We are at our heart a pub. This is a place where you can stop for a while, eat delicious food and drink in the atmosphere.

Set in the beautiful village of Grantchester, our picture perfect, thatch roofed pub is a 2 minute walk from The Grantchester Meadows and a lovely 40 minute stroll along The Cam from Cambridge.

We arrived on time at 7 pm but our starters did not arrive until 10 past eight the starters incidentally were lovely although they were only sourdough bread slightly warmed which was meant to be and a crumpet with mushrooms on top ,tasty better than it sounds but this did take over one hour and 10 minutes to prepare and arrive at our table the main course arrived another hour later and was okay I had the fish pie and it was just what it said on the tin my wife however commented that the stake was lovely the staff were nice but as I said just took so long to get the food and the gaps in between where excessively large although the venue was very quiet the manager did apologize for this and did remove the two mains items from the Bill as I said the people were nice the ambience is nice and the food was better than average just such a long time to wait it

Food is always lovely - only complaint I can give is they always ask how you want your steak cooked and regardless of what you say, it comes out well done. Other than that, everything was amazing!

Lovely welcome on arrival. The chap who looked after us was friendly and professional. Drinks order was promptly taken and brought to us. The area we were seated in was fairly quiet and relaxed. ( dog free area inside) I was hoping to see a ceaser salad on the lunchtime menu as it was a warm day but it wasn't so I chose the fish finger sandwich which was very dry and not the best thing I have eaten. I wouldn't order it again. My three friends seemed happy with their choices of food.

Service was slow ......but it was a bank holiday weekend, the restaurant was packed, the weather was very warm, so under these circumstances it was okay. Once we received the meals, it was worth it,delicious as always . Thankyou

Nice welcome at the bar. Good selection of drinks. Shown to our table by a very rushed member of staff who also rushed through the menu choices and items not available. There were three or four dishes out of stock. Later we discovered a desert also out- two of us having chosen it. One guest was gluten free- no paper menu with this detail available. Another guest had to access website on phone for further information- which then needed extra explanation from staff. We laughed but actually this feels excluding. Food passed across us rather than brought round to us. Fingers in dishes as they were passed to us. Generally lack of care in the details- although polite and asking the right questions. Food ok nothing spectacular so felt a little expensive but I guess that reflects inflation costs. Also just realised there was a dog in the restaurant area- didn’t cause concern but the table was listed as dog free area?

The food was poor and very expensive. I’m was very disappointed with the standard of food as what was described on the menu sounded very interesting yet it did not deliver at all - it was bland and tasteless. The raspberry tiramisu did not taste fresh. Overall a poor experience

Yesterday it was chaotic; had booked table but sent round the houses queue of those who’d booked and those who hadn’t. No space in car park. Annoying if you’re busy and wasting time.

Really fantastic Sunday roast! Proper yummy food and sticky toffee pudding was a hit too. Only drawback was we had to wait 20 minutes for our table, even though we had booked way in advance. It is great to see the pub booming and doing very well, but not so great when you are hungry

Hadn't been to the Red Lion for ages and was pleasantly surprised. Ambience and table service (from Chelsea) was brilliant as was the food. Parking was close and easy. Best of all we could select a dog friendly table and have our dog sat along with us. There were other dog owners on adjacent tables so we felt absolutely comfortable. I like the fact that you can choose a dog friendly table - or not if that isn't your thing. I took my wife here on our first date over 30 years ago - much has changed since then but I'm pleased to say that The Red Lion has retained its charm and it made for a nice memory and a splendid meal. Thank you!

Having booked in the Dining Room we were seated outside of it in what looks to usually be a hall area. Our three tables were of different heights and were very wobbly. The service was very slow, with long waits between ordering courses and their arrival. We did not receive any apology for the delay each time. While we were not in a rush keeping a three year old repeatedly waiting was frustrating. Past experiences were much better

Overall I felt the food was disappointing. 3 meals came out over done and we were never asked how our meal was. If we were in a smaller group, I would of sent the food back.

We have been to the Red Lion many times . This time we were not overly impressed with the food. My friend’s fish was overcooked and my chicken rather unimpressive. My pavlova was not as good as some I have had. Rather disappointing

Used to be a great pub but the food, both the menu and quality, and the service were really poor and dissapointing this time. We were told upon arrival that the pies and club sandwich weren't available, then upon enquiry to consult the app for Gluten Free choices and they couldn't guarantee anything else would be allergy free. When we ordered the lady behind the bar seemed really grumpy and despite ordering medium rare steaks for two, both came out well done, the croque monsieur was 'disgusting' but at least the steak sandwich was cooked to the right order. A shame as used to be cracking but we're very unlikely to go there for food again.

The ambiance and decor of the pub was lovely, very cosy and busy (which is normally a good sign) but unfortunately we were quite disappointed with our Easter Sunday Roast. Our table was booked for 17:00. We were done with our meal and on the road home by 17:30, which was incredibly fast service and makes us sceptical about the freshness of our food. Our food arrived before our 2 glasses of wine which did not sit right with us. For the price we paid (£20+) for each main, the food was not what we hoped. Both meats were over cooked & the vegetables were quite poor - the potatoes were not crispy, they seemed more boiled & the cabbage was tasteless. However the carrots were seasoned well and Yorkshire puddings were a good size. The gravy was very watery and did not have any flavour at all. My partner ordered the roast lamb was £24 as a ‘special’ but it was accompanied by the same subpar vegetables as my beef & was overcooked. Any additional ‘special’ vegetables/sides were extras and cost £5-£6+ which was a shame. Also charged £9.10 for a small glass of white wine (175ml) which I thought was quite steep. The staff were all very smiling & we appreciate Easter Sunday is always busy but the food really was not worth the cost.

The chips were out of a frozen packet not very good. No Meat as they had run out of steaks, also no English tea. apart from that ok.

I was very disappointed with the gluten free options, 2 of the 4 weren’t available on the night we were there. I ended up paying for a very over priced steak. It was advertised with beef dripping chips…..they most definitely weren’t! The chips were dry and tasteless. My friend had fish and chips which again she felt were over priced and uninspiring. There was no atmosphere at the venue and it was cold, despite being on a table next to the fire, it wasn’t lit. Overall I felt this was a very mediocre over priced meal out and wouldn’t recommend unless you can’t find anywhere else to eat.

Came for Mother’s Day. Asked for quiet table as one of party is hard of hearing and very pleased to be seated in table by bay window which was nice and quiet, which we really appreciated particularly as it was very busy. Served by Kirsten who deserves a special mention. She was lovely, super friendly and very helpful as always. We’ve been various times before and she’s always very attentive and helpful and makes dining at the Red Lion a pleasure. Food was delicious and a reasonable price and good choice for vegetarians which is great. Kevin was very friendly and helpful too and the man who greeted us on arrival as well. Overall it’s one of our favourite places to meet up and the service is always a cut above. Thank you to everyone at the Red Lion - Clare Mills

This was our first visit and we were very happy. The girl working our section was on her own and had to work hard to keep the tables served and cleared. The fish dishes were slightly cool and I suspect they had sat for a while but overall we rated the experience as good.

Unfortunately the restrooms were in complete disarray and the smell from the restrooms near our table were so bad they distracted from our whole meal. Fun venue , nice server, fine food.

Love the ambiance of this place. It’s cosy, warm and inviting. It’s a busy pub for a reason ! The car park needs to be double the size due to its popularity!

The food was okay but I ordered the steak sandwich. It came with a large amount of mustard mayonnaise which I am allergic to. I think this should be part of the description of the dish. The woman was great she gave me a new roll so I could transfer the beef but the salad was coated in the mayonnaise. Also the fries were stone cold so inedible. Disappointed

Have been twice in November and great. Good friends joined us from Sevenoaks .Service erratic. Long waits. The Risotto was nothing of the sort as was the limp tender stem broccoli Caesar Salad. Sorry Red Lion . Have visited since 1979.

Valentine’s Day was also our 54th wedding anniversary so it was a special day for us. A meal that was so well presented made us feel very special. We didn’t mention it was our anniversary but how we were looked after made us feel very good. Thankyou

The service was outstanding and well timed. The waitress knew about each dish and was able to answer questions. Food was well presented, tasty and the portion size was just right. We would definitely return…..in fact we are! With friends.

This was our second visit - on both occasions the staff were lovely, we were made very welcome and so was our dog. Delicious food and I'm sure we will be back again
