Pausa, a bar and cookery in San Mateo, calls for guests to take a recess from life and enjoy a dining experience that transports them to a place of leisure. With a strong focus on modern Italian, our menu will consist of house-made pasta, wood-fired pizza, wood-fired grill, and house-cured meats. Our friendly and knowledgeable team will ensure your pause is a memorable one.

We are now taking reservations for our patio tables, bar, and indoor tables. As we practice social distancing with our new limited floor plan, we ask that you and your guests limit your dining to 2 hours to accommodate all reservations.

When checking table availability, if outdoor seating is not an option to select, then your reservation will be for an indoor table as the outdoor may be booked.

    Been here multiple times, some times just for spritz hour at the bar and other times for table seated dinners. Always a great experience, from the service staff as well as the delicious and freshly rotating menu selections.

    We have eaten at Pausa multiple times. This night we had the Spring Pea Salad, Halibut Cheeks, and Tuminia Malloreddus. We found all three items to be tasty but very over salted. This was a surprise as this has not been an issue before. The service was excellent as usual.

    Pausa’s modern and innovative approaches to Italian food challenges the palate with every visit and this time was no exception. Perceptions of having so many ingredients on a plate being possibly messy are completelt dispelled upon eating, and pairing with really good Italian wines. Brilliant and masterful use of seasonal ingredients and playing with various textures and aromas. Top notch personable service every time on top that improve the customer experience. Been coming here for the past 7 years since they’ve opened, and always improving with surprises every time. Desserts are always top notch and worth the splurge. The attention to detail here is commendable every time!

    This was our second time at Pausa. The first time was so good that we looked forward to returning. However, we were not wowed this time. The service and ambiance were top-notch, but the food was bland and not exciting. The portion of burrata was small and not worth the price. Our main course pastas were good portions but because they were not very flavorful, no one cleaned their plates. Maybe it was an off night.

    We felt like we received unfair treatment. It was our anniversary, and our waiter brought complimentary champagne for the couple next to us while we received nothing. Not even a dessert menu. Super disappointing considering how much research went into choosing this restaurant. I expected more.

    Great wonderful food and service. The charcuteries were delish and the personalized service was top notch. Energetic and staff just flowed to help each other. Great wine list

    Amazing food (especially the baby romaine salad), friendly service, great drinks. One of the best restaurants in downtown San Mateo.
