There is only one way to describe it: Classic Russia in the heart of New York.
The history of Russian Samovar starts well before the restaurant itself. Originally Jilly's Canteen, and owned by a friend of Frank Sinatra, Jilly Rizzo, Samovar was the go-to hot spot for Sinatra and The Rat Pack.
In 1986, Roman Kaplan, founder of Russian Samovar acquired the property and was joined in 1987 by friends and business partners: Legendary dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and Nobel Award Winning poet Joseph Brodsky. Baryshnikov's baby grand piano is still used daily by our performers and guests can still request the Brodsky table, where the legends used to sit and drink away the hours. Guests of private events also enjoy our private dining room, where Baryshnikov filmed Sex in the City.
Samovar has remained a celebrity hangout over the years. We've been lucky enough to feature impromptu shows by Liza Minelli and rumor has it that Mel Brooks adapted The Producers to film while sitting at our bar.

Great service. Really good food. The interior is a little “well-loved”, but I felt that added to its “rustic charm”. Will definitely be eating here again.

The appetizers are very large. For some elderly folks, like us, an appetizer is a delicious and filling dinner or lunch. The sour cream cake dessert is out of this world!

The Soviet standard was yummy. The shuba was excellent. The Russian bread is delicious. The beef stroganoff was outstanding! The Golubtzi was very good. The Cherry Vareniki was good but I wish it had more cherries and sour cream. We also had a flight of 6 shots. Our favorites were pepper and ginger. We also highly recommend their happy hour. Great drinks and apps at reasonable prices!

A fun place! Tasty menu, extremely generous portions. Very sharable. Go for the shuba appetizer - also known as herring in a fur coat! Interesting samovar collection. Live piano player. Cozy ambience.

The flight of infused vodkas -all were outstanding. My favorite was the horseradish-surprisingly smooth. Borscht was excellent and authentic. Loved the bowl of fresh sour cream for the table. We loved the braised , short ribs, and stroganoff. Cherry vernice were wonderful to end the evening. We have never been disappointed here after a show. So glad we had an early reservation because it got quite crowded. Excellent service!

Absolutely amazing experience. Food and drinks were incredible. They had a live piano player and singer, who serenaded our table after we left her a tip! If I ever come back to NYC I’m making a stop here again.

Visited on a busy Wednesday night. Hostess and wait staff seemed flustered and didn't have our table ready until about 15 minutes after our reservation time. Food was okay, but it had clearly sat in the kitchen for a bit, probably because of how busy everyone was. Food was reasonably priced, which offset the wait a bit. We ordered one cocktail each and would have ordered more, but our waiter never came back except to drop off the bill. We used coat check but ended up having to get our own coats because the hostess was gone. Overall, not a terribly memorable meal and probably wouldn't return. Not sure what I expected, but this wasn't it.

Wonderful food — and large portions. The Siberian Pelmeni was great. The beef stroganoff was perfectly seasoned. We will be back the next time we visit NYC.

A wonderful old school restaurant. Recommended dishes that we had were Beef Stroganoff and Short ribs. Borscht and Gribnoi (barley and mushroom) soups were hearty and delicious. Finished with Apple Streudel and Creme Brulee. Lovely dining experience.

This restaurant does not have the menus that are advertised on their website. There was a happy hour menu that was advertised as starting at 10 pm. When we were seated, we were given menus. We asked for the happy hour menu and the server had to “see if we were allowed to sit at the bar” because the happy hour menu was only good there. When we sat at the bar, we were told that menu was no longer available.

Very different experience than two nights earlier. Arrived for our reservation, no tables available. After waiting awhile, opted to just eat at the bar. Placed our order, my food came in about 10 minutes, wife's food about 30-40 minutes later, only after querying about her order, and then she was brought the wrong food. Waitress told her she didn't know how long she would have to wait for the right food so my wife graciously just ate what the server brought. Was a sad experience this time.

Great experience all the way around! The food was fantastic! Nice portion size and great price. Nice atmosphere inside with piano music playing live during dinner. Really enjoyed the whole experience. Will definitely visit again.
