Prairie Canary Restaurant & Bar serves comfort food with local flair in a historic building on Main Street in Grinnell, Iowa. Prairie Canary was opened in September 2012 and is currently owned by Chef, Paul Durr. Located in the city of Grinnell, also known as “The Jewel of the Prairie” and home to Grinnell College, Prairie Canary provides a gathering place where guests can enjoy Midwestern flavors in an inviting, understated atmosphere that speaks to the colors and textures of the Iowa prairie.
Prairie Canary Restaurant & Bar is all about being local. From the name of the restaurant to the dishes on which the food is served, effort was taken to showcase local talent and area producers. Enjoy your meal on hand-thrown plates and bowls. Sit at hand-made hickory tables. Savor farm-fresh produce grown just miles away. Sip on an Iowa wine or pint of beer. We look forward to seeing you!

The food was just okay - especially for the price. With tip, our order was $114. We were the first table in the door when they opened, but it took quite awhile to even get our drink order. The bartender came to our table to get our drink order, but when it was finally delivered only 1 of the drinks came, and the waiter had to ask what the other drink was. We have eaten at the Prairie Canary several times over the years, and have enjoyed it - but this time the food and service was off. We will have to decide if the price is worth going back.

Had great tomato/feta soup. Could have been a little warmer. The fried Brussels were amazing. Gluten free pasta with Vodka sauce was much enjoyed as was the rigatoni primavera. Apple salad was great. Final member of our group enjoyed bacon wrapped sirloin. Our server was great! We really enjoyed our experience.

My wife and I stopped for dinner after making a reservation through OpenTable. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the different choices. Cocktails were very good and dinner was outstanding.

Food was good, atmosphere was good…Obviously it’s a small place and it was NYE and super busy, but our reservation was at 8, we didn’t get seated until around 9.

A lot of great things about the restaurant but a hidden gem is the Speakeasy in the basement. Great atmosphere and wonderful cocktails, need to check it out.

Such a nice sit down restaurant in downtown Grinnell. We were able to make reservations online. We were seated within a few mins. So glad to see Prairie Canary busy and people enjoying themselves. Waitress was very attentive thru the evening. Was able to explain the nights specials. She was also able to share her experience with several of the entrees. Our table ordered 4 different entrees and all were delicious. I had the midwest porkchop. It was 2" thick. We really enjoyed the ambience and will be back again.

Cute place - best in Grinnell. Love the atmosphere though a little loud. Pastas were good as were the truffle fries and the artichoke dip but the sous vide chop was almost inedible. Great hangout with uneven food.

We split an order of Vodka pasta to start and it was good. For entrees, my wife ordered the Iowa pork chop and I the bacon wrapped sirloin. We waited nearly an hour from the serving of our first course to get our entrees. My wife's chop was flavorful, but overcooked, she finally asked for steak knives, which should have accompanied our orders. My steak was tough and I suspect it was actually bottom round they were grinding for their hamburger. Moreover, the bacon was burned on one side of the steak and nearly raw on the other side. And I ordered the "loaded" baked potato (a $2 upcharge) and received a lukewarm, very small spud with some crumbled bacon and a hint of cheese, no butter, no sour cream, no chives! The bottom line, this is a small town diner that probably serves decent burgers. If you go expecting more, you will likely be disappointed!

The service was slow. The food was disappointing one steak was tough the other one was cold, the baked potatoes were cold and under cooked . The asparagus was bland and overcooked. We also ordered the salmon in parchment, it was over cooked and bland as well.
