At San Matteo Pizzeria e Cucina located in the Upper East Side of New York City, guests enjoy authentic Neapolitan pizzas, panuozzi and other Italian favorites. Panuozzi, which is made with charred pizza dough that is folded over and stuffed with tasty ingredients, is growing in popularity, especially in the New York City pizzeria scene. San Matteo Pizzeria e Cucina has mastered this unique dish with its selection of panuozzi. Because San Matteo Pizzeria e Cucina is open until 11 p.m., it is a suitable place for late-night meals with family or friends. Sip on a glass of red or white wine while partaking in popular menu items like the pancetta panuozzo, which features dry-cured pancetta, provolone cheese, black pepper and artichokes, and the Diavola pizza, which is topped with fresh basil, homemade mozzarella, spicy soppressata and parmigiano reggiano.

Excellent food—incredible pastas, cooked perfectly. David, our server, was amazing—friendly, professional and helpful. Would absolutely recommend and return again when back in town.

We enjoyed the “curtain” of prosciutto with burrata….excellent! Margarita pizza also delish…don’t forget the cannoli! Service was prompt and courteous Would definitely recommend

I selected this restaurant off of Google and was pleasantly surprised as to the quality of the pizza - not the usual same old, same old. I met an old friend and wanted to really talk, but the tables were a little bit.....on top of each other? Not terribly so, but enough that anything beyond pleasant chit chat wasn't possible, as the table next to you could hear every word. Would definitely go there again for a group thing if happy hour type gathering, but not exactly the place for a private dinner.

Love the food! We go often. Our regular waitress is awesome. Very good steak. Pizza and pasta are musts. We have had reservations several times that front of house has messed up, been a bit rude about. Never welcoming when you walk in. Our waitress makes up for it but it’s still a bad way to start a meal.

We had a good experience. Service was attentive even though the place was very busy. The homemade mozzarella was amazing! Pizza and salads were very good. The pizza was a little too soggy for me but that may have been due to the toppings on mine. Really good food overall.

Food & service is very good! Our server Alexandra was awesome, along with the guys keeping the water glasses filled! Can be a little loud with small tables, but the yummy food outweighs that!

Love San Mateo! Food is always so good, fresh and classically Italian. Always love their spinach salad, also enjoyed the arugula salad tonight. Regina Margherita pizza was spot on and the Spaghetti Cartoccio was delicious, although without the pesto, zucchini or cherry tomatoes listed in menu. Mushrooms and cheese only....what's with that? I have had this dish many times and was quite surprised when it was liberated from its foil envelope. Whatever it was, it did taste good. Added a Paesana pizza, which was yummy, especially when added hot honey and some red pepper flakes. Will be back - but next time will check the Spaghetti Cartoccio before the server leaves the table!

Best pizza we’ve had in New York! We booked and we seated immediately even though we were a little early. Staff very efficient and friendly. We all ordered pizza and they were so delicious - traditional thin base with puffy crust. Very good for families too, staff were friendly with the kids, and there’s an ice cream salon opposite!

Authentic Neapolitan cuisine in the heart of Manhattan. I am Italian and this was a comeback here after my first time last year. Best pizza I’ve ever had in US. Zucchine alla scapece and melanzane funghetto highly recommended.

OMG is all I have to say! This was some of the best pizza I’ve had. Dough light and billowy yet chewy and crisp. Just superb. Great salad and fabulous zucchini app. Small place, nothing fancy but wow, the food was fantastic!

This place is one of my top 5 favorites in NYC. The food here is outstanding. We always get the same thing: eggplant app, pizza, steak and chicken parm. And then take home the award winning San Matteo Burger (on pizza bun) for the next day. Already cant wait to go back.

Our table of 6 was very happy with everything we tried. Service and food are outstanding. Ambiance is casual, fun, dynamic and bright. We over-ordered by 30-50% but wanted to try so many dishes. The standout was the panuozzo di bartolome - not to be missed!!! Loved the cacio e pepe pizza and the special pizza (fig, prosciutto) and the broccoli rabe. Then we ordered pastas (gnocchi, rigatoni allá Bolognese, the special with shaved truffles) and both the eggplant and the chicken parmigiana. Top this off with some great cocktails and a bottle of wine, a tiramisu and a lemon almond cake and we rolled out of there with full bellies and a few doggie bags! Highly recommend.

San Matteo is one of the most authentic Italian restaurants in the city. Ciro and Alessia come from Salerno and share a passion for bringing the most intimate culinary tradition right to your table. They and their staff are welcoming, inviting and cheerful. There is so much to try, do not try to do it all in one sitting, but make San Matteo a regular on your dining out list, so you can enjoy their incredible plates over time. Complimenti a tutti!!

First time. Sunday noon family lunch. Had early dinner in July at San Matteo 10 blocks North on 91st and 2nd Ave. Thoroughly enjoyed both places for freshly made pizza, pasta, calzones, desserts. Simple rooms which can become crowded. On our list for excellent individual pizzas which serve one to two people.

The pizza is excellent. Each person ordered a different type and we were all satisfied. However, don't miss the appetizers and other dishes. They're just as good.

A friend who lived in Milan for nearly ten years told me San Matteo makes his favorite pizza in New York City. Having lived here since I was 18 (other than seven years), I was shocked I'd never been. I corrected that earlier this year, and I will forever be grateful to my friend for making me aware of this restaurant. Because, yes and of course, it's about the food. It's also about the exceptional staff in the kitchen and in table service. From Camilla, who greeted my friend and me on 8/6/23, to Ricardo who makes a cappuccino that would make the most seasoned barista return to training, to the staff responsible for making some of the best pizza (and meatballs and arancini and on and on) definitely in the five boroughs and likely in the United States. Everyone who works at San Matteo at E. 81st Street and 2nd Avenue provides reasons to tip in cash. About the food: you can tell when food is cooked with love, right? That's what you'll eat at San Matteo. The meatballs are generous in size, seasoning, texture, and presentation, with a sauce you'll want focaccia to mop up. The arancini make you grateful there are so many ways to cook with rice. The mixed greens salad comes with tiny tomatoes you're definitely not finding in the grocery store (or most of the farmers markets), and the Castelvetrano olives are included whole, which allows you to fully enjoy the best green olives ever, and it's easy to eat around the pit. Full disclosure: I've yet to eat pasta or sandwiches at San Matteo, so my opinions about main courses are limited to pizza. There's not a crust, saucing, topping application, texture, and overall satisfaction found and felt anywhere else in this New York City resident's lifetime. Whether you order Margarita, and recognize how fresh mozzarella and homemade sauce can distinguish, or Mariconda, which exemplifies Pecorino Romano in wonderful ways, or any other pie, you'll be thrilled. The wine list is short and thoughtful. Do. Not. Miss. San Matteo.

One the best authentic Neapolitan pizza in the entire NY. Service perfect, food amazing in every context. That must be the place for a pizza. (Italian guy)
