Traditionally inspired from dishes, ingredients & techniques spanning the Malay archipelago, namely Singapore & Indonesia. Regionally influenced by Northern California’s palette of producers, produce, and presentation. Essentially: expressing these tropical, cosmopolitan island flavor profiles through the abundance of what thrives in Northern California’s Mediterranean climate and terrain. Nusantara cuisines could be characterized as intense, rich, spiced (more than spicy). Steeped in time and layers of complexity, both in the kitchen and in the long history of diverse peoples in this part of the world. Chef Nora Haron draws from this wealth of culinary knowledge, plus contrasting Californian influences, which some could say to be the polar opposite: that deconstructed-composed, whole-ingredients-laid-bare simplicity, the lightness that has evolved in California eating through the few decades of this relatively young place.

Made a reservation for the front of the restaurant and we were placed in the back room where there were no other people seating. This caused the servers to not pay attention to us. Took a long time to get our order in and even longer for food to come out. Portions of food were not consistent amongst the same dish.

Interesting food - my wife lived in Holland and loves Indonesian food, but it is very hard to find in the Bay Area - well they have it here, pretty traditional with some fusiony elements. It is a very nice restaurant with some seating overlooking the sidewalk. The food is very well prepared, and the service is excellent. The drinks are delicious and they have a very nice wine selection.

Very good food. Great flavors, presentation was great, the rendang beef was really good was was the turmeric rice. Very friendly service.

Mediocre service on Mother’s Day. We had to retrieve water on our own from the kopi bar area after waiting for 10 mins for the server. Before ordering, we asked the waitress if the appetizer was spicy because we wanted to order something non spicy for our children. She confirmed that it was not spicy and that it was appropriate for young children. However, the dish came out to be spicy and not kid friendly at all. Food was great but disappointed with the service provided.

Excellent customer service. Got seated right away in a nice area of the restaurant. The staff were friendly and attentive. Kudos to our server George who provided awesome service. The food were delicious, good size and beautifully arranged in the plate/bowl. Overall, we highly recommend and we’ll definitely be back again.

We attended Sandai’s Anniversary dinner. The nasi tumpeng celebratory rice tray for two was not only beautiful to look at but was a combination of so many amazing dishes… the beef rendang, curried chicken wings, cod, shrimp satay, peanut savored salad, etc. Chef Nora wandered around the restaurant and talked to the patrons… a nice touch. Sandai is a unique restaurant among streets of Walnut Creek.

We participated in a wonderful cocktail mixology class at SanDai. Such a great insight into the fresh, complex and artfully balanced drinks the restaurant serves every day. The class was really fun, the staff was so smart and engaging, the ingredients (complete with a framed description and list of ingredients) were fabulous and unique -- and the results were sublime! We were so impressed, my friend and I booked dinner there with our husbands as soon as we finished the class. Bravo and happy First birthday SanDai!

SanDai is a gem in the heart of downtown Walnut Creek. If you are looking for an amazing, delicious, and elegant brunch experience then you must visit this establishment. I highly recommend the Pandan Liege Wafile and the Nasi Goreng Set.
