The North Wing restaurant at Downham Hall is our culinary delight set in our historic building in the glorious Essex countryside. We are proud to operate from breakfast to dinner and offer afternoon teas alongside our fine dining experiences. We aim to be that special place to come to, have an evening out, a lovely lunch or a special breakfast.

Family friendly but also special for those romantic and group dining events. Using the best of the local ingredients at our disposal, some even grown ourselves and looking to be something a little special in the area we hope to become a local favourite.

We are a small hotel so can offer private dining, work as a restaurant with rooms and even to support your corporate days as required. We love to show you around, help you relax and get the country air in your lungs.

The North Wing is our very favourite restaurant. Every time we visit we are made so welcome and the food is so delicious. The tasting menu by chef Anthony this time was just perfect. He lets the flavour of the food shine through so there is no overpowering salt or black pepper taste.

What a lovely venue, we went for breakfast, and was really well looked after, the food was excellent and the grounds were amazing, I would definitely recommend this place and will be returning very soon.

Had a set menu £45pp which was reasonable but then paid £12 for 2 bottles of water! The service was ok, no stand out customer service for the serving of the meal, also food: starter was very good, high quality and mezze was explained, very nice waiter. The other courses were just ‘“lamb’ and the plate was put down! My lamb had no accompanying veg or potatoes. Just one small ‘something’ wrapped in a wafer thin courgette! So I felt I was just eating meat! Also one cutlet of lamb was so fatty and hard to cut I couldn’t eat it. Desert was a pie which was very dry. All in all I wouldn’t return, for £150, we had 1 alcoholic drink each, and I felt it was poor value. The front of house staff were very good, they should train the waiting staff to be the same.

The venue is absolutely stunning and staff very friendly. The food is unbelievably good and worth every penny, we will definitely be back very soon.

Solo visit Love breakfasts and saw this venue served them. Arrivedvto find I was the only customer, though to be fair a B&B customer came in later. The full English was good if not that exciting. Good quality sausages, slightly hard bacon. Good eggs and beans. Tomato needed a little seasoning. Orange juice ok Needed just a couple of small tweaks to make it perfect. Slight crease residue on plate

Met with my girlfriends for my birthday breakfast - booking was easy, Downham Hall is really lovely setting, staff were very friendly and attentive, food was delicious; a great breakfast experience and very similary priced to any other local cafes - would recommend

Lovely Sunday lunch - a couple of comments - the beef was chewy and difficult to cut. My 88 year old dad needed a steak knife. The cheeseboard could have done with some chutney or grapes. Apart from that it's a beautiful venue, the staff are lovely and the Burnham honey cream with cherries was to die for!

A real hidden gem, this was our second visit and it was just as incredible as the first. Great food, great prices, great service, and wonderful surroundings. Highly recommended.

We were a party of six for afternoon tea. Even when I called the morning of the reservation and explained one of the party was vegan they were accommodating. The staff that served us were just lovely and I will recommend.

We had a wonderful end of term afternoon tea treat with our kids, 17 & 12. Had the place to ourselves but still great service and fabulous food. Catered well for vegetarians and tea choices were fab. Thanks so much for a great time - we will be back.

Sadly the starter & deserts were not great. The waitress was rushed off her feet. But lovely roast dinner. We would go back, but wasn’t its usual pleasurable meal

Pleasent venue with good parking, excellent afternoon tea, could do with Ceylon Tea but that's a personal preference. Very good staff who were most attentive. Good value for the money, fully recommend Downham Hall.

Disappointed had heard good things. One of us got our drinks then had to ask for the other after waiting some time. They had a private function on which seemed to take priority, didn’t feel festive which was a shame.

Lovely property, albeit a bit in the middle of nowhere. We had a wonderful welcome, full of human and heating warmth in the lovely reception. The dining room itself is a lovely airy and well-lit room. The food is very nice. A few rough edges but generally full of flavour and textures and generous portion sizes. Service was attentive and friendly, totally welcomed and very happy with interactions with the staff. Pricing is fair, perhaps not a bargain but reflecting the quality of food and service. We will be back.

Our third visit to Downham Hall restaurant. The food was very good and portion size generous. The room felt rather cool in temperature which for me did affect my dining experience. Given we are in the festive season the ambiance felt flat somehow which is a shame. The owners have clearly worked hard to develop their offering but just need that final touch for the detail.

The food and service were good. However, it was far from clear when booking that they restaurant only offers a brunch menu during the day. This was most disappointing and there was really only one suitable choice for us to have for lunch. This should be made much clearer on the website, but also on the booking site.

Visited The North Wing @ Downham Hall for their Festive Afternoon Tea with my Mum. Greeted at the door by attentive staff in a beautifully decorated reception area, where we were serenaded by a wonderful singer playing piano and adding to the festive ambience with Christmas carols. The food was amazing, as you always expect at the North Wing, but for me the star of the show was the Advocaat Lemon Possett. It is, hands down, my favourite festive desert ever! A gorgeous afternoon of sumptuous surroundings, fantastic service and divine Fayre. A true treat. Huge thank you to all at Downham Hall.
