Chef Mathew Peters, the first American to win the prestigious Bocuse d'Or in 2017, is bringing his culinary expertise to the heart of Austin with the opening of Prelude, an elevated cocktail bar and lounge set in a historic home in West Austin.

Prelude will offer a unique Austin experience, combining innovative cocktail creations with elevated small bites. The menu will feature a curated selection of small plates, designed to complement the bar programs signature cocktails and highlight Chef Peters' culinary artistry.

Incredible, incredible, incredible. Service is top notch, a true sense of hospitality. I can’t believe this exists in Austin. We will hopefully be able to make this a regular spot!

The food and drinks are good. The outdoor space is still working out the kinks. We were seated on a sunny area with an umbrella but there weren’t any fans and the first available fan was given to a couple in a mostly shaded area. The music was French rap that was way too loud. One tables umbrella fell over so it couldn’t be tilted to actually block the sun. Needs more shade and more misting fans!

Prélude has unique, tasty cocktails. The canapés they offer also combine a wide range of flavors in small bites. There were four of us and we sampled six of the cocktails and four of the canapés. It was a flavor parade that we enjoyed. The atmosphere is trendy and chill. The music is a little louder than we like for conversation but most younger guests would likely be okay with it. Servers are friendly and take time to explain the food creations. There is some very interesting art on display (Dali, Berger) and a lot of unique pieces to look upon. Prices are on the higher end for Austin. Hopefully, they will find opportunities to have specials or a few lower priced items so that more people could experience. Overall, it’s a great way to spend two hours.

Drinks were inventive and phenomenal. Service was awesome. Eddy and Marta were killers behind that bar and personable as all get out. Can’t wait to come again!

I am sort of comparing this experience to one we had recently at Watertrade. Both have pretty stellar bar programs and very good food. The difference is we paid about the same amount for both experiences (4 drinks total at both places plus bites), but at Watertrade we had better value since there were more food choices and we had a lot more food for less cost. I know Prelude just opened and may still be finding its footing, but I want it to be successful. I hope Prelude will add more food options (especially more gluten free items) at a better price point. Maybe a happy hour? Valet parking would be nice (or something other than street parking)? Otherwise it will be a fun, one time experience for most. I look forward to trying Maven upstairs when it opens.
