Growing up in Italy, my family cooked at home and had the most extraordinary experiences with ingredients grown in our backyard, paired with the wines my chef/restaurateur stepfather would bring back from regions throughout Italy. I fell in love with food as a child watching my stepfather, once nominated a top chef in Italy, work in restaurant kitchens and floors. Moving to California in 1991 and subsequently to Santa Monica and experiencing the Farmers Market inspired me to start Orto - Italian for “vegetable garden” - where I meld local ingredients and organic herbs grown here at the restaurant to create traditional Italian recipes. At our bar you’ll find a cocktail list created from fresh herbs and premium spirits, and our wine list focuses on sustainable and organic producers.
You’ll often find my wife and kids in the restaurant, continuing the culinary legacy of our Italian family. We welcome you with open arms and hope you’ll join us to experience our restaurant.

We arrived for our 7:00pm reservations are were seated right away. The waiters / servers were all very attentive, and had engaging personalities. The reason for my less than stellar review was because I was VERY UNDERWHELMED by the food, especially for the price. There were 4 people in our party and we all had the specials on the menu. 2 people had the Bone in Veal Parmesan, 1 had the Dover Sole and 1 had the Pasta special. None of the dishes were as discribed. The Veal Parmesan was discribed to have a "Fresh Tomato" sauce and it seemed to have a heavy, almost creamy tomato sauce.....not what we were looking for. The Dover Sole was described to have a Lemony Dill sauce and it had a "Lemon" sauce with a wilted piece of Dill on the plate which seemed like an after thought and not incorporated into the dish. 3 of the 4 people had 1 cocktail before dinner and each couple split a dessert. The meal ended up costing $600(including tip) which is outrageous for the meal we had. Good service only goes so far. We went to Orto for the meal and that's what we were really paying for. We expect to have great service when you go to a restaurant. I wouldn't go back, sorry....

We were there during a slow period and were the only people there. Servers were excellent and had great conversations with us. They knew we were driving up the coast and gave us some recommendations of places to eat at when we arrive in San Fransisco. Excited to try them! Food was stellar. Drinks were excellent. Would 100% go back when we are in the area.

I hosted brunch for 4 moms (including my own) on Mother's Day. A super limited 4-course prix fixe menu, a couple more options would have been nice. But that said, it was wonderful. The food, the service, the ambiance. Price was steep ($95 person + drinks + mandatory 20% tip) so you can imagine how great it had to be to be worth it -- and it was!

The food at Orto is excellent. Our waiter spoke highly of both the scallopini and the pesto and both were very very good. The insalata carciofi was less so, and I would not order it again. The service was attentive and friendly, though we were a little bit forgotten at times. There were two large parties, one upstairs with us, and the waiters were very busy. But they did their best. Although the upstairs feels a bit isolated, the restaurant is very noisy, and I have a feeling the downstairs is about twice as noisy as the upstairs. So maybe upstairs is preferable; assuming you want to have a conversation. This is absolutely one of the better restaurants in the area and I highly recommend it.
