The name refers to the ancient Mexican monarchy honouring the influence both his parents made on his culinary style. While his mother inspired our sister restaurant, Ophelia, the familial tradition has continued here at Monarca where you’ll find playful dishes and a lively atmosphere inspired by Chef Higareda’s father.

Francisco’s father lived near the famous Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in central Mexico’s Michoacán region. Chef Higareda spent several summers here with his family enjoying the local Tlahualiles (defeated warriors) Festival. The festival celebrates the feast of Santiago Apóstol, patron saint of Sahuayo. The battle depicted in the festival is still debated today in Mexico and refers to military conflicts before, during, and after the arrival of the Spanish. It’s a memory he cherishes from his childhood.

Food was delicious and would love to go back for the food. Drinks were delicious as well. The service was slow and they didn’t seem to be in a hurry to help us or ask if we need more drinks, etc, yet they told us they had a 2 hour table limit.

Food was amazing overall. When making my reservation I added a note to provide a small desert with a candle for a birthday surprise and the serve arranged it flawlessly. Great ambience and music

Had the best time celebrating my moms 50th! Thank you so much to our serve, I forget her name but I think she had an Irish accent, made the entire experience so lovely for my mom, very attentive to our group. Food and drinks were amazing, I especially loved the monarca margs and spicy pineapple one. Also just a great place for cocktails with the girls

Food was average. Great guacamole. Pork belly very small and somewhat overcooked. Fish tacos very good, lobster sauce a bit too rich and creamy. Really noisy

Food was good, with lots of options. Portions are substantial, and we might’ve ordered a bit too many appies to start. The Frijoles con Veneno are a tasty and spicy treat (maybe a bit too spicy for some!). They’re listed as a side but can easily be shared as an appetizer. The cocktails were pretty good too. The Feathered Snake Mezcal cocktail looked as pretty as it tasted! The spicy margaritas were also a hit.

everything was good, the food and drinks were great, very good happy hour. Service was great but our server removed all our napkins when we were still working on the drinks.

This was a disappointing visit considering this was on my list for friends and families to dine in. I had came here with out of town guests many times in the past. Unfortunately, the experience from the point of check in to dining was not great. Parking was an issue. Direction from 2 different hostesses were missing leading. Maria was a good server for our table. I had requested a quiet table but the table next to us was extremely loud and sounded like they were drunk for a birthday party. My guests and I were yelling at each other as we cannot hear due to the noise level. The food quality has gone down since my last visit. Steak was not medium rare. Pork belly was over cooked. Octopus was over cooked. This was a disappointing visit.

We were asked to leave after 2 hours. Our party wanted to stay for drinks and there were 3 open tables around us. We will probably not go back with a large party due to time restrictions. Service was very good but restaurant policy is not.

Awesome and perfect food we tired there. But the waiters forgot about us to give our orders and we called them for that after 15 minutes. But they very Polite . I love music and dj last night .

The place is good, the ambience is also good, but the service is not the best, they warned us that the schedule was for two hours and that we had to evacuate after the two hours even with a reservation. I didn’t like this behavior since the beginning.

Monarca disappoints with its excessive use of cheese, drowning out what should be authentic flavours. Every dish suffers from an overwhelming cheese overload. While the service remains commendable, the heavy-handed approach to cheese detracts from the overall experience.

The 2 hour reservation limit is tough because it doesn’t really allow for you to consider having dessert.. only complaint. Otherwise it’s a great dinner option.

Amazing food and a great way to celebrate my birthday! That said, it was clear that the restaurant front-of-house was definitely understaffed with 2 servers spread across 10+ tables while also greeting guests.. I felt for our server and he was doing the best he could given the circumstances. All that said, we did have to wait for quite a while to get our food and drink orders in. We tried the tuna tostadas, lobster enchiladas, and ribeye tacos. The food was fantastic!! We will definitely be back and hope that the staffing issues were just a one-off

Another great meal and experience at Monarca. Food is always delicious and good portions. Creative Mexican dishes that will make you coming back from more. The room is very inviting and the decor and art is exceptional.
