Inspiration for Primo comes from the love for food, ancient spirits, local crafts and rustic cooking. Trying to recreate in a small outdoor space under a beautiful tree, the essence from original Playa del Carmen and bring an authentic Mexican food where everything is cooked with wood fire, underground oven, comales and grill, as has been done traditionally in most Mexican small towns for centuries. Primo means cousin in spanish, as a common slogan in Mexico we say Primo to refer to really close friends, the ones that may be closer than family. Our intention with this name is that guests feel the confort of gathering in a place that will taste and feel like home as we do. We have developed the interior design with locally made tzalam wood furniture, bejuco lamps and a chukum finish for the walls. We pride ourselves of using local and sustainable suppliers for most of our ingredients.

This is one of the better restaurants in PDC. Charlie and his staff go out of their way to make sure you have an enjoyable experience. The Smokey Mezcal margaritas are the best!

It was our second time at Primo and yet again it did not disappoint. Excellent service. Incredible authentic food with unique flavors. And cocktails that are well crafted and not too sweet. The kitchen is open and we love watching and smelling them cooking.

Best food and best food experience from the best staff ever. Charlie and the fellas did a great job hosting my impromptu wedding group. We will stop by every time we are in Playa.

I literally almost cried. Twice. Unbelievable experience. The food was outstanding , the staff was attentive and knowledgeable. A friend told me to eat here first thing upon arrival and make it be my last meal before returning home. I should have listened. Definitely visiting Playa Del Carmen again, specifically for this restaurant. Do yourself a favor. GO!

Un concepto original, honesto y de calidad. Vale la pena comer aquí y pasar un rato muy agradable, el servicio es esmerado a pesar que las instalaciones no son las mejores de acuerdo a su precio, pero pasa a segundo término. Un buenazo.

I got a recommendation to go here from a beautiful woman in the pool at my hotel and I decided to give it a try. Food: Excellent! I started with the aguachile - pleasantly spicy and refreshing at the same time. My dinner companion had the margarita and commented that it was very good. I stuck with sparkling water. For main, I had the brisket and my companion had the lamb. Both elicited the sounds of delight upon first bites. Served with a plate of corn tortillas in a warming pouch (great idea, even in this heat) and diced onion, serrano, et al taco fixings, we were able to assemble as many tacos as we wanted and dress them to our liking. It was fancier version of street tacos that you could build your own way. I liked it. We skipped dessert because we had already eaten plenty. Service: the waiter spoke very good English and was able to guide us through entree selection. He also made a breakfast spot recommendation while we were talking about options for the next day. Engaged with us enough, and not too much - perfect level of attentiveness. I would definitely recommend this place if you're in Playa del Carmen!

Great little al fresco restaurant located just off the main street. Very popular, so reservations are recommended. Friendly service, authentic Mexican food, top quality. For starters we shared the tuna ceviche and guacamole, followed by the lamb barbacoa and pork belly. Dessert was warm chocolate cake with caramel ice cream. Everything was so delicious. Highly recommended!

Excellent food, all done with a great Smokey flavour (presumably from the Giant Green Egg barbecue set). Our waiter was super helpful in recommending dishes and showing us how to best combine the flavours. The charred cauliflower with hummus was a real surprise as I tend to think of cauliflower as pretty boring but this was delicious! Great street side venue. Highly recommend and do ask you waiter for recommendations

Service was very slow. We were ready to pay for a meal and then a young couple who knew everyone showed up. All attention was paid to them as we sat next to them with our check in the air ready to pay. No response. The meal was ok. Overpriced.

Primo is one of the best restaurants in Playa del Carmen. The food is always delicious, and the staff are always helpful and friendly. The dishes are inspired by traditional Mexican food, but elevated. The bar menu has some excellent mixology, but give the bartender a chance to surprise you and you won't be disappointed. I had an Old Fashioned using a house made bitters that consisted partially of some of the duck fat from one of their duck pibil dish. It was transcendent, and of course paired perfectly with the duck. It's one of our favorite spots in the city, and becomes a favorite with anyone we take there. Keep up the great work Primo!

Food is unique, very delicious, all of the staff members are enthusiastic about the food. Prices are great (compared with similar quality in USA). We have been 3 times, going back next week. We were told that all items are gluten free except for one. All beers are artisan.

Comida excelente, el concepto es muy bueno, pero hay un aspecto negativo; el tiempo de espera entre cada platillo es demasiado; comprendo que es parte de la experiencia, ver cómo preparan tu comida, el exquisito olor de las brasas, la variedad de ingredientes y la frescura de los mismos, pero si es un tanto frustrante esperar tanto, si pudieran mejorar ese aspecto sería excelente, la comida es estupenda, cuidando cada detalle, sabores bien equilibrados y gran presentación, muy recomendable pero hay que ir con paciencia.

We have been two weeks so far in Playa del Carmen and this has been so far the best place we have eaten so far! The food was much more superior compared to other often “premium” restaurants on the 5th Avenue. Everything we tried, from the aquachile, brisket, bone marrow, shrimp their special pork chop with a peanut sauce, could not find a fault. Fantastic ambience with an open fire kitchen, this is a must in Playa. Also the service was impecable and definetely listen to their reccomendations!!
