Back after more than a two year closure following the George IV Bridge in late 2021, Merchants has undergone a full refurbishment. Merchants serves Scottish cuisine in one of the most bustling areas of Edinburgh. Braised shin of beef, haggis and seared seabass are some of the dishes on an ever-changing menu, and the restaurant is happy to try and cater for any specific dietary requirements. Situated at 17 Merchant Street, Merchants Restaurant is proud to use fresh, locally sourced produce in its dishes. Historic Edinburgh Castle is a nine-minute journey on foot and Greyfriars Kirkyard a mere two minutes walk.

Great dining experience. The food was excellent as was the service. A special mention to Logan who looked after us all evening, he was very attentive without being overbearing. The restaurant has been tastefully renovated and they are serving excellent food at a reasonable price in lovely surroundings with great young staff. We will definitely be visiting again.

Merchant’s Restaurant in Edinburgh is an absolute gem! The atmosphere here is just perfect. The staff go above and beyond to ensure every guest feels welcome and attended to, making the service standout. What a fantastic find for a celebratory dinner! I loved the interior and the thought put into all the details, from decor to presentation of dishes to the dishware itself! The food was just as fantastic for me as a vegetarian as my family of carnivores! Drinks were spot on and the staff friendly and attentive. Wish I lived here so I could come back often!!

This is a genuine hidden gem in Edinburgh. The restaurant is beautiful and the moment you walk in the staff are attentive and respectful. The atmosphere is lovely, really nice restaurant vibe without being stuffy at all. The food was incredible, each course exceeded expectations and the staff were able to advise to suit our tastes. I would highly recommend Merchants to all my friends, casual diners and foodies alike. They really have hit the nail on the head with this place. We will definitely be back next time we are in Edinburgh, thank you.

Amazing food in a great setting. Quality of the food was 5 star and prices were reasonable. The restaurant looks great after re-opening, nice buzz about it. I felt compelled to leave a top review, we will definitely be back!

Newly refurbished in an elegant yet down-to-earth style. The welcome was warm and service throughout the meal was exemplary. Each dish was carefully crafted, tasty and sympathetically cooked, bringing out great flavours and textures. We both loved the haggis spring roll, and my pork belly main was perfect. Ending with an exciting chocolate creme dessert, we couldn't have wished for a better meal. This place deserves to be packed but having just reopened, it will take some time to become popular. Reserve now while you can!

I can’t say enough about our experience at Merchants! My son and I went for a Mother’s Day dinner and it was outstanding. We tried the haggis bon bons, a salmon salad, and an excellent sea bass that was cooked to perfection. Everything was cooked to perfection! For dessert we had an apple crumble and a lemon posset which we devoured. The restaurant is intimate and charming with great ambiance. As for the staff, they made our experience exceptional! Logan was our waiter and was charming and attentive. Truly a wonderful experience all around. I cant recommend it enough!

Booked for my bday with my family, food was delicious or so well done, everyone of us were amazed by the food, but the real star of the night was the person who served us, big shoutout do Lizzie/Izzie ( so sorry i forgot ) but her service was amazing, she was the sweetest, so kind, i am definitely coming back at the Merchants on my next visit to Scotland.

Beautiful restaurant tucked away in old town lovely food. Only 4 stars as my beef could have been slightly more tender but clean plates from everyone! Starter of spring roll was gorgeous. It was quiet for a Friday night - has nobody else discovered this hidden gem?

Booked late on a festival weekend .Arrived not knowing what to expect other than what was on the website / forgive me for always being sceptical!!! Food was outstanding… boom !. had a group of drunk guys next to us and the restaurant really made sure that we were taken care of, didn't charge for drinks and asked if we wanted to change tables - really appreciate that!

New owners took over previous restaurant: stunning menu, well balanced and executed to perfection. We loved our dinner and the hosts were welcoming and we had a pleasant conversation. The ambiance is romantic and inviting, very chic and a lot of ate to details went into the restaurant. We totally recommend the restaurant!

We were heading to an Edinburgh Festival show and looking for a restaurant in town that we had not tried before. Merchants was our choice and we were not disappointed. From calling to say we were running late as Edinburgh traffic (sigh) was as problematic as always to paying for our food as we left the service was No1. The folks who attended our tables were just the right amount of attentive even as the place filled up. We eat in a lot of restaurants and I would say the staff get it. Then to the food. It was tasty, well presented and well priced for an old town restaurant. I had the beetroot salad, followed by parma ham wrapped chicken and strawberry compote. My partner had the terrine, beef shin and brownie both served with coffee. We will definitely be back and definitely recommend highly to all. I should say Covid rules were followed and we felt well looked after from sanitiser at the door to masks and cleaning.

Great find in the Old part of Edinburgh Only just reopened and been refurbished very well! Lovely service and atmosphere Food very tasty and brilliant to find some gluten free options. Waiter checked everything with chef who adapted some bits of my dishes which I throughly enjoyed Would highly recommend and definitely go back next time we visit Edinburgh.

We booked into Merchants on a whim, and we are so lucky we did. What a great restaurant, food was to die for. All of us thoroughly enjoyed the food. Service was excellent attentive but not overbearing. Great ambiance, lovely decor. Will definitely return when we are next in Edinburgh and would highly recommend.
