My wife and I had a fabulous dinner at Shahel. It is a very unique hidden destination where you feel like you've been transported to another dimension of sights, smells, sounds, and tastes in a quiet romantic environment. Generous portion sizes so you can definitely share the dishes. Be sure to bring a tiny flash light or a cell phone with a light because it's a very dim lighting. Even better, look at the menu online for a sneak preview! Staff were very accomodating and found us the perfect table!

Beautiful hidden gem, relaxing and romantic--my friend and I felt like we were in a spa about to get massages. A true oasis, we felt like we weren't even in New York anymore. Food and drink was all delicious, fresh, great quality, and the server was kind to explain what arak was because it was my first time trying it (I loved it). I look forward to returning soon. An instant favorite.

Hidden gem! Super cute underground find . Dark but comfortable, feels like you are transported to Middle East . The food was excellent, the drinks were great! No rush , cozy and perfect for catching up with an old friend. Will be coming back on Friday :)

The restaurant seems to appeal to those seeking a romantic date night, but it was too dark to see any thing on the plate or menu. The menu attempts to be authentic, but the food was overall disappointing. The appetizers were a miss, with small teaspoons of mediocre tzatziki and baba ganoush and a large scoop of overwhelmingly spicy and bitter harissa (in my opinion, better used as an ingredient in cooking). Out of the main courses we tried, the salmon was dry, overcooked, and on a plain bed of rice. The lamb stew and vegetable moussaka were acceptable but lacked salt and other flavor, and the bacalao was also pretty flavorless. For the desserts, the pasteis de nata was good but the kataifi was far from what you would expect from a traditional mediterranean restaurant (should have been crispier, flakier, and more flavorful). At this price point, we have had higher-quality experiences in Manhattan.

Dining at Shalel feels like you escape to another world. It is so romantic and cozy it makes for a perfect date night spot. The food was incredible and the portions were huge! Can't wait to go back!

My friend and I made a last-minute reservation for a May Friday night, and surprisingly we found a spot for 8:00 pm. The ambiance is low-lit and intimate, perfect for a date! I ordered the broccolini salad and babaganoush. It was fresh, flavorful, fantastic, and the perfect size. But my top recommendation from the night? The cardamom espresso martini!!!

The seat was too low relative to the table. It was hard to sit and eat comfortably. The upholstery was old and dingy looking. Food was decent and service was also good

Charming, hidden Upper West Side gem serving excellent Middle Eastern cuisine. I loved the seafood stew and my dining partner enjoyed the dish with lamb meatballs and chickpeas. Definitely a place to return to when in the Lincoln Center area.
