Located 5 minutes from the Convention Center, and a mere 10 minutes from Petco Park or the Rady Shell by foot, we are your new favorite spot for slow-smoked brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and craft beer. Smokin J's BBQ won Reader Magazine's poll for Best BBQ in San Diego in 2022 and at our spot in the Gaslamp Quarter we strive to create a warm and inviting atmosphere perfect for date nights, family outings, Sunday football, weekend brunch, or for anytime you want eat a great meal with great people. Great accidental find. Great atmosphere, loved the food “tv dinners”. Prime rib was outstanding. We will be back and bring friends.

Nice bbq lunch before the Women’s Gold Cup final. Surprised it wasn’t busier. The pork was delicious, as were the ribs. All the sides ordered were so good (Mac n chz, beans, fries, coleslaw)! I feel like this spot puts an emphasis on their sides. Not always the case at many bbq joints who sometimes place uneven importance on the meats.

Best brisket/pork belly sandwich ever. So very delicious. Pulled pork sandwich also delicious. Wonderful family owned restaurant. Highly recommend. Will always come back when in San Diego.

Made a reservation to celebrate a wedding anniversary. Have three l young children who enjoyed the food. Service was very attentive to our needs which made our meal much more enjoyable. Service checked on us multiple times and even gave us a slice of pie for our celebration. Definitely recommend the brisket and the sides were great too

Food was good! I appreciate that there was a choice between fatty and lean brisket, we choose fatty and it was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The corn bread with honey butter was also great! Even my son who usually dislikes corn bread said it was not bad.

Visiting from out of town and very glad we did. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The food was amazing. I recommend trying the 3X3 so you get a taste of everything. We also got the Smokin J Sandwich and it was great. Highly recommend and I will be back next time I am in town.

First timers for us at Smokin J’s BBQ; and the visit did not disappoint. Immediately, we were greeted by the Smokin J’s team and escorted to our table. We got there during happy hour so we ordered a draft beer for $4 and BOGO tacos. My husband and I shared the 3 x 3. Each meat (brisket, ribs and pulled pork) melted in your mouth; so flavorful. I loved the fact that a bottle of BBQ sauce was placed on the table so that you could regulate the amount of sauce on your meat. Three sides were served with the meat: bean “crack,” mac n’cheese, and slaw. My favorite, the beans — seemed like they had been cooked for hours with a sweet molasses taste to it. For the taco BOGO, we ordered one brisket and one carne asada. The meat was placed in a fried corn taco shell. I liked them both equally. However, the highlight of the meal was when the waitress brought over a complimentary piece of pecan pie for my husband’s birthday celebration. The homemade, flaky crust had a salty taste to it which complemented the sweet but not over-the-top sweet taste of the pie. When topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, I thought I had died and went to heaven. Definitely plan on returning.
