I have many memories of Espanol- birthdays, gatherings at the bar, etc. returned to find a friendly welcoming restaurant with a more upscale and pricier menu. Wait staff were knowledgable and attentive without being intrusive.

Very enjoyable dinner. Delicious lasagne and perfectly cooked lamb chops. We're not normally partial to parsnips, but my 12-year-old gobbled them up! They were amenable to the kids' request for alfredo even though it wasn't on the menu. Very pleasant ambiance and excellent service. Will definitely return.

Love Mattones!!! I have not had a single poor entree or drink. Soooo glad that they have ravioli entrees that change. This is a great local delicious restaurant

Always amazing food for as few as one at the bar, and anywhere from 2-25+ at tables. Great service. Great food. Large poured, tasty beverages! Owner is the nicest person and is always there to check on you or give you a hug!

We've been meaning to eat here ever since it opended. I wish we had done it sooner although there was a long wait ( due to table reassignments?) we enjoyed it very much, our wait person was helpfull and very friendly.

We loved Matones. Our Server was so nice and our drinks were wonderful! The service was perfect and the meal was incredible!!!

Mattone's is a gem. The lasagne is spectacular! Being vegan, they made me their house-made spaghetti with a wonderful tomato sauce. The wine selections were also great. We've had several of their pastas now and each one was exceptional. Staff is also always very knowledgeable and helpful. Just a lovely place for dinner.

Always a great dining experience. John makes fantastic cocktails and the wait staff are always eager to please. The presence of Jun, the owner, and his concern over your dining experience is special and appreciated.

We had been looking forward to this for months. So I’m brokenhearted to report that, for us, it was an epic fail: 1. First they tried to set us 2 women in the small back room with a table of 12 . No one else, just us. And them. Then they put us in the first table by the entrance (sigh); 2. The food? The Pomodori arrostiti con Mozzarella was made with canned tomatoes and the 12-layer lasagna was 12 layers of noodles (where was the cheese, the sauce, the meat?). And my wife? She leaned over her barely eaten plate of carbonara and said, “hey, let’s take this home and doctor it up.”

Mattone’s cocktails are top notch. Manhattan is best in Sacramento. Dirty martini was also very good. Calamari was nice and crisp, served really hot. Caesar salads refreshing. Lasagna is best in Sacramento and veal terrific. Not a fan of Brussel sprouts so she kindly traded out really good stubby carrots. All in all a great birthday dinner with our daughter.

Every dish ordered was the best! We started with the potato leek soup and the beet salad. I loved that they put more beets on the salad then you usually get at other restaurants. Then we had the Lasagne al Ragù di Carne, Spaghetti alla Carbonara, La Pasta Ripiena del Giorno and Pollo al Mattone. We shared two desserts: Lemon Cheesecake and Bourbon Pecan Crème Brûlée with candied pecans, pecan shortbread cookies--and they were yummy! Loved the shortbread cookies!!!

Again, fantastic food from the fried calamari to the lasagna and the ravioli of the day. The lemon cheesecake was excellent, as well. Great wine list, too. Only complaint is the noise level but the food is worth it.

Went before a school dance. Service was great. We had the ravioli and gnocchi. Both were excellent.

When we arrived at 6 for our reservation, I could hear the wait staff talking about how they were understaffed because an employee showed up for her shift a little late. We were seated and waited 30 minutes for a server to come ask if we needed drinks or were ready to place our order. It wasn’t until we asked a busser if a server would be coming to our table which one finally did. The service was lacking in. The beginning but once we started ordering, it picked up. The food is mediocre. A little on the bland side and pricey for what you get. The menu is pretty limited for entrees. I’m not sure if I would come back, as there are other Italian restaurants are better suited for my taste.

Highly disappointed with this birthday dinner for my wife. Food was terrible. The gnocchi of the day was unedible and was replaced with the ravioli after my Branzino with burnt skin on both sides and very little fish was almost finished and cold. Bread was cold, salads did not have ingredients listed on the menu. Steak bites were good but cold also. Best part of the dinner was the Duckhorn 2004 reserve cabernet which I brought and was decanted by our highly professional server. Rating for a special occasion birthday is a huge fail. I had to apologize for the bad experience and can not get the wasted time and money back. Brian Miller

Another fabulous dinner at Mattone's. As always, the lasagna was excellent and the veal cutlets were fantastic. The desserts (made in-house) were wonderful: gelato and crème brûlée. We will be back.

The restaurant is just exceptional. Their lasagna -- their speciality -- is sublime. I can't necessarily describe why, it's just so good. We split the arugula salad and it's hard to imagine a simple salad being exceptional, but it was too. I think it's the dressing. Finally, we had the lemon cheesecake for dessert and it was so creamy. Just better than the cheesecake I've had in nearly every other restaurant. Highly recommend this East Sacramento neighborhood favorite.

Mattone was exceptional in every way. The service, wine, and multi courses all were homeruns. Cannot stress how darn good everything was. I had the lasagne and my fiancé had the grilled chicken, both a treat to our senses. 100% would recommend to anyone looking for a special night out with culinary excellence at the forefront.

The service was great. The lasagna was great. The spaghetti carbonara was disappointing though. Value was good. We will go back, but next time will get the gnocchi instead of the spaghetti carbonara.

Biba would be happy. The food is wonderful but the menu is limited. The calamari is the best in town and probably in the country, the sauce on my petrale sole was amazing, the ravioli were heavenly, the salad was crisp and fresh and properly dressed, the red sauce on the pasta was somewhat bland. The prices here are a tad high especially for lunch. We were particularly annoyed that there is a $3 charge for a bread/breadstick basket; it seems inappropriate given the prices and somewhat disrespectful to the guests. It stuck out as a kind of gouging. The building is the old Espanol and it is hard to disguise that as it has the same acoustic problem so it’s loud. The service is attentive and low key. Mattone will continue to be on my restaurant rotation but I will bring my own breadsticks! Biba had glasses of them everywhere!
