Must have been due to mother's day, but overall experience was subpar vs prior visits; waiters were slow to attend to us, chicken dish came out raw in some parts, the bill came back incorrect and had to spend time course correcting; for price that's being paid, would expect 0 issues

Superb fine dining with expert staff. Our sommelier, James, helped us choose the perfect French wine and my lobster & ravioli entree, described by our fun waiter Ryan, was unbelievable. This is one of the best in the city with a neighborhood vibe.

Spruce has been one of our favorite restaurants but I need to give the owners some constructive feedback after last evening's dinner. The food was good but not great given the price points ( yes, we can afford it, however). The wine list prices, compared with Boulevard ( including a $65 corkage fee) is excessive. Finally, we appreciated the friendly staff as usual, but our main server did not offer to tell my group about the up charges for white asparagus, lobster main, etc ( I had to interrupt him and have him tell my guests about the up charges for those items...this never happened before and is not acceptable; yes, my guests ordered those items anyway and they could afford it. It's just the right thing to do. So, this was not my best experience at Spruce last evening.

Everything would be 5 stars except that the amuse bouche was presented on a bed of small stones. A stone stuck to the bottom of mine,. I couldn't see that before I put it in my mouth, and I didn't even know that they were stones until afterward. I chipped a tooth. Everything else was great, including the amuse bouche itself. But I can't give five stars for food or value when the food has caused a dentist visit and the dentist is going to cost me time, money and probably discomfort. At the same time, I can't take off too much for the chef failing to anticipate this risk of this type of plating. If I'm the first person this has happened to, it's like a freak accident.

Spruce remains my second favorite restaurant in the city (behind Boulevard). It really stepped up its game with yesterday’s meal, though. The food, as always, was superb: veloute, white asparagus, scallops and a chocolate tart. Service was very attentive; in fact, for the first time since the pandemic, my iced tea was refilled several times before the last one was done (that’s the mark of people who pay very close attention to their customers). Best, though, was just before the check arrived, a dessert cart with 8 or 10 (or so) choices arrived at the table and I could choose six. That was the piece de resistance.

A very special treat brunch for my daughter's birthday. Every single thing was spectacular. We had the caviar service (their new way), and it was like eating a picture. The ONLY mild criticism is I would have left off the bacon/pork belly. I LOVE caviar and it masks the flavor too much for my taste. They brought a brunch cake that was a combination of shortcake/cake baked with strawberries and cream cheese - my daughter and I both bake and want the recipe - it is worth every calorie. Always such a wonderful experience.

Service was excellent! They even gave the birthday celebrants a birthday card and did not add 2 champagne orders in our final tab. We even got a cake on top of the dessert for the celebration. The birthday celebrant was very happy!

The food was good but the specials are very pricey and not worth it when ot comes to quantity. Wine list is amazing but similarly, prices are out of touch with reality

Overall experience was great however food could use improvement - beignets were undercook on the inside. The wagyu ribeye was very chewy (albeit we were made aware it was more lean) however if you’re going to offer wagyu why not be very marbleized at that point? Duck was great. Artichoke soup was great. Asparagus was asparagus.

Love this place! Slightly disappointed in greeting staff.....I had a reservation, showed up on time with a bar request and was shown initially and awful table! We were dressed appropriately and just a party of 2. Just a strange vibe by initial staff showing us to our table....

It was our anniversary (a notable one) and we had a reservation for 8:15. We arrived 5 minutes early and waited almost an hour until we were finally seated at 9:05pm!! We tried to leave after 30 mins waiting but they assured us they were just getting our table ready. 25 mins later they seated us… Our waitress was delightful. Our sommelier was a novice (the wine list is a weighty tome). The food was mostly very good but not out of this world. It’s a bit of a scene in there. Clearly very popular. Mostly over the top. We probably won’t return but we enjoyed our anniversary together observing the scene and conversing with one another. The tables and seating and noise level were comfortable for easy conversation. They made a fuss over our anniversary and gave us an additional dessert, the plate inscribed with good wishes. Although we were unable to finish the other desserts as a result, we appreciated the attention. Overall I would say it’s over rated but fun to try once.

This meal was everything I'd hoped it would be. We were delayed in getting seated, which was a bit of a pain, but service throughout the meal made up for this and it was a fantastic birthday celebration.

Spruce never disappoints. Delicious food and very knowledgeable wait staff/sommelier. Service was a little slow that day because of a large party in the restaurant, but overall it was fine. The presentation of the salade Nicoise was particularly stunning, with a wreath of greens and flowers surrounding medallions of tuna. Always worth a visit for a special occasion!

Spruce under Chef Richard is on track in our opinion to recover its Michelin star and maybe more. The prix fixe menu comprises three courses but is complemented by a variety of amuses bouches, all of which were beautifully presented and, of course, delicious as well. My husband particularly enjoyed the nantes carrot fagotini as first course and the wild mushroom risotto verde which he had with the truffle supplement as his second course. Both were superb. I had the shelled Maine lobster served with small ravioli with a delicious filling. Desserts (guanaja chocolate tartelette and the apple tatin) were fully on a par with the rest of menu. Robin, our server, was excellent, and Jordan the sommelier was knowledgeable and helpful in helping us pick a St. Aubin that paired well with our first two courses. A specially nice touch was the care with which all the courses were matched with the plates used to serve them.

The biggest reason I like going to Spruce is that it’s hugely expensive and very deserving of every dollar. It’s one of the few restaurants that treats women in the same manner that they treat men. Every time I go there, I am so happy to be respected and valued as a customer because it doesn’t happen all that often. I think that the food is unbelievable as is the presentation and I happen to love the decor of the restaurant. It is a treat that I hope I will continue to partake for the rest of my life. Yum!

Returning customer for years. Never a disappointment, from beginning to end. The service is polite, caring and make you feel at ease. The presentation of the food, appetizing. Quality of food, tasty. This time I found the portion of food served is larger, well worth its value. I will certainly return again. Highly recommended.

Food was quite good as were the drinks - I would recommend the place on that alone. When we walked in we were greeted in a very friendly manner and we're offered bar seating without the price fixed menu which was an awesome suggestion. I was very impressed. The burger was good and the pastrami sandwich was excellent as we're the fries. The issues? It took over ten minutes to even be acknowledged at the table - no greeting, no water, no anything. I mentioned it to the server who did accept the comment graciously and proceeded to try and make things better though he had a habit of disappearing once in a while. At this price point, I actually expect better service. The kicker, however, was the addition of a 20% service fee without mentioning it when the check arrived - that is unacceptable. Fortunately, my dining partner caught it before we finalized the bill. That is a very sleazy move I would expect in South Beach but not at a restaurant of Spruce's caliber in San Francisco. Turned me off completely.

We had a bit of sticker shock since the bill was considerably higher then it was the last time we were there a couple of years ago, but if you have $400 to spend on a dinner for two, Spruce is a good place to do it! The ambience is elegant, the food delicious, and the service extraordinary. The servers at Spruce are nothing short of psychic. They know exactly what you need and when you need it. They don't hover but they're always there at exactly the right time. Our server, Breanne (total guess to the spelling!), added to that an element of fun. She knew it was a special occasion and figured it out that this is something we can't afford to do very often. Not only did she describe all of the dishes, enabling us to make an educated decision including ordering a dish we never would have thought to order had she not suggested it. As we were finishing that particular dish, she asked us if we had enough bread to sop up the sauce. We normally would not have done anything so gouche at so classy a restaurant, but with her explicit suggestion we dug in and didn't leave a drop of that delicious sauce behind. They also treated us to a couple of extra appetizers on the house and after we payed the check, brought out an array of little treats, telling us to help ourselves. We were full, so we asked if we could take home an assortment and they gave us one of each to enjoy later. Completely unexpected, it topped off a perfect evening. If you have something to celebrate, and want to splurge on a perfect dining experience, I can't think of a better place to do it!
