Comfort food from Kerala, India's spice garden. Thattu is located in the beautiful Chicago neighborhood of Avondale. It was born of Chef Margaret Pak’s love for the southwest Indian coastal cuisine of Kerala. Our menu brings you traditions of Kerala along with playful interpretations from our culinary team. Rich with aromatic spices, coconut and curry leaves, the cuisine is a celebration of the bounty of the land and the sea.

Second visit to Thattu and they did not disappoint! Food was excellent! The mussels are a must eat dish! Fun way of ordering on your phone once you are seated and no tipping. We will be back soon.

The meen pollichathu was very, very good; vegetable ishtu and appam as well as the beef puff were ok; the tapioca bonda was ok as well. The New York Times had recommended this to be one of the top 50 restaurants in the country--that it is most certainly not.

Very good food though a bit mild for my tastes. Apam is execellent! I definitely plan to return try the short ribs.

Not your typical restaurant -- love that the staff gets paid well and does revenue sharing, so no tipping. Also atypical in that you create an order on your phone, pay the bill, and voila - that's how you order and pay. Foodwise, we loved most things and liked a few. Mushrooms with pea puree were so delicious, as was the black chickpea curry. Didn't care as much for the vegetable ishtu dish. Be sure to ask what is spicy or not; not always clear on menu. Will definitely return.

A few things first: I am no stranger to Indian food. I have dined at friends' houses where food from Kerala was cooked and served. I love the cuisine in general. For me to be blown away when we dined at Thattu would be an understatement. The food was authentic. Vibrant. A far cry from the generic North Indian or South Indian fares available throughout the city. The flavors stayed with me long after we had returned home. We ate to our heart's content and yet we never felt overly stuffed. I would go there again and again. Needless to say, I highly recommend this unique restaurant that truly focuses on a region's cuisine.

All the dishes were so unique, fresh, and a party for the tastebuds! So refreshing and different from the typical Indian food, you would get on Devon Avenue. Lots of selections for a vegetarian, and the meat dishes are succulent. The ambience is refreshing, too, with splashes of color. Very friendly and accommodating weight staff. I would definitely come again and recommend the restaurant to others.

Food is outstanding as always, flavors are surprising yet somehow cozy. Every dish hit. For deliciousness and execution of the food, it's better than most Chicago restaurants that charge twice as much per head. Dealing with a QR code is kind of a buzz kill, but it's nice not having to wait for your server to close out, and the people working on the floor are kind and helpful.

Chef Margaret is such a talented chef and clearly has put together a great team. The food was exceptional, each dish unique and packed with flavor (I think about the tilapia in banana leaf almost daily). Definitely a new favorite spot and one we plane to come back to often.

The quality of food ingredients - fish, chicken, etc. was very good. However, the flavors could have been more pronounced. I have Keralite friends and have tasted their cooking and love it. I wish there was a Kerala fish fry on the menu

We couldn’t get in for dinner, but stopped en route to the airport for a fabulous lunch. The owners were gracious, and the food fabulous in the tradition of Kerala cuisine with the chefs own subtle twists. Can’t wait to return. Highly recommend Thattu It’s a casual dining experience and a very friendly atmosphere .

The food was very unique the spice was very a thin take not your usual South Indian fair. It was like home cooking of Kerala. Remind you of dishes in the best selling book the Covenant of water

Delicious dinner! All of us loved every dish. I’m not crazy about the app ordering process. It makes it feel like a more casual restaurant. The staff did a good job telling us about the menu and dishes even though they didn’t not take our order.

Quality of the food is not what it used to be. Parottas felt like the frozen ones. Some dishes were too salty and some weren’t seasoned at all. Portions are small for the price point.

Appam was a very good size. The Yucca Kappa Bonda was delicious but would recommend providing an even number. Hard to share three of them between two people. The beet puff was well crafted but needs a bit more filling. We felt the pastry overtook the flavors. Eggplant theeyal was delicious! Good service. Easy order and pay system. The Pazhanjan cocktail was yummy!
