Went out with daughter and a friend for afternoon drinks Lovely food with quick service. Staff lovely and attentive. Would definitely go back

Thus is the second time that both my wife and I have visited the Municipal Hotel. Where i to be reviewing the first occasion here then I would be giving a five-star review. The service at that time was impeccable, and it was on that basis that we made a booking for ourselves and four family members that were travelling up from Plymouth. Beforehand we were waxing lyrical about the place. What an incredible disappointment it was then when we visited on this second occasion last Saturday afternoon. We were shown to our seats without issue, however, despite the fact that the bar was far from busy we then waited 15 minutes before a waiter came to take our order for drinks. We then waited a further 15 minutes before the drinks arrived, and when they did one of the drinks was missing. In any other circumstances this would be a reasonable mistake to make but the waiter did not then take responsibility for the error in so much as I personally had to go to the bar about another 15 minutes later to enquire after the missing drink, and then find the waiter to confirm that it would arrive without further delay. When the drink did arrive we were informed that they would not run a tab and have to pay for our drinks immediately. First of all we are all approaching our sixties and unlikely to be seen as they sort of people that might do 'a runner' added to which when the bill did arrive it still included the service charge despite the delays we had encountered. One might have though common sense would prevail and that the service charge would have been removed at source before the bill was presented, (I should add that I did in fact pay the service charge but in hindsight can't imagine why!). Suffice to say we had planned to spend an enjoyable 2 hours at the Municipal but left immediately after our first drink. It was the hotel's loss, but also very much ours as we had built the venue up to be something special to our family beforehand. What a let down!

Great time with friends but service was poor. Couldn’t order drinks at the bar and constantly had to ask for staff to come and take orders

Thought we had booked a table to sit and have a meal. Was told on arrival this was not the case as apparently the restaurant inside has to be booked differently! All 7 of us had to sit round a coffe table and eat a meal which was just bedlam. We had a 70 yr old with us who was in a cast and it was just not a great experience. The food was good everyone enjoyed that at least.

Wonderful atmosphere and surroundings. Relaxed as well as tastefully decorated. Lots to see and steeped in history. Good menu of food and drinks, some slightly pricer than 'normal' but great as an one off, cocktails especially, or a reason for a treat. Food was lovely but the menu is slim. Well worth a visit, my visit was a treat with my cousin. We spent several hours there chatting, watching, people coming and going, people watching. If you like sitting and people watching there's alot as people go through to the hotel, possibly a down side for some, not for us! Also, seeing people's faces as they walk in and see the surroundings is great! We were left a little too long at times and had to flag a server but there was no rush and we were happy out of the rain too!

Didn't eat here. Birthday drinks, the bar is beautiful and service from our waiter Alex was outstanding.

Bar menu- some meals were not available one of which was a basic club sandwich. Chef had not made waitress aware of unavailability so she was having to go back and forth to see what was available. The food we eventually had was lovely but chef needs to communicate with front of house staff as it was embarrassing for them.

Tasty bar snacks - but portions small for the price. Very pleasant staff but we had to wait a while for our drinks.

The biggest disappointment was the food. We had the small plates and food the quality of food very average if not less given the prices. I wouldn’t recommend or return to eat here, as I think people would expect a lot more.

Second visit, my first visit was 6 months ago and very disappointing so we decided to give it another go, still a disappointment. Food in the restaurant was odd, I think you are trying to be too fancy. I had cod which tasted of bacon (pancetta) when I wanted the cod to taste like fish!! My friend had leek risotto which was disappointing and mushy. Definitely won’t be returning.

The Palm Court has wow factor and layout is good with cosy sofas in the lounge area and tables in the centre. However service was very haphazard and certainly not what I’d expect from 4/5 star hotel. We ate in the Bistro and all of us were disappointed with the food which was either lukewarm, soggy or undercooked. No one came to ask if the food was ok and we couldn’t attract attention. Would go back for a drink but certainly not to have a meal. Maybe the restaurant is better.
