Mertens Prime, named a Top 10 restaurant by Grand Rapids Magazine for 2 consecutive years, is a French brasserie and steakhouse set in a historic 1914-built former hotel lobby and dining room that preserves and celebrates Grand Rapids' past. We offer a variety of French classics along with an impressive French-touched steak menu, including Chateaubriand. The Mertens cocktail list is an exact replica of the drinks and menu design from the New Hotel Mertens bar, circa 1939, and includes the same cocktails served in 1939 that are as relevant today as they were 80 years ago.


Mertens Rooftop offers a full bar and a menu of appetizers. To book a reservation at Mertens Rooftop, select "Outdoor Seating", if available.

    July 6th is the evening for the City of Grand Rapids fireworks show, but the 4th itself usually offers a great view of smaller fireworks displays around the city. Each reservation includes a complimentary cocktail from our Rooftop cocktail list or a complimentary soft drink. Guests may order more items at the venue per our usual menu pricing. Please consider the cost of your included items when processing your tip amount. Guests may arrive at any time after 8:30PM. The venue will close at 11:30PM. This event is non-refundable and is rain-or-shine.

    When we arrived there was nobody to help us figure out where to go. Doors were locked. We found people that were carting food around. It was strange they had loaves of bread just sitting on top of a cart- looked unsanitary. We made our way up and the waitress was very quiet and didn’t know much. Food wasn’t worth the prices and the drinks were very small. The only nice part was the weather and views. It was sort of disappointing.

    Dead on a Saturday night, and we understood why. Seems to want to place itself in an upscale/fine dining category (look at the prices), but the service, professionalism, and food were all incredibly subpar. Our server was friendly, but clearly not very well trained. The pork we ordered was tasty, but the "cassoulet" that came with it was almost nothing more than room temperature, undercooked beans. The fried brussel sprouts were supposed to have a honey balsamic glaze on them. They didn't. When we inquired, we were told they ran out of that (then why even make it? Also ran out of things like balsamic and honey?). I ordered a white negroni when we first arrived, which is featured on the front of the food menu. They couldn't find Lillet on the shelf. Finally, we went up to the rooftop with a reservation afterwards. After standing around for a moment, someone approached us and told us to pick any seat and he would be buy to clear it off (because all the tables had trash and plates on them). We chose one and then proceeded to wait for 15 minutes without anyone coming to clear off the table or take our order. I never write reviews, but this was just such an all around poor experience (e.g., the person in the front had airpods in the entire night). On the plus side, the bleu cheese from the cheese cart was yummy.

    Being on the roof top on a beautiful sunny day was the best part of the entire experience. Ordered a lemon drop martini and I have no idea what exactly they made. It was awful. Honestly the worst I’ve ever had. Sent it back for a vodka cranberry. That was much better but still not great. My husband ordered bourbon. That was fine he said. For such a nice an expensive restaurant a vodka cran in a plastic cup did not fit in. Definitely prefer a fancier glass— it’s part of the whole experience. Husband ordered steak bites. They weren’t bad, just a little overcooked but ok. I ordered the shrimp cocktail which was very good. But I was disappointed in only getting 4 shrimp. They were good size but for $18 I feel like 6 would’ve been more fair. The poor waiter had all the tables to serve which were around 12. It was not his fault but it did take a while. What we thought was absolutely ridiculous was that he had to go downstairs— to the main bar which is 8 floors down to get the bourbon. If it’s on the menu it should be upstairs. The wait was a bit much for the bourbon. $71 for the bill plus a $15 tip was so not worth it. We don’t mind paying a higher price when the food and the service is great. This was not. We felt unsatisfied and deflated after we left. I will say that we did eat in their main restaurant a couple of years ago and that was much better. I’m pretty certain we won’t be back.

    Beautiful, old-world atmosphere. The server was newish, but the food was outstanding. Just very homemade French selections here. Cassoulet was wonderfully flavored. The bananas foster was amazing. And I have to agree that the Rooftop for a drink after dinner is a show-stopper.

    Loved the steak frites-- it's a very marbled ribeye, so make sure you enjoy that kind of cut. But if you do, the flavor is truly outstanding. Desserts are awesome here too. And then we finished the night on the rooftop with a great view of Grand Rapids. This is a very unique venue. One of the best in GR.

    We arrived around 6pm on a Friday. The restaurant was pretty empty. We were greeted and seated quickly. After ordering drinks we ordered two appetizers the escargot and croquettes. Both were ok. The escargot was semi warm and served with overbaked bread making it hard an inedible. The croquettes were bland along with the sauces Next we're the entrees. A $69 ribeye over cooked and cold. A $40 steak and fries over cooked and the fries looked like something you could get at Coney Island and weren't very warm. We did not stay. We left and dined else why. Do not go here

    I read some of the previous reviews so we went in with low expectations. I am one of those people to give a place a chance to fix its mistakes. My wife and I eat out often and have dined in some really great places and I consider myself an amateur chef. We had a gift certificate from our son for a fair amount so we needed to use it. Our server Braydon was very good and attentive. He had a good sense of humor and was very pleasant. Our reservation was for 5:30, we were the 3rd and 4th customers. We left around 7 and I would say there were no more than 20 people in the restaurant. A couple came in and were seated next to us. I’m not sure what they ordered but they did not finish it and I’m not sure that they didn’t walk out. We started with drinks that were very good but we stuck with simple, my wife had a Tito’s and tonic and I had a manhattan. We ordered escargot and bone marrow as apps. The escargot was good but it could have been a bit more garlicky, but wasn’t bad. Where they missed was they served it with day old toasted bagget. They could have used a quick dash in the salamander perhaps. We have had bone marrow in many places, everyone does it different, however it has always been served with the femur bones cut lengthwise, here it was served as the whole bone, standing on the plate. It also had the day old “toast” and sauted onions with basalmic which was good but also the only flavoring, the marrow had no way to have been flavored. My marrow was yellow so I did not finish, my past experience, even at home has never been yellow. My wife had the pork chop, which was good but not super seasoned, and the Brussels sprouts which were very good. I had the cassoulet with osso bucco. It came with 2 large pork hocks (not shanks as most true osso) the key to true osso is to allow the marrow to cook into the veggies it’s cooked with. I did not see any opening in the hocks bones. It needed some flavor. We questioned the decor & cloth napkins, no tablecloths.

    Service was terrible. Took us over 2 hours to get our appetizers. Everything we ordered was either bland, overcooked or both. We could’ve made food at home and we could’ve eaten better tasting food and paid less for it

    For the price I was very dissatisfied. My steak was very overcooked and our server did not come back to check on us. I was unable to alert the kitchen as I was unwilling to sit there while my family ate and keep us longer waiting on a new steak. After dinner I asked my father how he liked his food and he said it wasn’t very hot so that was disappointing as well. Cocktails really saved dinner so I think I’ll stick to the rooftop bar and cheese cart

    We waited for 2 hours to get our food restaurant wasn’t busy at all. Steaks were horrible and we left very hungry
