The name refers to the ancient Mexican monarchy honouring the influence both his parents made on his culinary style. While his mother inspired our sister restaurant, Ophelia, the familial tradition has continued here at Monarca where you’ll find playful dishes and a lively atmosphere inspired by Chef Higareda’s father.

Francisco’s father lived near the famous Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in central Mexico’s Michoacán region. Chef Higareda spent several summers here with his family enjoying the local Tlahualiles (defeated warriors) Festival. The festival celebrates the feast of Santiago Apóstol, patron saint of Sahuayo. The battle depicted in the festival is still debated today in Mexico and refers to military conflicts before, during, and after the arrival of the Spanish. It’s a memory he cherishes from his childhood.

food was excellent!!! service a little slow.... waited almost 1/2 hr for our wine. they also ran out of the 1st one we ordered. but very friendly service.

The noise struck me as soon as we entered it was excessively loud. We were served quickly but both food and drinks orders were wrong and we left before our second course was served as we waited so long for it.

Excellent location and ambiance. Seems to fill up a little later in the evening. I suggest 7:30 or 8:00 reservation. We were there at 7:00 and there was only 1 other couple so it felt kind of weird with the whole place empty. We left at 9:00 and it was filling up by then. Good food, excellent atmosphere. Service was good and our server was very knowledgable.

One of the most disappointing experiences I’ve had overall. The food was bland, the churros were hard and tasteless, the candles for my friend’s birthday were forgotten despite 3 reminders, dishes were left on the table for what seemed like forever, we were overall not attended to and it took us 2.5 hours to dine with just a few maincourses and dessert. Safe to say I’ll never be back

The portions of some food items have been reduced significantly. We would rather pay more than see a fraction of the serving portion that it used to be. The service was really excellent, but won’t be back due to the reduced portions.

Food was excellent, although maybe a little spicy for some service started out really good a little slow near the end but very friendly and wonderful staff would definitely go again

Food was delicious and would love to go back for the food. Drinks were delicious as well. The service was slow and they didn’t seem to be in a hurry to help us or ask if we need more drinks, etc, yet they told us they had a 2 hour table limit.

Food was amazing overall. When making my reservation I added a note to provide a small desert with a candle for a birthday surprise and the serve arranged it flawlessly. Great ambience and music
