Mertens Prime, named a Top 10 restaurant by Grand Rapids Magazine for 2 consecutive years, is a French brasserie and steakhouse set in a historic 1914-built former hotel lobby and dining room that preserves and celebrates Grand Rapids' past. We offer a variety of French classics along with an impressive French-touched steak menu, including Chateaubriand. The Mertens cocktail list is an exact replica of the drinks and menu design from the New Hotel Mertens bar, circa 1939, and includes the same 50 cocktails served in 1939 that are as relevant today as they were 80 years ago. Mertens also operates a Cafe adjacent to Prime. Cafe Mertens offers warm beignets & poutine every day and does not offer table service. The restaurant's rooftop cocktail lounge, Mertens Rooftop, is open seasonally and it is *not* possible to make a reservation for the Rooftop via Mertens Prime.

Service was terrible. Took us over 2 hours to get our appetizers. Everything we ordered was either bland, overcooked or both. We could’ve made food at home and we could’ve eaten better tasting food and paid less for it

For the price I was very dissatisfied. My steak was very overcooked and our server did not come back to check on us. I was unable to alert the kitchen as I was unwilling to sit there while my family ate and keep us longer waiting on a new steak. After dinner I asked my father how he liked his food and he said it wasn’t very hot so that was disappointing as well. Cocktails really saved dinner so I think I’ll stick to the rooftop bar and cheese cart

We waited for 2 hours to get our food restaurant wasn’t busy at all. Steaks were horrible and we left very hungry

We met an employee (not sure if they were a hostess) at the door and told her we had a reservation but were early. She had us wait for a moment then told us to follow her. She took us to a table and left. No other words. We sat there with no water and no acknowledgement for 35 minutes!! Other tables had the same thing happen and they got up and left. We were about to go when my husband grabbed someone walking by and asked if we were going to have a server. He said someone would be with us soon, got us some water and asked if we would like anything from the bar. I said I hadn’t seen a wine list but I’d like a Merlot. My husband ordered a cocktail. He asked us for our order. In the meantime, 55 minutes after we were seated, our actual server showed up with the cheese plate we ordered, which was good. I ordered the beet and chèvre salad and the cassoulet with pork osso bucco. My husband ordered French onion soup and the pork belly. The soup was very good. My salad was good. However, my main arrived and instead of osso bucco I was served confit duck legs. Because we were now in a time crunch I said I’d keep it even though it wasn’t what I ordered. It was awful. There was absolutely no seasoning on the duck and it was quite oily ( which was why I didn’t order duck.) The cassoulet was not really cassoulet. The beans were crunchy, not creamy, and had no flavor. I sent it back and asked to have it removed from the bill. My husband’s pork belly was well cooked but had no seasoning or sauce whatsoever and no accompaniment. The bill arrived and I discovered that my glass of mediocre Merlot was $21! We had a very disappointing meal, celebrating my birthday, no less, and had the privilege of paying $200 for it. The restaurant is for sale and, sadly, it shows. Perhaps new owners will improve the situation, but in the meantime, we would recommend people go elsewhere.

We walked in and waited to see a host for ten minutes. Once seated, we were quickly attended to and put our drink order in. Shortly after they moved us to a different section of the restaurant. We waited another half hour… no one brought our drinks, no one acknowledged us or filled waters. We looked around and noticed many other tables sitting with no food, no drinks, and empty water glasses. They seemed to have plenty of staff but service was the worst I’ve ever seen. We left shortly after. We’ve dined there in the past and it was not bad; will not be back, though.

Our server did a great job! The cheese cart and appetizers were very good. We ordered the large steak for the table to split and it came out medium well instead of medium rare. They fired up another steak and it was better but took another hour between ordering initially. The cherries jubilee flambéed tableside for dessert was fun!

If I could give Mertens Prime less than 1 star, I would. Our reservation was for 3 people at 6:00pm. & we waited 10-15 min. for our table. All 3 of us ordered simple meals, filets with salad & potato. I also ordered French onion soup. Our server moved like a sloth with no personality. I received my soup around 7:00pm. We asked for bread (it was not offered but our food was taking so long he did oblige).When we asked our waiter about our food at 7:35pm, he told us it was going to be about 15 min. Bottom line is, we finally left the restaurant at 7:40pm WITHOUT OUR MEAL!! We had tickets to see a show at 8:00pm & could not wait any longer. You can't make this stuff up. I understand restaurants have difficulty finding quality staff but this was beyond that.

Had reservations for our 5 year anniversary. Service was terrible. I can’t believe we had to pay almost $200 for such a bad meal. We will never be back. We waited an hour for our steaks and they tasted like they had sat under a heat lamp for an hour which they probably did. We’re going to order dessert…. But at that point we had been sitting on the uncomfortable hard wood chairs for so long we just wanted the check and get out of there. We got macaroons to go and when we got home to eat them they were literally the size of a quarter. We were not shocked by this as it just went in line with how the dinner had went. There was zero mention of our anniversary and overall we were extremely disappointed.

We love Mertens, but our visit this time was extremely disappointing. Service was slow (took about 20 minutes to get drinks). Food came out cold and husband medium rare steak came out medium. A second steak came out for my husband about 15 minutes later. Additionally, we ordered a bottle of wine to be served with dinner and the waiter brought it out after I reminded him. We were almost done with our meal. The bathrooms needed attending. Toilet wouldn’t flush and the toilet paper holder was broken. Tissue and towels were on the floor. We spent approximately $800.00 on this meal for 4 people. It was not worth it. And to top it all off, when we complained, it fell on deaf ears. There was no discount offered and few apologies.
