn't have enough staff to serve the food in a timely manner. I hope that next year the staffing issues can be resolved.

It was the WORST experience I have ever had in a restaurant. Once the hosted walked my girlfriend and I to the table, we didn't even were glad by any server in the first 20 minutes. It was a disaster 5-course dinner option, and for us, in order to get the food, we had to wait around 1 HOUR for each of the first 3 courses (3 HOURS in total) and by the way we had to remind our waitress that they have just skipped one of the courses, absolutely awful. The food was good but it was cold once it arrived at our table. At that point, I didn't even care. After all they made us wait, I just wanted to eat. If you want to waste your money and have a nightmare dinner, this is the place you must go.

I dined here for Valentines Day with my wife. Our experience was disappointing and bizarre. After arriving for our reservation we waited 15 minutes with no service, then were asked if we had been attended to. It was another 10 minutes before our drink order was taken, and 35 minutes after our arrival that we were given our drinks and a single slice of bread that had been cut in half to split between the two of us. It took about an hour after arriving to get our first course. Around this point the power went out for a moment. For our subsequent 4 courses it took upwards of half an hour for each course to arrive. At one point we were brought a course we had already had, but noticeably with only half a portion on each plate. If we had not already had that course, would they have tried to give us half the amount of food with no explanation? After we had been there for 3 hours and still not gotten the last course, a server apologized for the wait and explained that the power outage messed up their computers and several orders/tables were wiped from their system. By the time we paid we had been at the restaurant for almost 4 hours. We were charged the full price of $125 per plate plus tax with no offer to comp any portion of the meal despite the snafus. The restaurant appeared to have plenty of waitstaff but we were not really checked on. The folks at the tables around us also had to deal with members of their party needing to leave after only a couple courses due to the long wait times and being brought incorrect items repeatedly. I feel that the power outage explains some of the issues but doesn’t account for the long wait after arriving, the lack of explanation of the delay before we had already been there three hours, or not being offered at least some more bread during the long wait times. I completely understand that unexpected things happen, but steps can be taken to still ensure a pleasant or at least understandable experience.

Valentine's dinner. Our first visit. Prix Fixe 5 course $125 pp. Cocktails, wines, and food were excellent. Ambiance, nice . Noise, pleasantly surprised as we were skeptical with proximity to Metra rail. Our only critique was the pace of service. The kitchen could not keep up and seemed uncoordinated. Just over 3 hours and tables seated first were eclipsed by others arriving later. Loved the spice flair added to their version of old-fashioned. Kueme NZ Chardonnay was yummy.

I’m sorry to say service was mixed, some good, some not so much. After waiting at our table for 45 minutes with no food (our daughter waited 65 minutes), we had to ask for bread. Finally a while thereafter we were served our first course of a prix fixe menu, even though others had long since been served. Sadly, the quality of the food was also uneven. The scallops, pork and dessert were exquisite. Unfortunately the beef and sea bass were more average. In spite of all this, we do want to try the restaurant again because it is charming and has so much potential.

The food and service could not have been any better. All four of us commented that Elle, our server, was everything one would ask for, she was thoughtful in her comments and in answering our questions and making some perfect suggestions. Every dish from the beet salad to the entrees to the dessert was wonderful. Was it a little pricey, yes, it was but we will happily return, (and ask for Elle as our server) for special occasions.

Waitress was nice and checked in often. Staff bringing food up was heavy handed for some reason. Seemed like a grizzled veteran who didn’t have time to be gentle with plates haha. Overall good ambiance, we enjoyed the fresh flower on the table.

This was a great experience, good food & ambiance. I forget our servers name but she was a wonderful woman with an English accent. Really enjoyed this place

Everyone who has been to the Alcove (formerly known as Chef's Station) loves it, but more people need to come here and fall in love with it. Chef Romero's cuisine is as fine as you can get anywhere. My wife and I have been coming for many years and have never been disappointed. Last night I had the quail appetizer and sablefish entree, and my wife had the tuna tartare appetizer and the short ribs entree, and all were superb. I almost never eat with my fingers, but last night I picked up the quail bones and sucked every bit of meat I could get. In addition, the severs are both intelligent and attentive. If you haven't tried this place, you don't yet know what you're missing, but you can change that.

This restaurant by far is one of our favorites in Evanston. We ALWAYS have a phenomenal meal and service. Everything is always prepared beautifully with exceptional flavor. Cocktails and desserts are excellent as well. The chef never disappoints! WG

Fabulous restaurant. Delicious and original. Fine service. It is expensive but worth the splurge. Every course was an adventure and a delight.
