While Slanted Door is opening this new location in Napa, it all began with an idea to open a Vietnamese crêpe stand or a noodle shop in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Charles Phan searched for a location but was told that there were already too many Vietnamese restaurants in the area. He moved the search to his own neighborhood: the Mission. He quickly found an available space on Valencia Street.

The Slanted Door was born in 1995 with the goal of elevating Vietnamese food to the next level—modern design, sustainable local ingredients, quality teas, and wine pairings. The Slanted Door was quickly recognized and became too small to accommodate the reservation requests. The growing restaurant moved to South of Market in 2002. It was there that the team integrated a craft cocktail program, which was one of the first restaurants in San Francisco to offer craft cocktail menus. The Slanted Door moved again to the San Francisco Ferry Building in 2004.

I was an early adopter starting in the 1990's at Slanted Door's original SF location. Slanted Door is simply without peers in their unique Asian meets California cuisine. I was vey saddened when their stellar restaurant SF's Ferry Building closed. Though it was touted as temporary, alas that was not the case. Now Slanted Door Napa, CA is a devotee's only chance to keep the spirit alive.

Excellent food and well paced. Really enjoyed the meal and the wine (Ghostblock - Sauvignon Blanc) but they also have a Ghostblock - Cabernet Saugignon for which we were originally charged. No drama, check was updated to reflect the correct price, but review your check before paying. ($180 difference!)

The room was relatively empty for our lunch reservation which did wonders for quieting the usually loud indoor seating section. The food and service were exceptional: the ribs are phenomenal as were the noodle/salad protein bowls we had for our entrees. Lunch certainly presents a much better bang for the buck than dinner, although the lunch tab for 4 was over $250 w/only 1 cocktail, 1 lemonade and 2 bottles of sparkling water (so little alcohol).

The Slanted Door was a very nice surprise. We were in Napa for 1 night, and I found this restaurant recommended on Eater. It has a modern, cool setting with food and drinks to match. It is modern, sophisticated Vietnamese, and I highly recommend.

We used to go to the slanted door in San Francisco, and the food quality of this restaurant does not compare. Unfortunately, I have also been to the San Ramon one which is good, not great, disappointed that this was not better. The ambience was nice. The service was very good but the food Very very average unfortunately…

The food is good but pricey. 20% mandatory tip is a bit much. The wines by the glass are light pours. Red wine in white glasses is a bit pedestrian for a restaurant expected to be on the higher end.
