Growing up in Italy, my family cooked at home and had the most extraordinary experiences with ingredients grown in our backyard, paired with the wines my chef/restaurateur stepfather would bring back from regions throughout Italy. I fell in love with food as a child watching my stepfather, once nominated a top chef in Italy, work in restaurant kitchens and floors. Moving to California in 1991 and subsequently to Santa Monica and experiencing the Farmers Market inspired me to start Orto - Italian for “vegetable garden” - where I meld local ingredients and organic herbs grown here at the restaurant to create traditional Italian recipes. At our bar you’ll find a cocktail list created from fresh herbs and premium spirits, and our wine list focuses on sustainable and organic producers.
You’ll often find my wife and kids in the restaurant, continuing the culinary legacy of our Italian family. We welcome you with open arms and hope you’ll join us to experience our restaurant.

We were there during a slow period and were the only people there. Servers were excellent and had great conversations with us. They knew we were driving up the coast and gave us some recommendations of places to eat at when we arrive in San Fransisco. Excited to try them! Food was stellar. Drinks were excellent. Would 100% go back when we are in the area.

I hosted brunch for 4 moms (including my own) on Mother's Day. A super limited 4-course prix fixe menu, a couple more options would have been nice. But that said, it was wonderful. The food, the service, the ambiance. Price was steep ($95 person + drinks + mandatory 20% tip) so you can imagine how great it had to be to be worth it -- and it was!

The food at Orto is excellent. Our waiter spoke highly of both the scallopini and the pesto and both were very very good. The insalata carciofi was less so, and I would not order it again. The service was attentive and friendly, though we were a little bit forgotten at times. There were two large parties, one upstairs with us, and the waiters were very busy. But they did their best. Although the upstairs feels a bit isolated, the restaurant is very noisy, and I have a feeling the downstairs is about twice as noisy as the upstairs. So maybe upstairs is preferable; assuming you want to have a conversation. This is absolutely one of the better restaurants in the area and I highly recommend it.

Took a friend there for her birthday. Was an excellent experience. We are two women in our 80’s and were treated beautifully. The food was excellent - especially the mushroom truffle appetizer and the decadent dessert, vanilla gelato with fresh strawberries, chocolate shell and hot caramel. The dessert cocktails were also special.

Honestly great food. The sauce makes the pasta and they have some amazing sauces! Just delicious! The vodka sauce was amazing! Would definitely go back.

This was a great dinner for us . Food was excellent, service great. If you get a chance to try the table side prepared truffle tagliatelle it’s amazing. Will definitely come back if we come back to Santa Monica!!👍
