Located within the National Portrait Gallery, Portrait Cafe is the perfect location to rest and rejuvenate in between exploring some of Australia's most renowned artwork. This beautiful light-filled space with an expansive terrace, offers a casual dining experience in a relaxed environment serving a selection of dishes suitable for all-day dining. The food is fresh, homemade where possible and features seasonal produce from local community-focused producers. There is a broad selection of home-baked pastries, cakes, snacks, freshly made salads and sandwiches complemented by a selection of coffee, soft drinks, wine and beer.

Very prompt & efficient service. Coffee was good. We arrived earlier than appointed time, was not a problem

A nice friendly place to brunch on a Sunday morning. Beautiful outlook over the lawns, food is fresh & staff pleasant.

On our recent visit to Canberra I chose to visit the Portrait Gallery on Saturday morning and booked a table for two on the terrace. We were rewarded with a beautiful view and good selection of food from the menu which catered for different dietary needs. The service was excellent and our coffee and hot chocolate followed by the Poke Bowl and Poached eggs and ham with hollandaise sauce exceeded our expectations.

The roasted cauliflower salad was soggy, boiled cauliflower. The waiter bought our three meals with significant gaps between, wine arrived a long time later and was the wrong thing. My husband reported his burger was tepid at best and bland. Overall, disappointing.

We had a lovely lunch at the cafe. The food was fresh and tasty and served quickly. Such a nice spot to meet friends.

Pumpkin n goats cheese tart with salad was lovely though a bit more salad would have been appreciated. Would have appreciated all diners on our table receiving food at similar time. Didnt happen. Having booked a table for ten, thought bottles of water and some glasses on table would have been a nice touch.

This is always my preferred spot for coffee and light lunch when in Canberra. Great service, excellent coffee and tasty, well priced food..and wine! Always reserve a table!!

My friends and I enjoyed a lovely early Christmas lunch at Portrait Cafe on the terrace, which has a beautiful vista of national icons such as the High Court of Australia building, the National Gallery of Australia and Lake Burley Griffin . The food and drinks were really delicious, nicely presented, and arrived quickly. Having to line up to order is not that great but the line moved quickly. Being able to book a table on line is definitely a plus, as the cafe is very popular. The staff were excellent and very professional. This cafe is highly recommended!

The food used to be really good - this time not so much. I had the noodle dish which was heavy on noodles and very light on anything else. Poached chicken (described on menu) was grilled. Disappointed. My partners toasted sandwich came way ahead of the other meals and didn't look appetising - over grilled. Shame - always loved this Cafe.

Although booking was email confirmed, there was no reservation when I arrived. When questioned of wait staff I was told to speak to management. The manager advised that no booking had been made until I showed him the confirmation. He then advised that a table had been booked but had been just taken by someone else and there was nothing they could do about it. Luckily, I sourced a spare table by myself with no assistance from management but was not impressed.
