Comfort food from Kerala, India's spice garden. Thattu is located in the beautiful Chicago neighborhood of Avondale. It was born of Chef Margaret Pak’s love for the southwest Indian coastal cuisine of Kerala. Our menu brings you traditions of Kerala along with playful interpretations from our culinary team. Rich with aromatic spices, coconut and curry leaves, the cuisine is a celebration of the bounty of the land and the sea.

Wonderful find. Superb Kerala cuisine, fancied up a little bit. Very basic restaurant with totally automated ordering. And no tipping. We love the food each and everything we had. Special shout out to the fried chicken bites. Delicious dessert pops from pretty cool. Can’t wait to return.

Great food! My first taste of Indian food from the Karela region and I’m a big fan. This place is all about the food. We didn’t know that and booked it for a special occasion. The flavors made up for all that was lacking in ambiance and service. Good thing our guest of honor is a casual guy. Favorite dishes: fried chicken apps, shrimp, pork chop, and fish wrapped in a banana leaf mains. Don’t expect explanations or detailed descriptions on the menu. You order yourself from your table on an app. Just trust.

Food was interesting and plated beautifully. Great place to make Indian food accessible to non Indians. I thought most things needed salt.

The kerala chick pea curry was the best curry I’ve had. Complex flavors and spices. I already want more.

Great food. I would not hesitate to return for the meal. Everything we had was delicious and we pretty much had most things on the menu. I agree with other reviewers that the chicken bites were probably the best. But really can’t go wrong with the pork chop or other entrees as well. No dedicated waiters but when we did have a question about the food, the gentleman delivering the food did have someone come to answer further questions. Interior is modern, but not particularly inviting. Perhaps more decorations or pictures from the south of India would help. At the moment it’s an industrial look, which is fine —just not inviting. Everyone in the party was happy we tried it out and willing to come back.

Second visit to Thattu and they did not disappoint! Food was excellent! The mussels are a must eat dish! Fun way of ordering on your phone once you are seated and no tipping. We will be back soon.

The meen pollichathu was very, very good; vegetable ishtu and appam as well as the beef puff were ok; the tapioca bonda was ok as well. The New York Times had recommended this to be one of the top 50 restaurants in the country--that it is most certainly not.
