Welcome to Masa & Agave, a speakeasy-style cantina hidden below stairs at the historic Hotel Ivy in Downtown Minneapolis. On Thursday's, Friday's and Saturday's from 8pm to Close we are first-come, first-served and do not accept reservations during this time.

Worshipped as the Aztec gods of fertility and long life, venerated for their powers of sustenance, corn masa and agave have been central to Mexican culture and cuisine since ancient times.

Using authentic techniques, we prepare corn masa-based starters and Mexico City-style tacos that are bursting with regional flavors, along with dinner classics like Pork Carnitas and Negro Monelo-Braised Beef Short Ribs.

Our collection of 200 agave spirits pays homage to the jimadores and mezcaleros who have labored over their craft for generations. Sip on a copita or two, or gather friends for one of our signature Margaritas - try the Tradicionale, Tamarindo or a Margarita al Gusto mixed with your choice of spirit. Salud!

I’d been excited to try Masa & Agave for some time and thought Cinco de Mayo would be the perfect time. But unfortunately they had a very limited Cinco de Mayo menu - 2 egg dishes, ‘bottomless guac’, a couple tacos. We were there at 5:30 pm. Why would we want eggs? We got some margs (which were very good) and shared the birria and tinga tacos (which were also good), then left. We wanted dinner so went somewhere else. Also was a bit disappointed in the noise level. DJ playing very loud music provided a party atmosphere appropriate for the holiday, but it was impossible to carry on a conversation. I do plan to try Masa & Agave again because I’m really interested in their other menu items and cocktails. Just was a very disappointing first visit.

I loved the guacamole, but my meal carnitas dinner was over cooked, dry and hard, other than that I enjoyed the restaurant.

We celebrated my husband’s 65th birthday at Masa & Agave. We had never been there but heard the food was amazing. And it was!!! We loved everything. We had a party of nine and I think we ordered everything on the menu. It’s not a huge selection which I like. Our only complaint was that the two side dishes we ordered came 20 minutes after our entrees and tacos. It would have been nice to eat it all together. The drinks were fantastic. The staff was really nice but we had to ask for them to remove the empty plates and platters when they brought more food. Our table was full of empty/dirty dishes so we ended up stacking and clearing spots so we could fit the next round of food and drinks. Wish staff was a little more attentive to that.

High price and small portions for mediocre food. The highlight of the meal was the chips and guac, which came with about 14 chips. The carnitas were dry and bland and came with about two teaspoons worth of pickled onions. The drinks were ok. Cool atmosphere, but it was hard to find. There are no signs in the hotel to direct you to the restaurant.

Big suprise. Food was delicious. Drinks were good. Great grotto feel. Service is a little slow but server was very friendly and did a great job.

The restaurant gives a very speakeasy vibe. The food is phenomenal. We were greeted right as we walked in and were welcomed. Our server was very pleasant and made great recommendations. I had ordered a second drink, identical to what I first ordered. It came out it was clearly different than the first one I had. I brought it to her attention, she brought it back to the bar and it was remade. I will note I could see them trying it at the bar with a straw, I don’t recommend doing that in eye shot of your customer. It gave me the impression of being questioned. The prices I felt were reasonable. The food was high quality. I would say the place is dark and can be difficult to see. It is a very romantic, underground vibe. The overall experience was great and would highly recommend checking it out.

It wasn’t our first visit but it’s the first time we were disappointed. We ordered the fresh made guacamole and birria tacos. The guacamole had some many onions in it they just overpowered everything else. The birria tacos were barely warm. We love the atmosphere but probably won’t go back.

Really great agave-based cocktail selection. On the spendy side, but on par with downtown cocktail scene. Really nice atmosphere and friendly server. Only did chips/salsa and nachos--service was slow unfortunately. They did apologize, but I'm glad that we were not planning on ordering more. I think they were not expecting to be as busy, perhaps not aware how popular the show playing at Orchestra Hall that evening was. On a related note--website notes the skyway connection to the parking ramp at 11th and Marquette, however IT WAS LOCKED from the outside, which on a snowy day in Minnesota really kind of defeats the purpose of the skyways! Fortunate to get let in, but if they intend to keep it locked they should coordinate with hotel desk to have a buzzer system or something.

The drinks were very good. Food was okay, recommend the nachos but the birria tacos could use some love. A fun and lively nightlife experience worth trying in Minneapolis

We had a fabulous time (and meal) at Masa! We're always hyped when a new spot opens in downtown Minny, and Masa did not disappoint! The space has been rebranded very well - dark and moody, yet also tasteful. Food was also great - especially loved the nachos (amazing presentation), and the guac was also fantastic. I was not drinking, but the bartender made me a virgin marg, and it was the right combination of sweet but sour. Finally - I'd love to give a shout out to our server - Leaunna. She was attentive and all around amazing, especially given the size of our group. Will definitely come back again, and so glad another hip spot has opened downtown!

Guacamole was fantastic, but chips were stale and some soggy. Elotes were flavorful but too salty. I had the birrias tacos, which were okay. Again, too salty and the consume just added more saltiness. The drinks were meh and overpriced. Not what I was expecting. Overall, disappointing experience. On a positive note, the service was good and atmosphere was cool.

Very dark, hard to read the menu. Service ok. Missed part of our meal order. Took awhile to get the order. Chips were like plastic! Not sure what they are doing. Weirdly have them in a napkin. Drinks skimpy, lots of ice. Food was good. Less than $100 for two, so pretty reasonable.

Welcoming and cozy space. Basically a bar on the lower level of the Hotel Ivy, hidden behind a curtain. Publicized as a “speakeasy-style cantina”, it didn’t seem to achieve either theme. Wait staff were friendly. Our server, Talia, was wonderfully attentive. Menu was limited. Nachos were thoughtfully plated; looked and tasted great. I had enchiladas for the main course. One of my dining companions had tacos. We both agreed the tortillas in those two dishes were tough, although the fillings were flavorful. I ate the chicken enchilada filling and left most of the tortillas. I also thought some prices were too steep for the portion/quality. $18 for two small enchiladas with inedible shells, and all sides extra, was too much for me. Everyone in my group of three agreed there was no reason for us to return to this bar.

Food is really solid. Drinks are delicious - really good margaritas! Service was above average. Main complaint is that it is super dark, like you can't read the menu AT ALL. We ordered an appetizer and the kitchen was backed up, so took a little longer, but they explained and comped it for us. Didn't bother us as we were enjoying our drinks! Will return.

Service was very poor, first I reserved and was not even asked about that when showing up. Then I was only served after others who show up way after me and I was very disappointed as I even had to walk up to them to ask for more water as well.

Tried it out for the first time. Drinks were good. The guacamole was more bland and seemed to lack flavor. The birra tacos and enchiladas were decent. Rice and beans and the corn for sides had some different flavors not expected. Booth seats were fine but the chairs were a bit more uncomfortable. The rugs seemed to be a nice touch but too much of a tripping hazard. The staff were very friendly.

This place was very cute! Good food and drinks. We went on opening night, and as expected, they had a few minor kinks to work out. We will dine here again once they have a good rhythm going.
